Anyone picking up today’s copy of the Racing Post wont failed to have noticed the big splash made on their front page after Tom Segal bagged a couple of winners yesterday for their Pricewise column.

Tom highlighted both Marcret and Absinthe who won at 13/2 and 10/3 SP, whilst he also picked out Jack Dexter for their subscription based Pricewise Extra service at 9/2 SP. (As a side-note, it’s worth noting that the 11/2 claimed by the RP on Absinthe would have likely been reduced by non-runners and Rule 4 deductions)

Naturally Tom should be pleased with himself for doing so well yesterday, but the bigger question is…just how well do his results stack up over time?

Well I want to tackle that today as since October 2009 we have been tracking every single one of the tips supplied by the Racing Post’s Pricewise Extra service in order to report back to our members.

The Pricewise Extra service allows access to the paid for tips service from the Racing Post that costs followers between £1.90 a day and £4.50 per week if paying annually to follow. Posted up at midday, it features tips from the likes of Tom Segal, Andrew Barr and others such as Eddie Fremantle & Paul Kealy on a daily basis.

Tom Segal Previously Bang Out Of Form

What the Racing Post fail to tell you is just how poor Tom’s tips through the Pricewise Extra service have been for a long time, prior to the winner yesterday.

Taking his figures at advised odds (more about how tricky these are to obtain shortly) since the start of 2011, our records show his stats as follows:

129 bets, 131 pts staked
loss to advised odds of -51 pts and a Return on Investment of -38.93%

This also includes a recent run of 33 bets which failed to yield one first placed finish, with just a placed each way effort at 12/1 stopping the losing rot.

Prior to 2011 though, Tom was red-hot with a profit of 132.2 pts from 175 bets and a 75.11% ROI.

Indeed if combining his record both pre and post 2011, our record shows that he comes out with a 26.45% Return on Investment from 303 bets so overall he is profitable. You just need to be very patient if following him in…and that’s before we discuss how tough it is to get the odds he puts forward.

When you back a winner of a race and you've done the study yourself you get a great deal of pleasure in knowing that the work / time you've put in has paid off, to me thats more important than the financial return. I can't understand why people invest their money on the say so of a tipster, newspaper or other, what pleasure do they get out of that ?.

Forgetting the politics of Pricewise I'm pleased for Tom Segal and his followers that he had a good day yesterday after a poor run during the flat race season. Unfortunately there will have been many of his followers deserted him during the bad run and they would be cursing themselves yesterday. One of the posts above state that he is in profit over a number of years, I would say there would be very few who have backed all his selections during that period.

the laughable part of todays posts headlines are the ones quoting the likes of paddys, hills etc of people having yankees etc on toms tips and adding in jack dexter which pricewise never tipped, cant see in my post where tom advised any combination bets,
also you must factor in alot of those following tom every week will be backing them ew although this is never advised by tom ,thus diluting the winning numbers even more

fair play to Tom: like Hugh Taylor he knows there can be long losing runs but a confident 33-1 selection makes up for that; not his fault that the ipad prices make it hard/impossible to get a tenner on in the morning.  Pissed off though that my bet KINSGATE NATIVE got chinned by another of his tips

Holywell: That's interesting what you say about going through the form yourself, picking out a horse and then seeing it win. There's no question that it's really satisfying. I used to do it but I'm afraid that unless you're a Tom Segal or a Hugh Taylor you'll lose in the long run.
I've been following Pricewise for some time now and have only had one losing year with him,(2008). It's easy to say but you just need patience and a big enough bank,(at least 100 times your normal stake to feel comfortable). And don't just do singles; Goodwood and Ayr with Pricewise have made my year. It may take a little time to get used to backing a tipster instead of your own fancies but in my opinion it's the only way to long term profit. I don't care if Tom's on one bookmakers payroll, there's plenty of them to get on with.
Report holywell September 25, 2012 11:16 AM BST
cheerful,

If it works for you thats fine.

When Pricewise is on a long losing run you obviously still back his selections. Were you tempted to either change your tipster or select your own in 2008 ?
Report cheerful sparrow September 25, 2012 4:23 PM BST
No, I tend to stick with him through thick and thin and also Templegate in the Sun; Phil Logan was good before he moved and Steve Jones got his act together last year finishing up with the National winner at a massive price on the machine. He's near the bottom of the tipsters table but thats good as he'll try all the more harder to produce the winners.
You don't need much on when they strike with a decent price. Another thing; I hardly ever have a decent bet under 3s; then say on a scale of 1 to 10 points, I'll have fewer points on the lower priced tips and more on the higher priced ones, so when a big priced one goes in I don't wish that I'd had more on as that disipline ensures that I already have.
It probably goes against the grain to have a decent bet on a big priced horse but Pricewise finds them; you just have to hang on in there when he's having a losing run which he is bound to have at the odds his tips are. I try not to take it too seriously as the more successful you are the harder it gets placing the bets. Roll on Newmarket!
