Leg irons? I'm not suggesting national service, although interesting that certain developed nations in the EU do implement this sort of conditionality.
I am suggesting that this sort of work is no more menial than flipping a burger of mixing cement of site, and whilst the money might not stack up, net, net it would be comparable based on the backdated support offered to these people through the myriad of benefits on the table in the prior 12 months. |

Fraud is fraud whether it's redeeming a money off coupon at your local Tesco, to rinsing the Government and the benefits system - neither is right.
As for the Government not shouting about the unclaimed sums, it's surely up to the individual to seek these out, indeed the Citizens Advice bureau would be a good starting point. There are plenty of public entities available to support in seeking the right degree of Government benefit of which the individual is entitled. |

Ramjam,there are people in this country who can barely function in a normal way,look at Hello for instance or older people who are too proud to claim.It is utter hypocrisy to go on about the amount that is lost due to fraud whilst not mentioning that they would be worse off if people claimed what they are entitled to.

I was beyond r-a-g-i-n-g when Tesco took on staff through workfare and this is just more of the same... Cut form the same cloth as A4e with their same "wanting to help" mantra when in reality it's about wanting to make as much money as they can.
that said, I do think unemployed people should have to do at least some work for benefits, and surely the ideal solution to this is, given the cuts in the public sector, is to reserve 10% of all public sector jobs for the long-term unemployed. There could be minimum of 6 months placement within the public sector at X% over benefits. Of course it will never happen because Unison won't let it happen.... We hear daily how bankers are the enemy, well it's about time the spotlight was turned on public sector unions - they do a huge amount of damange to this country. No employee is ever at fault, the most ridiculous excuses all have to be listened to, no-one is ever at fault for their actions - it's always nasty bosses or stress in the workplace. I don't know why they don't just be done with it and remove everyone's backbone. |

for what it's worth watchit - here are my four things:
1. No one to be allowed to breed until they are 30 years of age (we'd do fertility checks beforehand thoough to identity those who may have problems) 2. No prison sentences to be served concurrently. If you burglar 10 houses you get 10 separate sentencs and you stay in prison until you have served each and every one of them. 3. All prisons to follow the Grendel type of therapy. If people are screwed up going in, they'll be a damn sight more screwed out when you release them. Prison should be place of help as well as punishment. 4. All religion to be abolished - does nothing but create division and distrust. |
