The skill level on course bookmakers operate from is pretty low imo. At the bigger meetings BF layers more often than not are
trying to make money with only 1 to 2% in their favour, whilst the on course bookies appear to only be able to operate on %'s
a lot higher than that. Sure they need to cover expenses but the BF prices expose the poor value they offer.
If I was that way inclined I would have no problem running a book along side the on course bookies at the bigger meeting's
due to the competition being so weak (unlike BF). At the poorer meetings were the game is often far from straight I wouldn't
take on the on course bookies as they'd probably be operating from a higher skill level in a far from straight forward situation.

why is it ripping off the punters to decide not to bet overbroke someone on an earlier thread today tipped the mumper each way . it was 16/1 to win on here but the place was odds on , does anybody realisticly think that they would expect to get on at 16/5 a place . instead of moaning at  not being allowed to rip off bookies knockers would be better employed using their brains to spot achievable value and not each way gifts .

if it  was 1/6 the mumper today at even 12/1 on course it was manna from heaven compared to the evens a place on here . surely even thickos can see that .

do many on course bookies take place only bets these days then.

How many races have over broke place terms ? One or two a week maybe.  119% win and 90.8% place book must still pay over the season, with a few each way steals winning now and again. Suspect a very large percentage are won by the long odds on shots.

Jesus, thats the most ill informed post on here for years.

point is if you cant bet place only on course,& you only fancy a horse to get in frame not win, then being able to back 12/1,16/1 whatever at 1/5,1/6 is not value over the exchanges.

i rest my case
By:

When: 22 Nov 12 16:35
so if you fancied the mumper to place today but not particularly to win  you say you are better off backing it place only on here at evens than back it on course each way at 1/6 the odds and i am told it was available to money at 10/1 on course . are you for real or taking the mickey.

i asked if you could back place only on course,if you can then great.in your opinion was the mumper a special case.

2 totally different bets  , but

£1 e/w at 10/1 1/5 the odds , if it only places reutrns £3 for a £2 outlay
£2 place only bet on here at evens returns £4 if it only places

but of course if it wins you will feel gutted ,

just saying

just got back from market rasen. yes i offered place only on this race and the mumper was always priced at 10/1 [ actually bet to an average of 85% on the places.] of course i was 1/5th odds.
so place only with me was 2/1 against that pitiful evens on here
i expect i was saved by the fact that business in general with a poor card was dreadful

where harry2.1 and his arguement breaks down by saying there are only a few of these races each week is that when these races do occur our turnover jumps dramatically on what we take on races with good place percentages

i have never arbed in my life adage , but i know value when i see it.
would i have to be a long term loser to be able to have a few hundred on at 2/1 ?

since taking out my permit in 1972 not one single punter has ever been banned or even restricted from betting whatever they like with me.

hello donit

this bit about been overbroke many other books seem to manage to bet to a 1/5th when others are only 1/6th,ok i realise the 1/5th books are only 100/1 when the 1/6th go 125/1 and are only 25/1 when the 1/6th are 30/1 but many books will just get on with it with around 95 in the place book, knowing soon we will have 125 plus in the 7 runner race.punters do notice whats going on more than some books realise one day there will be none left.

Must agree with you there jimnast about there being none left.
Punters do notice. As you say when all the on-course punters have gone (to the on-course betting office,or the dreaded tote)
where they can get 1/4 odds ew.first 4 in 16 runner handicaps.etc etc.where will the on-course bookmakers go?Wont be any point in them going to the Track cos they will be betting to nobody,or at best a few £2 punters. The man that killed the golden goose looks a genius compared to some course bookies.
