JT McNamara stable following surgery

JT McNAMARA is reported to be in a stable condition following surgery on Friday, and remains in an induced coma at Frenchay hospital in Bristol.

Leading amateur rider McNamara fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae following a heavy fall at Cheltenham on Thursday. He was riding Galaxy Rock for Jonjo O'Neill in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase when the nine-year-old fell at the first.

The rider was taken by air ambulance to Frenchay Hospital in an induced coma.

A statement released by Irish Turf Club senior medical officer Adrian McGoldrick and the Injured Jockeys Fund on Saturday morning read: "We can report that following lengthy surgery yesterday JT McNamara is in a stable condition.

"He remains in an induced coma at Frenchay hospital, Bristol.  No further updates will be released until Tuesday 19th March and the family politely request that the media do not contact Frenchay hospital direct.  They would also like to thank everyone for their kind support and best wishes for JT."

Was a great Festival but marred by what happened to JT. This is a guy who could have made it in the professional ranks yet chose to stay an Amateur.

I think the likes of AP, Barry, Ruby and especially JP's reaction said it all.

Hope to god he will survive this, he is a fantastic advertisement for the game we all love!

Plans will be made to transfer jockey JT McNamara to a hospital nearer his family in Ireland.

The 37-year-old amateur suffered a serious neck injury after a fall in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival and had to be airlifted to Bristol.

A statement issued on behalf of his family by Dr Adrian McGoldrick, Irish Turf Club senior medical officer, and Injured Jockeys Fund chief executive Lisa Hancock said: “JT McNamara remains in a stable condition at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. He is now fully alert but requires full time ventilation at present.

“In due course JT will be transferred to the National Spinal Unit at The Mater Hospital, Dublin where he will be closer to his family.

“His wife Caroline and family very much appreciate everyone’s continued good wishes and prayers on JT’s behalf.”

'Good news' isn't really the appropriate phrase, but heartening to hear he's making some progress it seems.

I think thats enough trite comments about a 'speedy recovery'. Pretty obvious that very sadly thats not gonna be happening.

McNamara family issues further injury update

JOCKEY JT McNamara was said to be in a positive frame of mind in hospital in Bristol on Friday as his family reported that he had suffered paralysis as the result of a fall at the Cheltenham Festival.
The well-known amateur rider has been in Frenchay Hospital since March 14, when he was airlifted from the racecourse following from a first-fence fall from Galaxy Rock in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Chase.
His family has kept the racing world up to date with statements issued jointly by Dr Adrian McGoldrick, senior medical officer of the Turf Club, and Injured Jockeys Fund chief executive Lisa Hancock, who on Friday evening disclosed further details of McNamara's injuries.
The statement read: "JT McNamara remains in the Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. Whilst he suffered a serious neck injury resulting in paralysis, he has made progress in the last week and is in a very positive frame of mind.
"He is greatly appreciative of the many messages, cards and letters received and also wishes to thank the Frenchay Hospital who are looking after him so well."

Very sad news indeed.

Been expecting the worst but this news was still devastating.
