By:
sorry to dissapoint you lads but you would be amazed how many racecourse bookmakers now go with the favs.
By:
when i read op of screens up round newbury bookies
i thought one had been done in!!! |
By:
surely jimnast your not saying that they've all arbed it back on here
has this ever happened before |
By:
not all mr crisp .

thanks hulk , i actually lost 6 -1 , the only winning race being big bucks. got up at 6.30 a.m. drove 360 miles and just got home ,lost just over 3k [ can't be bothered to count it]...badge was £307 including the marketing fee and even with all those winning punters the business was well down on previous years.
there were SIX vacant pitches today , i just wonder how many there will be next year |
By:
I lost 5-2. Never seem to get that meeting right.
By:
Surely ye won on the first two races, second looked a bonanza 11/10 and a 2/1shot beaten in the one race although the last couple of favourites going in generally makes it a good day for punters.
By:
who rode the winner , wildman , course punters follow ap over a cliff
By:
I did win on the first two but not much. Also, didn't lose much on Big Bucks. Given up taking that one on.
By:
Things have changed since I used to race regularly in England, then the mugs bet in the offices and the shrewdies bet on course.
By:
Putting the results to one side - no problem - win some lose some.
£307 to bet today was Criminal. Crowd was way down, and £30 for no atmosphere was not good value for anyone. Marketing fee has a lot to answer for on days like this - it should be scrapped. |

i was at newbury thursday and friday the place was dead, this fixture should be able to compete with the paddy power fixture, same catchment area the standard of racing is at least the equal yet nobody turns up,the facilties at newbury are better than those at cheltenham the whole thing is a puzzle to me,but if it carrys on this way i can see it going to a two day fixture or even one day.

There is a complete lack of promotion of the sport both nationally and locally.
It seems all racecourses are managed by people who think the public will just turn up. There are many ways to promote the sport to the general public but no-one in racing seems to want to bother. |
By:
Spot on Rog, it's all about building up your product/brand and getting people to come through the gate.....
By:
Ascot Cheltenham very good (any tracks bookies complain about in the main very poor at it)
By:
even the newbury regulars are getting fed up with the place, you are now no longer allowed by the 3rd last which many of us enjoyed doing,on friday during racing it was announced over the tannoy there would be a hennersy preview in the white bar from 4pm a group of lads from our hotel thought that would be a good idea have a couple of drinks and listen to the discussions, they were surprised to say the least that the white bar had called last orders at 345.

The reason people don't attend these mid-week fixtures :
1. The cost of entry to the course is exorbitant for the fayre that's on offer. 2. You've been ripped off once, you then get ripped off with the cost of food and drink. 3. You can consistently bet on here with better odds than are on offer on course. I'm afraid unless the racecourses address the cost issues midweek horseracing and the bookmaking occupation will be in terminal decline. |
By:
£30 to get in must tell a story. We are in the biggest recession in living memory and racecourses think they are offering a product that is as interesting to the masses as football and rugby on a Saturday afternoon. They haven't got a clue.

in fairness to newbury £20 one enclosure thursday/friday for the standard of racing isnt ott i do of course take your point about the cost of things once your in,regarding the exchanges been better value, you could bet 1st 4 1/4 in tatts and on the rails and the books were right up with the prices plus of course no commision and fresh air. |
By:
I switched from attending football to going racing about 5 years ago as i thought football was poor value for money. Funny how things have changed around so quickly.
Just paid £105 for 3 days at Newbury |
By:
Lots of things wrong with racing but to say there was a poor crowd at Newbury on thurs and fri and that Betfair prices are bigger than the ring obviously wasn't there and at worse is being intentionally dishonest.
By:
roy
do you think there was a good crowd on thursday and friday ? |
By:
I thought thursday and friday were very busy, saturday wasnt.

ibrahima sonko
where did you think it was busy ? |
By:
Newbury need to sort out the getting off the car park sooner rather than later too. They sent everyone out the back exit yesterday (through the golf course) then on the roundabout this lane joins there was temporary traffic lights. After that, there was a big queue up to the lights with no traffic in any other direction. Surely it wouldn't have taken the wisdom of Soloman to realise this would cause huge queues. A couple of cops on the temporary lights and a couple on the main lights would have seen the traffic gone in no time but its like they don't care by then, they've had your money now fk off.

By:
roy,
Where did I say there was a poor crowd there Thursday and Friday ? Jimnast stated in an earlier post that the place was dead Thursday and Friday, please read posts before you accuse people of being dishonest. |

looking at the plans for newbury the first job to be completed is the road system that will be in by next years winter festival. |
By:
The number of people in on thursday & friday, hard to put a number on it but it was busy for a thurs/friday. Would be nice if we could see the figures somewhere.
2011 thursrday was free for people with a rg14 postcode, not this year. |

My family are regular racegoers;we usually drag a few others along who only attend once or twice a year. On discovering £30 entry we decided to give the meeting a miss...first Hennessy missed in about ten years. That's at least 6 missing, lost entry fees of £180 plus usual add-ons. This scenario only needs to be played out by a few hundred others,to understand where the missing crowd has gone. When will racecourses ever wake up to understand that more means less?? I am sure that with an entry price for Tatts in the £!0-£15 mark then attendances would increase. Witness the crowd that turned up for last year's "free day"! And the course even managed to miss a trick then with there only being a couple of bars open.Newbury needs a kick in the pants, it has recently developed a jobsworh manner that makes Ascot look almost welcoming.

Were the screens needed for the 4 books behind the grandstand?
By:
Holywell I was just making my point from someone who was there and has seen some awful midweek attendances over the past 2/3 years that the actual crowd was very fair. I apologise for any offence. Jimnast I deliberately didn't talk about the business thurs/fri as I understand it wasn't that great for the ring boys but for actual crowd and atmosphere I thought it was fair and encouraging.

i wasnt working either of the two days and on thursday in particular i couldnt believe how quiet it was around the bar areas and the parade rings, friday was buisier but nothing like paddy power friday which is something newbury need to look at,regarding the point about theres more value on the exchanges well of course thats nonsense,as i have already stated any punter could bet 1st 4 1/4 to money at the right prices in both tatts and on the rails. |
By:
i was there on friday and saturday on friday in the ring the buisness was pathetic the books on the 2nd line were taking a few quid but the guys on the third could not strike a bet as for saturday it did look as if biz was down .......as regards getting out the place .....SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE WANTS FKKIN
By:
Did i read earlier it was all one ring thursday & friday? if so no wonder tatts was no good as what usually happens in these circumstances is that most of the crowd will use the superior facilities in the members area and bet on the rails and it seems that at least one rails operator thought business was ok,no surprise there then.
By:
one ring ribero on thurs/fri,rails looked fine tatts looked poor.
