How many times does he have to say listen? does he not think people listen to him? from what he said he was trying to make excuses for his son and put the blame on himself for not running pacemakers.

I agree definitely FURIOUS in that interview.  I've watched the race three times now and whilst it true Camelot didn't quicken like in the 2000g and the Derby, O'Brien indicated they expected that.  Encke started his surge to the front ½l up on Camelot. JPOB then had to take Camelot around Encke and found himself 3l down.  Although Camelot didn't quicken he stayed on quite well and reduced the deficit to 1l by the line.  Taking him around Encke like might well have made the difference.  Difficult to know if Encke would have found any more.  One thing for certain Encke got a better ride.
Report duncan idaho September 15, 2012 4:43 PM BST
from where Enke and Camelot were 2½f out, I would have thought the jockey on the Guineas winner was entitled to think he wouldnt get outquickened to that extent....in fact, without the benefit of hindsight, you would have thought more of a concern might be that he wouldnt last home....seems everyone else disagrees
Report EVILROYSLADE September 15, 2012 4:46 PM BST
He will be replaced next season. No way will Magnier and co be that forgiving. They are ruthless and sentiment will not be an issue.

Yes but you dont ride a Guineas/Derby winner in the Leger as a non stayer surely? Certainly not "the best horse I've ever had"

As it turned out Dartford only set a steady pace nothing more - whether that was the intention or the jockey misjudged who knows.

Report tictacman1 September 15, 2012 5:31 PM BST
"He ran a great race but just got beat. It's disappointing for everybody but that's the way it is. That's racing. We expected him to win and if I thought they were going to go that steady I would have had a pacemaker in or two pacemakers. But that's my fault. I was sure they were going to go a pace, but that's the way it was."

O'Brien said: "It wasn't what we thought it was going to be. It was a steadily-run race and Joseph said he was a little bit fresh with him, but that was probably always going to happen in a slowly-run race.

"That's the way it is and well done to the winner,. That's the reality of it really. I'm not sure where he will go next. I thought that, if he was to stay in training next year, there was a chance he wouldn't run anymore but I don't know. It will be the boys' decision."

Joseph O'Brien was too upset to speak to the press afterwards.

No excuses for Camelot imo.  The distance did him.  He might have won if AOB ran five pacemakers to slow it up.  The time was respectable.

Still, it is amazing how the best jockey available to ride all these great horses just happens to be the son of the trainer.
Report Storm Alert September 15, 2012 7:27 PM BST
Both Encke and Camelot were held up until about 3f out.  At that stage Encke was ½l in front of Camelot, Barzalona took Encke to the outside to give him a clear run, meanwhile O'Brien took Camelot to the inside behind the front runner coming back to the field, it was described in commentary as "the brave man's route". That decision then meant O'Brien had to take Camelot around Encke after which he found himself 3l down.  Although Camelot didn't quicken he stayed on quite well and reduced the deficit to 1l by the line.  Taking him around Encke cost 2l and might well have made the difference it's difficult to know if Encke would have found any more.  One thing is for certain Encke got a better ride.

Ah yes, an amazing stroke of good luck. In your opinion maybe, but not to those "in the know" at Ballydoyle.

It began approximately 20 years ago. Someone with a 'good bit of clout at Coolmore', having read a book on Lemarckian theory, decided that, parallel to the successful stallion breeding operation, they would start a jockey breeding program. The results of this work are only becoming obvious to us now.

So, It's not an AMAZING COINCIDENCE at all.

Reminded me of the ride Sea Moon got from Peslier in last year's race. O'Brien probably not the best around but they all have off days and he's definitely not the worst.

If Magnier was as ruthless as people say then his grandson wouldn't get the rides he does. The term reap what you sow has never been truer with this gang. Murtagh treated shamefully by them. Sad for the horse himself but delighted for the connections it got beat.

Maybe Daddy was twice as upset not only that the horse failed to win the so called triple crown but in doing so it denied him a place in history as the only trainer to win all 5 English classics in a season which would have elevated him even higher than God himself, I thinks he's God as it is anyway.

The "listens" were been fired out faster than a machine gun, the public face of the polite almost timid individual was starting to unravel in front of our eyes, sweet as pie when interviewed after they win, maybe he's not all what he seems?.
Report Captain Christy September 16, 2012 9:57 AM BST
I noticed this time he wasn't on the phone to 'connections', maybe he had turned it off Laugh
Report sidthekid September 16, 2012 9:59 AM BST
I think the ground was a bit fast for Camelot, see the way his head came up and he took a long time to get into top gear,He did not pass Encke even after the line, but he stayed well enough to beatt all the others.
Yes he won the English Derby on fast ground, but i cant help to think the Downhill run got him into top gear.
Even Dual Arc Winner Alleged got beat/outstayed in the Leger.
For Camelot the Arc next??.
