Assuming that everyone who bets keeps records i'd be interested to know how much the average punter wins or loses.I bet in modest amounts usually between £20 and £50 and have had hundreds of bets since beginning of January with a net win of £300 which is a tiny return for the amount of effort.

usually between £20 and £50

I'm up over the 4 years I've been on here.My golden rule is ALWAYS to bet the same level stake and it's working for me.

Including when I started gambling up until 2009 I'm a down a huge amount, I was a madder.

In the last three years on here and daq I'm around 3 or 4k up, it was wayyy more than that but I did my nuts in spectacular stylee to an embarrassing amount at The Breeders Cup last year.
Report posy June 8, 2012 8:56 AM BST
Roquebrune have been thinking about your comment which has an obvious consistency about it however am wondering if it would make more sense to bet to win a consistent amount on every bet. For example if one sets a win target of £100 then if betting a horse at 2/1 you would stake £50 and at 4/1 £25.

Anyone got any experience of betting this way.
Report sageform June 8, 2012 9:23 AM BST
I am £102 down on the year while betting most days. That compares to £1500 up on financial investment (it was £9000 up at the end of april) so it is not a significant part of my financial affairs. I bet for fun but invest for income. My profit/loss on betting per year is about equal to my profit/loss from 100 point movement in the FTSE 100.
Report sageform June 8, 2012 9:26 AM BST
As far as staking is concerned, it depends on how and why you bet. If I have researched a race thoroughly, I might have a decent sized bet but if I am having what I call a "boredom bet" on a race that happens to be on next, it is usually only £2 or £3. I also back and lay a lot.

A couple of grand down so far this year but as a lot of my punting is to do with Godolphin stables I do expect to recover over the next 4 months when their winners tend to come.

The weather dents my confidence and it has effected the size of fields either being too wet or too dry.

The Sherwood stable has been extremely unlucky for me, what with horses seemingly given lousy rides and horses pulled up for reported breathing problems and on 3 occasions jockeys falling off between flights when cantering its not been the stables best season but I am frightened not to persevere.

Anyway, I live in hope. luck to all.

If someone has a 20,000+ bank here, then yes I would believe that you are making some nice profits through trading and minimising risk. To anyone else, it's hit and miss, as just backing and laying certain horses can be very random and thus it is extremely hard to make a consistent profit.

I only started using the site last week after taking a hiatus,  but I've just been using it for the forum because I like to use the 'insurebet' on bookies sites when I am backing a horse.

For example if one sets a win target of £100 then if betting a horse at 2/1 you would stake £50 and at 4/1 £25.

Hi Posy, Personally think that is a horrible way to bet. If you fancy two horses equally, one is Evs the other is 10-1, why put £100 on one and only £10 on the other? Now if you put £10 on the Evs horse and £100 on the 10-1 shot, you are likely to be on the right track to long term profit if you've a good selection process.

To say that you regularly and consistently make a lot of money, is obviously horse****. Now post two screenshots of your profit, the second screenshot highlight all text on the page with your cursor so we know you haven't mocked it up.

misselephantstone, you are an exception to the rule, if your copy and paste P&L is to be believed. I would prefer to see an actual screenshot though in order to satisfy my scepticism.  May I ask how you make such profits from such small stakes if it is true?

Far from it I assure you. I would rather die in a car accident than take betting advice of someone who needs egotistical reassurance from an online forum

Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 12:59 PM BST
how do I do a screeshot,I,m just copying and pasting.
How do I do it?
I study form, reruns most days,I initially look for what I consider value and bet or lay appropriately,I use gruss software
and have set limits on each click,I use a "fill or kill" option
as I think I am okay at spotting during a race when a price maybe wrong for the individual set of circumstance at that precise moment(the fill or kill cancels my bet immediately if not matched rather than leave in the system)apart from that I dont know what to tell you.If you tell me how to do a screenshot I will.

someone who needs egotistical reassurance from an online forum

The OP asked a question. I answered along with everyone else.

If the people who reply saying they profit are liars or seeking reassurance then whats the point in the question ffs YSDC?! Surely the wuestion should be asked 'who is losing? because anyone who replies saying they are in profit is in a lose-lose situation clearly.
Report Brother Mouzone June 8, 2012 1:03 PM BST
I always assume that people who claim to be losing are lying to gain sympathy and cyber huggles unless they post screenshots of their p+l hear.
Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 1:03 PM BST
I must admit I am surprised why anyone would think I would lie about earning £6.05 per hour but I am in the unenviable position of needing this to boost my other income as my other job has suffered a downturn due to the current climate and, like a lot of others,I overextended during the good times.
Report Red Hiney Monkey June 8, 2012 1:03 PM BST
Spankmaster,

What do you think happens to all that money you lose? For every £1 lost someone has won 95p-£1. This is called an exchange.

Now dont you feel silly? When you are doing your conkers, it's being p!ssed down the urinal on fine wine and food by me.

Report spankmaster June 8, 2012 1:04 PM BST
Look, all my point is, is this:

If I was in profit by a couple of K, then I would want to back up my claims with proof, especially if people are questioning the validity of my claims. Now you are claiming over 20k in profit, and many people, myself included, will find that hard to believe, without proof. Why not back it up with a screenshot and then I will hold my hand up and apologise for not believing you.

Otherwise... http://goo.gl/ufvmg

Report holywell June 8, 2012 1:11 PM BST
I asked for my P / L earlier this morning, I still haven't received it so it may take time.
Report Red Hiney Monkey June 8, 2012 1:13 PM BST
The question was not my last 3 months P&L (which incidentally is -£1115.)

Over the last 12 months I am +20k, as already stated. and over the last 48 months I am somewhere around the +40k mark
Report Red Hiney Monkey June 8, 2012 1:13 PM BST
sorry, past 24 months is +40k
Report spankmaster June 8, 2012 1:14 PM BST
To those wondering about their P&L:

Simply go to 'My account'

Then 'Withdraw funds from betfair'

There you will see your net deposits (total deposited/withdrawn) ie. your P&L
Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 1:18 PM BST
I must admit that I have often considered with everything else going on where most of my profit comes from?I think it would be nice to know if the majority of my in run play is gained from people consolidating positions (traders, bookmakers etc)as I really cant believe sometimes there are punters actually offering the prices I see sometimes (esp in lay bets)as surely they wouldnt still be around, and is this pot going to change in the near future? This might not make a lot of sense but I know what im trying to sayCrazy

Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 1:28 PM BST
And that speil about only 1.5% of betfair customers earn more than £15,000 I find quite difficult to believe,as I dont feel I have any great ability but I do spend vast amounts of time on study,so maybe that is the answer."the more I practice the luckier I get"
Report Red Hiney Monkey June 8, 2012 1:29 PM BST
Would like to state also that, to anyone refusing to believe you can make money betting in-running using TV pictures, this profit is 100% from In-running betting using TV pictures at home (ATR & RUK)
Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 1:30 PM BST
Yes same here, well actually live video(when its working) and RUK.
Report misselephantstone June 8, 2012 1:35 PM BST
But I think its important to state that, even tho I am using live pics, and I do know they are behind ,I am basing my bets on what my form study has led me to believe will happen rather than what I am actually seeing, tho if the race doesnt unfold the way I think then I dont bet.
