got no accounts left so having to put a few bets on in the shops.

started today in corals asking for 2k at 3/1 at around 2pm.. offered 200 at 3/1 and rest at sp and they immediately cut the price to 5/2..

fair enough, this trying to get a bet on is just becoming not worth the running around..

its well documented..

went to a smaller chain bookies, with around 30/40 shops..

to save myself walking around 100m to ladbrokes, i ask for 1k on a 5/1 shot... expecting to get maybe 2-300 on..

was offered nothing at 5/1 and 500 at sp...

has it really got to the stage that bookies are not even going to accept sp bets?

why wouldnt a bookie want to take 1k at sp in a handicap 25 mins before a race?

guess now they all have FOBTS they don't wan't to take risk bets, keep the shops open as a front for their new venture...sure they wouldn't have minded you sticking your cash in one of their machines....

wheres the risk in an sp bet.. surely they can just arb it on here?

thats my question... if they shove it on here last minute, 90% of the time sp must be lower..

Seriously mate, i went to watch the last at Ascot yesterday in a city centre Billy's. There were 4 other people in the shop, 2 on the roulette machines, one looking at the virtual dogs and the other guy watching the race with me.

A few years ago the place would be packed with people cheering on various horses at such a big meeting, now, nobody in a bookies seems to care for the horse racing. Sad.

toldi could have 10 e/w and on kailaini only 10 win and nothing e/w. told them to f off and put the phone down.
it really is becoming too bad to be true now.
korals max is 5e/w before 9am.

Bookmarkers long ago ceased to be that and are now just accountants/number crunchers but I do wonder sometimes do they have a set figure in mind they are willing to lay or do they just undercut whatever you ask for regardless, so that if you asked for more, would they end up inadvertently dropping you back down to what you initially wanted anyway?
Report FEN-TIGER June 22, 2012 6:07 AM BST
Ima  . . they dont want your business they just try to pi ss yopu off.

Corals done this yrs ago (pre betfair) it was part of there training . . . when of cause you had to have training.Cry

Where told if anybody is from a "warm" sauce muck them about, we dont want there business.

Nuts innit it, they have shops everywhere, had/have warm sauces marking there card but piss these people off, instead of takeing the bet, adjusting the price thus saveing the company a bomb.

But oh no much better to play silly stupid fooking games.CryCry

Why on earth bet in Shops:
Worse prices
Aggro from ignorant staff and cant get on
Cant lay on sofa watching races
Full of brain dead people

Only reason they will continue to exist:
People want immediate cash and cant wait 3-days
Some dont have bank accounts
Betfair dont show morning BAGS
Plenty low lives around

Never a truer word. That was then, this is now.

Get rid of the machines (impossible) and maybe you'd get LBOs back again, as intended.

The whole industry should be put infront of a firing squad.

Unless you are a born loser or bet on wooden dogs or pump money into FOBTs then you wont be getting on.

Horse race betting is secondary to betting shops since exchange betting.

The high street firms want 1430 fixtures a year just to bleed every mug dry who plays roulette, lucky numbers or backs ar 140% on cartton racing.

It really has got like that

most of the comments I read here are true. That is why I came to the only conclusion I could come to. Stay out of the shops. No good moaning about it .Wait till the money runs out the government is throwing at goodfornothing lowlife. That will be the end of the so called Bookies. They are nothing but fruit machine operators
Report Alias June 22, 2012 12:31 PM BST
I don't think that the authorities, local licensing committees for instance, realise what the situation is. You actually have mini casinos on every high street in the country and I can't believe that was the intention when FOBTs were given the go ahead. A comic aspect is that people can go into any LBO and lose their wages on a machine, but the law still does not allow for the sale of National Lottery tickets in LBOs. Nuts.

The high street shops could manage quite easily without UK horse racing, the young generations now only want the fobt's and football accas, horse racing doesn't come into the equation hence they don't want to take a bet as they haven't got the edge.

Those pining for the good old days must be too young to remember them.

Even just 20 years ago early prices were available on no more than 20% of a day's races.

It's annoying getting knocked back when you ask for a score on a 5/2 fav in a class 6 at Brighton, but twenty years ago you would have had to take SP or the 7/4 opening show from the course on such a race.

The firms simply shouldn't be pricing up every race. They didn't do it 20 years ago, because they knew it would cost them money, and the situation's even worse now, with Betfair alerting every punter to where the value is.

Declining any money at all at SP is another matter. Utterly cretinous. That is simply throwing money away.

Report bf_fananatic June 27, 2012 12:21 AM BST
High Street bookmakers have learned many ways to pump up profits over the years and this is the reason for them running from core sports laying which will  one day haunt them as exchanges take over this most valuable prize and here is a list of what bookmakers have done over the years to increase profits but destroy themselves slowly but surely...

BOOKMAKERS HARE BRAINED SCHEMES THAT HAVE SEEDED THEIR DOOM AS BETTING DINOSAURS...

1.....Introduced Tricast races for more events, This action to create bigger profit margin as the formula for both forecasts and tricasts more so ensures you get rediculaous low amounts of returns for a very small chance and they didnt stop at that as their clumsy unstoppable greed then made them further reduce as many prices via the over-round to ensure smaller dividends on these tyoes of bets, the end result is odds that are percieved to be a joke by all punters as now mug markets are the order of the day on nearly every race on bookmakers monitors.

2..... Ballooning the over-round post 10% betting tax abolition, When the 10% betting tax was dropped by the goverment the bookmaers could of carried on with the over-rounds as they were but instead decided to take over the 10% that was given to punters pockets by reducing the odds and now they have very silly prices that look like only a real mug would bet with them when much better odds are avialable on exchanges, another big mistake that helped exchanges get an important foot hold in the betting markets.

3.....increased events matinees , this move was introduced to increase the yeild by haveing as many quick events as possible to firstly create faster turnover of punters cash and secondly create more quick adrealin fixes for shop punters with little time to select a good runner in the next race.

4....Virtual gamingthis currently is the blue chips product for high street firms as they rent and create thier own brands of virtual rubbish to avoid paying levy to the HBA as they can now claim less of the turnover is from the race course action and this is why they openly refuse big bets on racing in favor of Virtual tat and FOBT high addiction games to pump huge amounts of money from punters with little help from staff from the damage caused such huge personal losses incurred from this casino style fast fix gambling.

Now the high street firms are going to be targeted by hungry tax office gurus whom cant help but notice the huge revenue from this product and the licensing of it which really isnt a good thing as the government rather than controlling drinking, gambling and smoking addition, itself gorges on huge taxes applied by governments that having bled British industry to death in the 80,s, and 90s and have now little choice but to target the masses spending habits to aid its personal crusades of poor polices and spending.

All I can say is to every body hold your heads up high , vote more carefully and only use exchanges as we can happily bet with each other using a  "fair system". Wink

So if they don't want to bet on racing any more, isn't it time for the government, who instead of setting up a T0te monopoly when deregulation came in, gave license to these companies to provide the British people with betting services, to set up a State run mechanism to replace them (it doesn't have to be a T0te system)...
