Yes but not legal in city streets till the Sixites, hence the expression bookies runner as they would hang around street
corners taking bets and if spotted would run like the clappersLaughCool

you are correct b/fLaugh

the point is before exchanges people have always prefered bookmakers to the tote
usually better odds and you could fix the odds of the bet you placed
now people have exchanges which do the same and offer slightly better odds(not always though)
and one can lay back

Because of our love affair with bookmakers and now the exchanges
less money is returned to racing
which is why countries with tote monopolies offer better prize money
but as a punter I prefer our way

Ah but thats not the full picture really as one must of noticed that in the past many business would fall over each over
to sponsor races and most of this has all but gone, now its only bookmakers sponsoring races as well as paying a levy that wasn't payed before so the real missing component is a healthy economy to both offer better prize money via sponsor ship and
provide more racing enthusiasts to be able to afford race horses and the up keep.

The whole issue is really complex and pointing the finger at just one sector like bookmakers, exchanges or the BHA isnt fair if we are all honest and it takes co-operation and support to keep things good for the sport of racing, lets hope this does happen...

Probably the biggest potential problems facing horse racing are Bookmakings trying to avoid paying a levy in favor
of the FOBT trade that was payed for by profits from horse betting over the decades, buisness distancing themselves from racing due to the poor public realtions service it gets from the socail stigma created by bookmakers creating problem gambling and the grand national causing high profile horse casualities.

And its clealry greed that will hurt horse racing the most along with the usual do gooders that would like to see all racing horses and greyhounds on the scrap heap and bury the whole culture of horse racing along with many thousands of horses.

you are indeed right bf..
The parlous state of our economy has hit racing like everything else...

and yes greed is a big problem..,,societys problem..it is the only value people live by nowadays..none other
and yes it is destructive like too much of anything

I still think Horse racing will survive it is the sport of Kings or at least the upper classes
it will never die out..just less courses

Horses have already been replaced historically as mans powerhouse and transport means by machines and
no gaming machine on earth can replace the sheer beauty and thrill of seeing a horse like Frankel
storming to the finish line, and that is a cert!

Long live the culture and sport of racing thorough bred horses.

bf was like a country discovering a new sea full of cod. There were a few good fishing boats who couldn't land the cod fast enough. However the cod began to be fished faster than it could replenish itself when people brought in sophisticated fishing boats that didn't need manning. Other people developed boats that could see  where the cod was going to be a few seconds before it got there. The cod had no escape. The country realised that it was charging the people with sophisticated fishing boats the same as regular ones so decided to charge them a lot more. Now only the best fishing boats fish the sea, where there are far less cod to catch. Eventually there will be no cod left and the boats will leave for another sea.

And some of the cod are charged more now!

A few life bans for jockeys would cut 95% of the corruption , a £5000 bung versus a career as a "Game of Thrones" extra , no brainer.

Before any more blame is put onto the exchanges, take a good look at society today. The exchanges are there,it doesn't mean anyone has to cheat.
Sportsmen have access to all sorts of performance enhancing drugs, but they don't have to use them.
It is an endictment on society, the amount of corruption that goes on,not to mention people's own personal lives, like affairs.
Trust and integrity appears to be a thing of the past, just look at the people voted to run our country, including ALL parties, mess after mess, after mess.
There always have been, and always will be,ways and means to cheat in life, but they don't have to be used ,it isn't necessary.
Exchanges are no way to blame for people's poor scruples,it is the cheaters that are to blame, plain and simple.

Only 1 horse wins each race unless its a dead heat and this has been the nature of racing results
before and after either bookmakers or exchanges came into being!

Bent jockeys & trainers have been round since time started, most bookies benefitted from it,these days with the exchange its just more blatant. If the moves on the exchanges were policed properly then they could be instrumental in cleaning the game up,alongside as bobseiver said draconian penalties to those offending.Use the exchanges dont get rid of them, the old system was no better.

Exchanges future revolves around taxation ie. tax on turnover. Nothing else.

Betfair is the greatest thing since sliced bread.Bent or straight makes no difference to succesful punting. If racing was 100% straight , the mugs would still lose, the shrewdies would still win,and the incompetent pocket talkers would still be on here blaming someone for their losses.

The difference to pre exchanges and now is, the true form man could more  easily understand why a horse was not off. Usually it was because it was getting handicapped. Seeing a horse cruising, but not being given a hard time and not winning, could be used to your advantage. You still got the mugs who'd cry and moan, like in the Top Cees affair, when in reality they could have just done the obvious and backed it at Chester 8/1 and lived happily ever after.
Now there were people (mainly trainers and some owners), who have always been able to lay horses, but not every Tom, Dick and Harry, and especially Jockeys. Of course the exchanges have facilitated the masses, the cheating, imo has become widespread, and horses have been stopped, not for handicapping purposes, but for laying, even when they could possibly win. It has become much more difficult for a true form man to get to grips with what is going on a lot of the time.
Yes it is still possible to make betting pay, and there are still plenty of mugs who would never make it pay, but the whole game is much harder now than 20 years ago.

Its harder now because races have become more competitive and the days of the likes of Provideo running up a massive winning run are long gone.  The World is in a recession and trainers have got to be a bit more cute to survive.  Especially as prize money is so low.  Taking away exchanges won't stop fiddling in races.  Exchanges in fact make it easier to spot the crooks.  The people who  choose to break the rules are at fault, not the exchanges.

"The whole game is much harder.....".Nonsense.How can this possibly be true with all the wonderful facilities offered by Betfair.Twenty years ago you couldnt see a bookmaker offering 10/1 and ask him for 16/1 like you can on here.Twenty years ago you couldn't back a horse and then change your mind and lay out of it etc.etc.etc.etc.
