I work for korals and have had a lad on the phone tonight asking for advice, he offered to work at a shop 20 miles away as a favour to the company, as the weather is so bad the bus company have decided to stop all buses from 8pm this evening (the alternative is he pays for a taxi if he can get one at the cost of £30 which is more than he would get for his shift), he asked what I thought I told him if I was the manager of the shop I would have let him go home or pay for the taxi but it wasn’t up to me so he would have to phone the cluster or area manager who make the decisions, needless to say he's been told he has to stop till the end of his shift so he’s getting a taxi if he can’t get someone to pick him up at his own expense.
Does anyone know if he was legally allowed to go home on the last available public transport, and if by leaving him stranded if he hadn’t got the £30 would they be breaching their duty of care.
I am afrraid it's like a game of chess, the Kings and Queens sacrifice the porns for their own personel gain.
Same in most large firms these days, i am a Manager in a similar enviroment yet have a stronger "Team Ethic" imo.

Id tell him to have a £30 variance then, thought that there would be a company policy in place if no public transport was available.
He's done them a favour by manning a shop that far away in this weather

Sowerby If he’d know what was going to happen I’m sure he would have, the staff who didn’t sign the new contracts were brought in by the management and given the contract to sign, god knows what would have happened if they hadn’t, but even though we have all now signed the contracts the goals posts are starting to move again, surprise surprise! Penzance The poor lad only started at 5.30 and it wasn’t till after this he found the buses stopped, that’s why the shifts less than £30 Halcyon I’ve always been a trier and I’m trying mate but age goes against me.

Any area manager refusing to pay this should'nt be in a job ffs, he's asked for a favor, theres no public transport and snow on the ground, its akin to ask someone to work for nothing.

Yes make the till £40 short and have a couple of pints whilst you wait for the taxi....
Some of the Corals staff that I have seen cannot even count to forty let alone pronounce it ...

Phone the area manager (C8nt) and say I've had a violent occurrence and been threatened by FOBT players. Just calling Old Bill
He may get a reaction.
I;d suggest all koral staff who support the lad do the same.

The lad needs telling that he is fortunate to have a job on the high street, particular after this week. Several thousnad people have an uncertain financial future due to the collapse of several big high street names, many of whom will have others who are dependant on their income and far more rsponsibilities than this lad probably has. I'm sure he knows someone who'll do him a favour and pick him up or lend him. I'm all for having a dig at the bookies but this lad needs to put up or shut up.

I know Nicholas Joes son is still about but what happened to your old pal Bernie his other son is he still around.

The lad was doing a 4 hour shift at about £7.50 an hour so £30 before tax and the taxi was £30 so he’s paying for the privilege of doing korals a favour!

I used to be financial director of a well known retail company with several hundred outlets.I cannot believe that in the circumstances outlined the area manager doesn't authorise the travel cost to be taken from the till.If he's afraid to authorise this the shop manager should give the lad the £30 out of his own pocket and let the operations director know what has happened.A disgraceful episode.

As Posy said any decent retail establishment with any morals at all would have told the guy to take the money out the till and put it through as sundry expenses, probably another joker who thought the £30 was coming out of his own pocket

Ronnie, yes I'm Cheltenham so we're talking about the same shops! I live near to the bath road.
The manager & deputies ladies (blonde & brunette) used to limit me (customer X etc) in Coral's. Walked into Powers & she's there & I try having £200 on at 16/1. No problem, "it wasn't me limiting you it was the regime!"
I viewed them in a very different light after that. Powers have got a couple of good one's there

If your in there tomorrow tell her the good looking geordie who works for korals and who blagged an umbrella off her in December for the other half, will see her next week.

I'm reliably informed that Powers are planning on tripling the size of their retail estate over the next 18 months so you never know. They may be in your town sooner than you think.

If I'm thinking of the same bloke I met the captain a few times when he came to my area, nice lad very conscientious thought of nothing but the company but like the rest of us the area manager used him to bits, glad he’s got out and hope he’s doing well and hope I will be following his lead soon.
Everyone says get out but it’s easier said than done when you have bills to pay, however didn’t expect the captain to abandon ship, but then again things really are that bad.

when i worked for koral in the 80s one saturday the settler didnt turn up. area manager told me id have to manage on my own,i settled over 1400 bets that day coral won about 2200 on the day that was mega money then. when i rang the figures in at the end of the day around 7 pm area manager wasnt interested in what id done, all he wanted me to do was check all bets for a overcharge, one of the girls on the till was a pound short. i left about 6 months later never looked back.

Corals were the only betting shop chain to give a racing diary this year - full marks to them for that
seems quite an easy job these days with settling machines, long hours I know but if the staff are paid by the hour presumably they want that

Start walking the 20 miles home, collapse half way, get rushed to hospital, make a statement as to why he did such an idiotic thing. Both the ranc.1d area manager and firm would get some deserved media abuse, sorted.

I worked for corals as a relief manager between 1972 to 1974.In the meseyside and sometimes greater manchester districts. Even back then there would be a stewards inquiry when i tried to claim travel expenses.

He should wait until the end of his shift. Ring up HO and tell them the he can't shut up shop as the locks are frozen, followed by "got to go, got a long walk home".

should have took a leaf out of the book of the manager who used to run the corals in parkway camden town in the early 90s he used to have his own fruit machine hidden in the ladies khazis which he used to wheel out and replace there one and is also meant to have an omron till under the counter which he used to switch on when racing started and stand bets himself. that kid would have showed the lad how to turn the situation round
