With concert goers yes.  Kaiser Chiefs will sell thousands of tickets.  Not necessarily punters.  The Fri night has been shockingly bad business in tatts the last 2 years though.

Newbury racecourse were running at a loss before concerts were introduced. It's still a scandalous price to be charging bookmakers though. Agreed, you should boycott one meeting to highlight your plight. It must be a very small percentage of the extra turnout that are interested in having a bet anyway.

It would be better if half the courses shut down and the others doubled their meetings. Sacrilege to some, but maybe best in the long run.
Report flash bookie December 11, 2012 7:55 AM GMT
adge 22.12 , i believe it to be 8x£38 +£38 per staff member entrance . +£20 agt +£11 exante + fuel + wages = a blessed fortune !!in my case approx £550 exes before a bet is struck hence even off a decent pick i will only be attending royal ascot and goodwood fridays ! in all honesty the whole situation is truly laughable !!!
Report ribero1 December 11, 2012 8:01 AM GMT
You can get the kaiser chiefs at york for £18.50 if you book in advance, also 3 day ticket in tatts for the dante meeting is £40.

Report lumponlarge December 11, 2012 8:37 AM GMT
Ed - can't buy metal badges ? You all share the same one don't you ... nudge nudge wink wink !!
Report adge December 11, 2012 8:54 AM GMT
as flash and ian say you must think long and hard about the viability in attending.
the attendance only go for the concert. horse racing punters at £38 is a big fat ZERO
race one you take arround £100 , race two and three £200 to £250 , race four and five £400 to £500 and race six is decent business.
and that is only in good pitches. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT MAKE IT PAY.
the only book who should consider attending is democrat as his expenses are less than everyone else owing to him living on the doorstep
Report ribero1 December 11, 2012 9:03 AM GMT
Yes flash but in most cases doesn't the bookie go in on the badge, never had a problem getting 3 day badges for the staff at york although having been a member there for 40 years (obviously started as a junior!) i keep hearing rumours they may take them off bookies which actually would make me better off as i never go in the members now i'm on the other side of the fence.
Report ribero1 December 11, 2012 9:08 AM GMT
Just to add on the discrimination subject i think apg approached the OFT about it and they didn't want to know, the bottom line is some courses are considerably more bookmaker friendly than others, edward gilespie being the best i have come across.

Report ribero1 December 11, 2012 9:35 AM GMT
probably not enough in it for them APG,i'm fairly ambivalent about membership at tracks because let's face it plenty abused it in the past and no doubt would continue to do so if they got the chance, maybe now we are supposed to be building bridges with tracks they could do a seperate bookies membership which would suit both parties?

You come here looking for some interesting threads, you get a thread full whinging
intellectual bookies, moaning about admission prices. Don't go it's simple. The market
dictates the fee's. If it's not viable, it's not viable. It'll give you an idea, what's
it's like to be a punter, when you get back for £50, or when you see 1/6 of odds a place 1,2,3.
Report ribero1 December 11, 2012 10:32 AM GMT
interesting re cheltenham flash, are they going to have a bookies entrance?otherwise i can't see how they can stop anyone buying tickets in advance?
Report adge December 11, 2012 10:33 AM GMT
the entrance charge dictates the fees , that's where the proble lies.
the racecourse have added £20 [ or more ] to the entrance cost per person but the bookmaker [ with one staff ] has to pay 9 times that entrance fee to bet.
or in other words £180 [ or more ] for the privilege of seeing the keiser chiefs.
and most leave before they come on stage....surely , we are allowed a moan
Report adge December 11, 2012 10:36 AM GMT
ribero1 ,
i believe that to be the case after this season.
i have already ordered my " discounted " tickets...in fact , i've already got them [ self printed ]

Re the negotiations, those doing the negotiating should have been seen to be much more forceful in putting bookmakers as a whole on the front foot rather than bowing to their commands and protecting their own interests/significant investments,

the fact is that Racecourses are a business and if they can get 20,000 concert goers to pay £38 a throw to turn up then of course they are going to, boookmakers are of no concern to the racecourses at all...... however if it is voiced to the Racecourses by the appropriate parties that on concert night's special concessions need to be granted to bookmakers then they may listen......... the situation you have at the moment again only assists those in the very top picks yet again.... who will benefit as the lower picks won't turn up due to the expenses.

This really is an issue to unite over and then move on to other issues that need sorting out........
Report flash bookie December 11, 2012 11:07 AM GMT
adge 10.36 your post is 100% correct chetenham are to keep the badge box in the same place until post 2012/13 season. then as with all jc racecourses the badge boxes will be on the outside i.e cheltenham is to allow the concession of prepaid/discounted tickets for this season only unlike other venues. solely thanx to edward gillespie.

Parents can turn up with sprogs and see a concert and a days racing for peanuts, propping up a racecourse?

Nobody I know objects to courses raising additional revenue but at the expense of what they are supposed to be in business for? Bollox.

Either give Bookies FREE entry and a set price for staff or stop calling yourselves racecources.

Boycott the fukcers and see what happens adge.

just been doing a price check for their gig in cambridge on their tour next year and the cheapest tickets i can find are £44.99p so seems value as a pop concert but horseracing , punters and bookmakers are just the sideshow to the event.
maybe we should all stay away
Report wasnot December 12, 2012 11:02 AM GMT
£44.99 is for a full concert adge.  What they put on after racing is just a bit of a cameo performance and doesn't include the lights/special effects etc.

What winds me up about Newmarket is that the garden enclosure has a laughable 2,350 capacity due to health and safety.
In reality this leaves the silver ring half full at best - and of course the last few thousand end up having to pay extra
and go into tatts as the silver ring has sold out. A nice little earner.

What a great idea to keep the attendance down though - let's nail the kids for £12 to £17 each.
