I work for korals and have had a lad on the phone tonight asking for advice, he offered to work at a shop 20 miles away as a favour to the company, as the weather is so bad the bus company have decided to stop all buses from 8pm this evening (the alternative is he pays for a taxi if he can get one at the cost of £30 which is more than he would get for his shift), he asked what I thought I told him if I was the manager of the shop I would have let him go home or pay for the taxi but it wasn’t up to me so he would have to phone the cluster or area manager who make the decisions, needless to say he's been told he has to stop till the end of his shift so he’s getting a taxi if he can’t get someone to pick him up at his own expense.

Does anyone know if he was legally allowed to go home on the last available public transport, and if by leaving him stranded if he hadn’t got the £30 would they be breaching their duty of care.

never a quarrel but never work for Koral

Id tell him to have a £30 variance then, thought that there would be a company policy in place if no public transport was available.

He's done them a favour by manning a shop that far away in this weather

If he’d know what was going to happen I’m sure he would have, the staff who didn’t sign the new contracts were brought in by the management and given the contract to sign, god knows what would have happened if they hadn’t, but even though we have all now signed the contracts the goals posts are starting to move again, surprise surprise!

The poor lad only started at 5.30 and it wasn’t till after this he found the buses stopped, that’s why the shifts less than £30

The lad needs telling that he is fortunate to have a job on the high street, particular after this week. Several thousnad people have an uncertain financial future due to the collapse of several big high street names, many of whom will have others who are dependant on their income and far more rsponsibilities than this lad probably has. I'm sure he knows someone who'll do him a favour and pick him up or lend him. I'm all for having a dig at the bookies but this lad needs to put up or shut up.

I used to be financial director of a well known retail company with several hundred outlets.I cannot believe that in the circumstances outlined the area manager doesn't authorise the travel cost to be taken from the till.If he's afraid to authorise this the shop manager should give the lad the £30 out of his own pocket and let the operations director know what has happened.A disgraceful episode.

Ronnie, yes I'm Cheltenham so we're talking about the same shops! I live near to the bath road.

The manager & deputies ladies (blonde & brunette) used to limit me (customer X etc) in Coral's. Walked into Powers & she's there & I try having £200 on at 16/1. No problem, "it wasn't me limiting you it was the regime!"

I viewed them in a very different light after that. Powers have got a couple of good one's there Wink

If I'm thinking of the same bloke I met the captain a few times when he came to my area, nice lad very conscientious thought of nothing but the company but like the rest of us the area manager used him to bits, glad he’s got out and hope he’s doing well and hope I will be following his lead soon.

Everyone says get out but it’s easier said than done when you have bills to pay, however didn’t expect the captain to abandon ship, but then again things really are that bad.

government that can mastermind forcing young and old citizens on benefits
to work for employers for there benefits or face surviving on nothing
isn't just get get the numbers down that aren't in work really doesn't give a
