Just a quote from today's column talking about Cheltenham:-

'Furthermore, it has become ridiculously difficult to make any money if you're value-oriented punter.'

Perhaps you should just stop making excuses and explain to the editor that you are just not up to the job.

Was he referring to himself?
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby March 17, 2013 10:12 AM GMT
He made 2450 to stakes advised at Cheltenham.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby March 17, 2013 10:29 AM GMT
according to tipsterform
Report johnwayne March 17, 2013 10:35 AM GMT
i agree with his summing up of cheltenham.
Report silvergreaser March 17, 2013 10:37 AM GMT
seemed fairly fond of tipping horses from rogue stables at Cheltenham like Byrnes, Elliot and O'Neill.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby March 17, 2013 10:38 AM GMT
Good article today I thought. Not about the "Value" etc.... but about Cheltenham devouring the entire National Hunt season

When I come up with the same as him Cry
Report BlazingWalker March 17, 2013 12:18 PM GMT
Would like to know exactly what he is referring to. Is it the fact you cant get a bet on with the so called bookmakers or is it the prices are stingy in the first place.
Report xmoneyx March 17, 2013 12:21 PM GMT
would be iconic if even he cant get decent odds
Report fife March 17, 2013 12:24 PM GMT
differentdrum to suggest Segal is not up to the job is just stupid.
Report loper March 17, 2013 12:26 PM GMT
You have to laugh if Pricewise with the pick of the prices, often an underround book and no limit to his bets, or closed accounts, moans about value!

not many spotted beneficial 20/1,had one a grade 1 by 11 length.Whoops

Report mario999 March 17, 2013 2:33 PM GMT

at BSP
Report WFT March 17, 2013 3:06 PM GMT
I can vouch that he made a very small profit as starting price, and he doesn't do this very often, so I'm guessing he also did at bsp.
Report differentdrum March 17, 2013 3:12 PM GMT
He describes his punting week as 'mostly useless'. His words, not mine.
Report WFT March 17, 2013 3:19 PM GMT
I never understand all this hostility towards Tom Segal. People need to know the facts, and stop slagging him off because the bookmakers won't let you play on his selections.

I have records on over 80 regular tipsters, with some going back to 2007, and I use two prices, the one that was available when I became aware of the tip (i.e. not the one published), and the starting price. Tom comes easily clear on the first price, and way down the list on starting price. He is not responsible for the starting price. The bookmakers have made sure you can't win using starting price. They've done the same with Hugh Taylor and Gary O'Brien.

PS I don't back his tips very often.

I had a good day yesterday -  made a profit of nearly £10 million pounds to £12 million pound stakes...
Report 1st time poster March 17, 2013 3:32 PM GMT
so on a big race on a saturday why would the punters pal segal put up the fav ,knowing the bookies would strangle the price ,meaning even if it won millions of saturday punters who backed it would actualy lose
Report WFT March 17, 2013 3:38 PM GMT
I'm having difficulty in understanding how you can lose when it wins, no matter what the price ?

Enlighten me.
Report 1st time poster March 17, 2013 3:40 PM GMT
backing a 3 to 1 shot that should be 5 or 6,s means you lose in the long run, allegedly, it was a an early dec race so segal no,s more that anyone that any value in the horse had already been squeezed out of it or does he think he spotted something every punter and bookmaker hadnt spotted in the previous 48 hours
Report WFT March 17, 2013 3:54 PM GMT
Ok, I think I see your logic, and agree, but judging a man on one tip is a bit extreme, especially as it's probably the only favourite he has put forward in a very long time.

His method is about looking for value, and there's plenty of value in backing a favourite that you still think is the wrong price.
Report 1st time poster March 17, 2013 3:56 PM GMT
not 48 hours after every other tipping line has had their mucky paws over it
Report Tucho March 17, 2013 4:37 PM GMT
Don't understand what he's complaing about. He tipped Flaxen Flare at 25/1 and it returned an SP of 25/1. It returned BSP of 40 I think.

There is no other meeting around where he can tip a big priced horse and it won't be backed in much shorter than it's advised price. There is so much money floating around for Cheltenham that even Seagull's tips retain their value.
