Thought Johnson was out ridden by Walsh in the last race and now can't steer home a sure fire winner. Not often i slate a jockey but i've disliked him since he gave Planet of Sound a howler in the Grand National

I expect he was worried that if he tried to "pop it" he'd be slagged off for not riding him into the last by all you armchair experts.
Poor lad can't win.

zaynar, just watched it 4 times and the reins did lengthen when he encouraged to jump the last, not sure whether it was because the horse put down but something was not quite right.

Surely though FB, there is a time and place to pop and a time and place to ask for big one. Even us "Armchair experts" are allowed an opinion

hugo b0ss 05 Jan 13 13:56 At no time, was johnson in control of his mount in the 100 yards before the final hurdle. If he was mine, i'd wouldn't let him near my horse.
Oh - he might as well pack up riding then !!

Plenty of good jockeys, plenty of poor ones as is life. I'm not criticising Dickies ability as a jockey. I am stating I thought he made a mistake in asking for a big jump when one imho was not needed.

Lot of great jockeys on here - please tell us how many winners you've had - yes entitled to opinion - but telling a guy who is only the 2nd to ride over 2000 winners what he should have done there is mind boggling !

It always amazes me how people think that just because he has ridden 2000 winners it somehow entitles him to legendary status. He is at best a reasonable rider, nothing more. Like all other English national hunt jockeys he is most certainly fairly limited. His attachment to Hobbs is the job that fits his abilty perfectly. An ordinary enough rider at an ordinary enough stable,if he was riding in Ireland he wouldnt get two rides a week. Bar McCoy there isnt another good jockey riding day in day out in Britain,so its no great feat to rack up a big number of winners. The competition he faces is non existent most days, its a different story when the big Irish names come rolling into town.

The number of time he decks horses in hurdle races is unbelievable.
He also seems not be aware of how a race is unfolding, he had one rival in that race, he was going better, why he did not get that horse balanced and just make sure that he got over the last is beyond me.
His normal power packed finish would then have been more than enough. You cant argue with his number of winners. He reminds me of one of those yank jockeys who ride hundreds of winners each year at one of those gaff greyhound tracks.
There are so many jockeys with more ability that him, irrespective of the number of winners that he had over the years.
I didnt back the horse.

To be fair Flying Bolt i could take him or leave him, no reason to dislike the guy but watching him on Planet of Sound i couldn't believe the ride i was giving him. He's probably ridden well in a 1000 or so races and i've possibly not seen hundreds of them but i haven't trusted him since and he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory today.
"thelastflingDid you like him prior to that ?Like for the previous 18 years of his career ?"To be fair Flying Bolt i could take him or leave him, no reason to dislike the guy but watching him on Planet of Sound i couldn't believe the ride i was givin
johnson's rode enough horses to know when to go for it or sit tight , he knows the last at chepstow is on the rise and the horse was hanging and running about from just before the second last, yet he choose to go for it crazy

Thank you very much for those sentiments flyingbolt and i am glad you qualified them with "in my opinion". Sadly for you, that opinion is not deemed as valuable to others as it is to your good self. In fact i would say that your opinion is definitely no more important than many that post regularly, although i am fully aware that you wouldnt concur with those sentiments. It is clear from alot of your posts that you place your self on some sort of cyber pedestal when discussing horse racing matters,im not so sure that others that post have such an exalted opinion of you,as you clearly have about yourself.

About 10% of the forum start about 95% of the pocket talking/jockey bashing threads that are started for no other reason than the originators cannot accept losing their money, they're like kids spitting their dummies out.
Although it's obvious people like Flyingbolt and other sensible people are banging their heads against a brick wall it's difficult at times not to comment when the b0llock talking meter is going off the scale all the time.

I have to say that I have never ventured an opinion on a jockey on any forum based on losing money. I merely comment on what I see with my own eyes having watched racing for fifty odd years.

I'll expect to see loads of your "opinions" praising good rides as well as slagging off bad ones in the coming months then. Or will we just see the usual (not from yourself) 20 threads a day moaning about bad un's and 2 a day about good un's?
