Wasnt there a Barry Hills short en for the race that got stuffed 7/2 or summat. I can remember King Of Clubs winning at 14-1 the day after there

all i can remember is backing the first winner called almarose i think, and backing a even-ish shot (top horse) later in the day which was involved in a stewards enquiry....hope i've got the year right, i'm pretty sure it was 84.

I can remember Crazy beating Centroline in a photo finish for the Ebor that day with Bucklow Hill back in third place.

just found the result of the great voltiguer stakes of 85 and shardari got disqualified and placed second.i'm sure i had £50 on damister which was the biggest bet i'd had...i was 17 i'd be happu if anyone knew the price for damister.

Damister ridden by Pat Eddery was 7-4 jt fav with Shardari.  Infantry finished 3rd at 7-2 and Mango Express finished 4th at 6-1.  Only 4 ran.

studied the form for the 3 hours it took to get there and we were certain that almarose would win the first.i'm sure it's silks were green and white vertical stripes,had the race won 2 out if my memory seves me well ....funny what sticks in your mind.

probably wore red and white spots and won by a short head

Threads likes this are my favourites bustar.  I never tire of seeing, talking or reading about the horses of the past.  Like yourself I have some wonderful memories.  I'm glad you enjoyed your day at York in 1985 and that it was a profitable one.  Almarose won the seller that day by 1 1/2 lengths from Skybird.  Good luck with your betting in the future.

Was there all three days. England v Aus ashes was also going on when Aus had that Woods, Hildritch, Kapa Wessels, Boon, Border team that was ordinary. Remember watching the Shardari, Damister Voltigeur through bins in the stands ( the big screens haden't come in then)and couldn't help noticing on the step infront was Terry Ramsden smooching with some classy looking bint, not turning his attention to the race until the final furlong when Swinburn started his challenge on Shardari.

onlooker if you have the results for 1981 the day sharpo run at the ebor meeting i,d be grateful, went as a young lad, was a big carson fan but he took a bad fall the day before so unable to see my hero of the time.

the good old days when racing was racing no all weather and your horse could get the race if it had been nearly put through the rails by the winner u couldnt weigh in light there were no fking roulette machines it was about a 90p a pint and 10 **** were about 75p and u could even get a bet on the photo off the on course bookies but on the downside there was no betfair

Shardari was my first big bet.  Had 800 on to win the international at york. (i think).

beat the French filly Miesque about 3 lengths.  (i hope as my memories plays tricks on me.

what a buzz i got as Graham Goode screamed it home.

The 80s really were the great days of racing.   That particular time had so many great horses and jockeys with character.

Although i think the era that you grow up in always seems to be the best for all sorts of reasons.

I can remember that race aberdonia.  It was the first running of the newly named International (previously the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup).  Shardari beat Triptych with Damister a well beaten third.  As you say the 80's were a truly Golden Era of racing.

triptych was a fantastic mare but she met an untimely end with some sort of freask accident if i remember rightly

Correct jonny, she ran into a farm vehicle in 1989 whilst with foal.

re joey brown if i remember right he was the jockey who mistook the 1/2f marker for the winning line at windsor around 81/82.

triptych won the benson and hedges in 87 when the ground turned heavy,great horse in a great era,it was also the first time i took my now wife racing.

Triptych was a wonderful horse.

I backed a Cecil horse first time out called Gayane, spelling probably not right, beat the royal ascot placed Chasing Moonbeams.  Gayane was very fast, anyway had it in a double with Triptych who was running on a sunday in ireland with Tony Cruz on board for the first time. 

Was not happy that Cruz was on board if i remember correctly as he did not know the filly. 

Triptych was beaten into 3rd place (was never going to win that day) by another marvellous horse in Park Express.

Great days, we should never live in the past, but the past was blood great.

Anyone know what happened to Paul Cook....i think i remember him from the 1966 Derby riding the runner up Pretendre ...interested to see he was still riding in 1984;did he stay in racing ?

Paul Cook suffered a serious injury following a fall in the 1989 Portland Handicap at Doncaster.  I don't think he ever rode again after the incident.

Ray Cochrane and Ian Johnson were also injured in the incident.  Cook was riding Madraco when the horse stumbled and fell bringing down Pendor Dancer ridden by Johnson and Tolo ridden by Cochrane.

Was that the incident that led to quite a few Donny meetings being cancelled and the Leger having to be run elsewhere?

Thanks onlooker.  Some memories there.  What a field contesting that Nunthorpe with Sharpo winning it for the second successive year(he also won it in 1982).  Three July Cup winners filling the 1st three places - Moorestyle (1980), Marwell (1981) and Sharpo won it in 1982.  Fabulous.

He won the Schweppes Gold Trophy in 1982 motley01 ridden by John Francome.  He beat Ekbalco by a head with Mount Harvard a neck away in 3rd.  He started at 13-1 that day.
