I was at York races yesterday, admittedly on a family birthday outing in the cheap seats in the centre of the course
so obviously not where any serious racegoer would be. Anyway there were 4 so called bookies standing there offering odd 2 or 3 points lower than the SP, example Sholaan was never any bigger than 7/1 on their boards. It stands to reason that the people betting with them were only there for the day out and had no idea they were actually being robbed by these crooks. Surely the racecourse executives must be aware of these people and should ban them from the course, after all they want people to come back again, and I am damn sure they wont when the see the real SP and wonder why they couldn,t get it. There were plenty of other honest bookies there, but these 4 were on one end, all grouped together and not once did I see any variation in price from each other.

the art of bookmaking is to take as much money as possible at the smallest price that you can.
your 3 or 4 will have taken their share of £1 each way bets and little else. good luck to them.
are you trying to say it is impossible to walk ten yards for above s.p. bets which were available everywhere. the amount business was very low all over the silver due to adverse weather

adge, I think the OP is making the point that many casual racegoers do not understand the intracacies of running a book and they are getting robbed. I appreciate bookies need to make a living and I do not object to 115-120% books, but when there is obvious collusion to get 140%+, it aint right and it aint no good for racing!
very interesting moral issue here , think of it like this also : I have a shop. I go to my baked-beans and change the price ticket from 45p to £47.50. I stand back and watch : people keep buying them just the same as if nothing had happened.
do we have a 'duty' to treat people fair or should we take them for all we can and deny any sense of responsibilty to other people?

first time racegoers often bet with the TOTE, now if you are looking at robbery................. should we ban that?

have sent an email to racing post asking for discussion on bookies not honouring even half the adv prices on tom sel also closing accounts whe stakes are £10-20 want to involve pundits am told ive got no chance

come for the 'day out' and paid extortionate prices for entry, food and drink. They then took prices from these bookmakers which were points below other bookmakers on track. They obviously had money to throw away so I had no sympathy. This practice is legalised robbery, racecourses should really monitor and act when this takes place.
On reflection the chances of racecourses protecting racegoers from bookmakers out to rip them off is zero. It would be like the pot calling the kettle black. Racecourses are ripping their customers off with the price of entry, food, drink and on most racing days the availability of quality racing.
