Ron Atkins? Excellent jockey imo and could have won round Plumpton blindfolded.

He had a large R A painted on the front of his protective helmet if I remember well, there was another guy Tony Brown who used to ride for one of the Easterbys?

punchestown, presume you are thinking of Alan Brown who rode for Peter Easterby during the late 70's/80's and who now trains his own small string of around 20 flat horses in Malton.

That's him alright,I remember him on a horse called No Bombs among others.

Someone might correct me if I'm wrong but memory is telling me No Bombs use to run in the same colours as Sea Pigeon for owner Pat Muldoon.

The horse No Bombs will always be remembered for being the horse who won a race easily at Ascot only to be disqualified a week later as it had prohibited substances, the source...? A Mars bar, stolen from its lad on the way to the races...!

I thought No Bombs ran in the Snailwell colours (like Alverton).

Cork: I thought the incident with the Mars bar was from an earlier era and involved Hill House or was there a repeat of the incident?

Can confirm that No Bombs was in the same ownership as Alverton. Can't remember the other good horses who also were owned by them.

They had Major Thompson, big white blaze down face, was 2nd in Schweppes to stable companion Within the Law. Also had the speedy juvenile filly with Stoute; Circus Ring. There'll be more too though they never had large numbers.

Re Hill House - No Mars Bars or other artificial aid to pleasure/performance needed. He was able to perform entirely on his own, happily producing and consuming his own stimulants.
Scientifically proven to the entire satisfaction of the Jockey Club.

wolfatthedoor. It was Denis Atkins and not Ron who rode for Neville Crump. Ron was actually born in that hotbed of jockeys; Stonebridge, North West London!

The No Bombs race was at Worcester - Sat April 21.

Other winners that day were:-

Kris in the Greenham at Newbury.
Tap On Wood in the classic trial at Thirsk. Double Form and Davidgalaxyaffair later on the card.
Night Nurse and Birds Nest in different races at Ayr. Fighting Fit in the Scottish Grand National.
Prominent King at Bangor.

No Bombs ran in Sea Pigeon's Ebor - Mark Birch rode him. He came into the race as an improving 4yo on a 5-timer carrying 8-7 (incl a 4lb penalty). Sea Pigeon was a 9yo carrying 10-0 (incl Jonjo).

i was at thirsk that day ged, remember having a good bet on double form and having a very good day,i used to go to leeds dogs but had packed it up nearly a year before but a friend asked me to go that night and have a meal in the restaurant as he wanted to give his new bird a different night out (he married her) and wanted me to show them the ropes re the dogs, didn't have a bet early on but then bumped into someone who tipped me one up,needless to say it got beat and a few drinks later i had done the thirsk money in and more, myn friend thanked me for a good night out and i was struggling to smile ffs!lol.

In that Ebor, the 3 horses on 7-7 were 2 classy 3yo's from Ryan Price and Henry Cecil, and Donegal Prince (with 5lb claimer Philip Robinson). Also in the race, getting over a stone from Sea Pigeon, were the previous year's first and second, Totowah (M Jarvis) and Lorelene (Cumani).

Some handicapper that Pigeon.

Hello ribero. I was at Newbury. I had a good win on Brian's Venture in the Spring Cup, stepping up to a mile. Had a long enquiry to sit out though. I think I opposed Kris in the Greenham though. (Can't remember why!)

hi ged it was double form that made me remember that day,i think it must have won the 6 furlong condition race? which is presumably still the race they run now,the michael foster memorial stakes?

I was at Chester for both of his Cups. Had a good bet on Assured both years. Ran a stinker the first time, but looked all over the winner the second time until the Pigeon got off the rail inside the final furlong and blitzed him for speed.

i remember watching the his first chester cup at home with my dad,he had backed sea pigeon and i had backed ribellaro? something like that anyhow and he looked like winning (eddie hide rode i think) until sea pigeon loomed up and murdered him,i needed the money more than my old man and he was enjoying his win while i was p!ssed off!

Yes I think Ribellaro made the running (Stoute trained I think). Night Nurse was in it too. My memory is that Sea Pigeon was a lot lower profile tahn his stable companion at the time, but he was the one gambled on.
By:

Ribarbaro it was.

Night Nurse carried 7-8 (Taffy Thomas). Sea Pigeon 8-8 - hadn't run on the flat for 2 seasons.

My memory is that Sea Pigeon went clear some way from home the first time (I could be wrong) - maybe they hadn't cottoned on to his style fully, but he actually had a stone or more in hand that year as it turned out, and I guess they wanted to be sure of the cash.

Seven The Quadrant was in tghe race too - he's been mentioned a couple of times on here recently.

I'm sure some would have backed him - he was a 7yo, set to carry 7-7, ridden by a 7lb claimer (G Douthwaite). (I don't remember the kid at all).
