Interesting story alright.
Report Brother Mouzone March 1, 2013 9:12 PM GMT
Its when a substance like cedar oil or whatever they use now is put on a horses skin to irritate it so increase blood flow to the area, some people believe it speeds up recovery from tendon or similar injuries, it's used quite a lot in America, I don't know how common it is over here.
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 9:15 PM GMT
Sorry TTO,

I was preparing an answer to your question when it dawned on me rather that give you my understanding of what is involved just google it and you will probably get a better understanding of it. Its the usual situation when one considers that in many quarters blistering is considered barbaric by some and a useful treatment by others. I have no opinion either way but my tale was more on the devious/unscrupulous parties used by some people. In this occasion I feel so sorry for Garleton who did not deserve to be treated in this manner
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 9:19 PM GMT
BM,

Its used extensively over here but more I would suggest by the older generation of trainers,I suspect the younger ones will look to alternative methods
Report swiftynifty March 1, 2013 9:20 PM GMT
a choice for the horse, Cedar Oil or Harvey Smith, you decide.
Report Brother Mouzone March 1, 2013 9:28 PM GMT
thanks midas, I didn't know anything about it's use over here
Report general custer March 1, 2013 9:32 PM GMT
so midas are you telling us that the horse was blistered to make it look like he had a leg?
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 9:33 PM GMT
Obviously my main point being is that the fact is the horse runs tomorrow after roughly 4 weeks following the sales means that the horse had f...all wrong with its leg and should not have been blistered in the first place, Purely a ruse to put off potential buyers and the misinformation given out by the trainer/wife. Shameful
Report general custer March 1, 2013 9:45 PM GMT
in my book the trainer should be reported for fraud
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 10:02 PM GMT
And probably the new/existing owners who I assume were well aware of what was going on!!
Report general custer March 1, 2013 10:30 PM GMT
if he blistered the horse for his own gain this should be reported as fraud
Report judorick March 1, 2013 10:41 PM GMT
can Harry Topper really give 10lbs to Ballabriggs?
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 10:43 PM GMT
GC,

I suspect it may not be an easy task doing that, but hopefully they may have a conscience, and also word may get out what these people get up to for the sake of a few quid,as my auld heiland granny used to say "hell mend them" and with that good night to you all!!
Report midas7 March 1, 2013 10:46 PM GMT
Judorick,

I never miss this meeting and the last couple of years its been obvious Ballabriggs was needing the run for you now what, I would suggest yes Harry Topper will concede the weight!!
Report judorick March 1, 2013 10:51 PM GMT
will be quite a feat
Report judorick March 1, 2013 11:03 PM GMT
the last time Ballabriggs ran in the Kelso race he was carrying the 6lb penalty and was making his seasonal debut after a long lay off

this time he is getting weight and has had a run to blow the cobwebs away
Report mmmalushka March 1, 2013 11:28 PM GMT
judorick, not many horses, even Grand National winners ever recover from the lethering that horse took that day.
Report judorick March 1, 2013 11:35 PM GMT
9/1 getting 10lb from a novice? looks a big price

This is how he ran last year with no prep run and carrying a penalty

"Tracked leaders, headway to lead briefly 10th, blundered next, smooth headway to lead after last, headed and outpaced final 200yds, better for race"

had two runs this time and no penalties

just saying it's a big price
Report Duvauchelle March 1, 2013 11:47 PM GMT
A 12yo against an 140 rated Novice ....shirley not, the downward spiral for one, up up and away for the other.....and then there's Bold Sir BrianMischiefmmm
Report judorick March 1, 2013 11:53 PM GMT
they've got to give him 10lbs and he's 8 or 9 to one, can easily see him leading over the last and trading much shorter

as for Bold Sir Brian, norfolk and chance

Ballabriggs not y
Report judorick March 2, 2013 9:41 AM GMT
Completion at Kelso is also the goal for Bold Sir Brian after his last outing on the racecourse resulting in a crunching fall at Cheltenham, where he lay winded on the ground for several minutes.

Peter Scudamore, partner of trainer Lucinda Russell, said: "He had an horrific fall but our vets and physios have looked at him and say he is fine. He has schooled a lot and what happened doesn't seem to have worried him, but that's at home, so if he jumps round and runs a good race we'll be very satisfied."

as I said, norfolk and chance
Report Duvauchelle March 2, 2013 10:00 AM GMT
just as well I have not backed it then, just my opinion, just as is my opinion that I feel Ballabriggs may be on the wain. I'd be surprised if he ever ran to his rating of 152 again.
Report judorick March 2, 2013 10:18 AM GMT
if I'm right, and Bold Sir Brian has no chance, does that then not make 9 about Ballabriggs an interesting price? Getting 10lb from a novice making his debut at the track with the rest of the field trading at 17+ ? Ballabriggs ran well in this last year with no previous run, had two this year..

yes the fav may be too young and spritely but 10lbs is a lot of weight to give to a classy horse

as I said, it looks a big price and I am sure Balla will trade much shorter in play
Report salmon spray March 2, 2013 10:27 AM GMT
There's something missing from this thread.
Report Duvauchelle March 2, 2013 10:27 AM GMT
yeah I agree it should trade much shorter than 9 given that it has done so in 7 of its last 9 races excluding the GN
Report general custer March 2, 2013 11:02 AM GMT
yes salmon its been taken off

salmon he was blistered to make it look like he had a leg
Report general custer March 2, 2013 11:16 AM GMT
the trainer even told a well known commentator who comes on here who went to see the horse in his box at doncaster he had a leg

Not a bad run from a horse that at Doncaster Sales just over 4 weeks ago the Trainer was telling everyone  had a leg and a bleeder, unsurprisingly the Trainer bought it,hmm!!

Does this horse not want to go right-handed? He always jumps a little right at his fences. I know there wouldn't be many races for him that way round, but it surprises me that he's hardly ever gone that way.
Report midas7 March 2, 2013 6:56 PM GMT
Ged,

Zander would have received the 3lbs,difference between winning and losing, plus he knows how to ride!!
Report RN March 2, 2013 7:56 PM GMT
midas7

The old trooper ran an absolute storming race at Kelso today. I watched it down by the last and the jump he put in at that fence second time round had to be seen to be believed, I held my breath as he stood off so far, and he pulled one out at the last when Badger asked him.

Just a pity the news you had leaves a bit of a sour taste.

From Garleton's point of view though he once again proved that he is all guts! Hope to catch up with you again on the roof at Kelso soon!

This might be the first thread ever to make into a court if the OP cannot prove the allegation. All it will take is a vet to examine the leg.

If you are right midas/tto I am right behind you, this needs to be looked at,however I do hope you have the facts and terminology correct?

Report miprixabloater March 3, 2013 1:54 PM GMT
As regard blistering, it can be used to prevent a horse breaking down or to

reduce the possibility of further damage to a tendon, a horse who has been

blistered which in itself is a painful business would require to be placed

in a cradle for its comfort and survival.  It is inconceivable that a horse

that has been blistered could be ready to run in four weeks, more like twelve

months in my book.
