Never as good as some people made out imop, certainly not in the same league as the really top jockeys down the years. Whenever any sportsman doesn't put what he's doing first he loses it immediately. Fallon hasn't put racing first in a long time.

Couldn´t believe the ride he gave Pintrada in the last at Haydock today. I know it was pulling hard early, but instead of getting him settled he let it pull its way to the front where it burned itself out.

bobby I have no time for the man but to say he was never any good is silly just look at his record in the derby, brilliant jockey at keeping a horse balanced and ready for a burst of speed at the end of the race but for me he was never the same after his fall at ascot, I think in his fallons case it may have something to do with karma, so he can expect alot of sh!t coming his way.

Jockeys are only as good as the horses they get to ride ...at any age. HTH.

but Fallon is Fallon, he is his own worst enemy.

races are races ...Derby no more 'difficult' to ride in or win than any 12f handicap.
There is no difference from the point of view of riding -the only difference is in the media hype and general coverage.

vubiant,
I cannot believe you think 1m4f around epsom is the same as 1m4f on most other tracks.

valuebetting --It's not -but what's the issue ?
All jockeys who ride in the Derby will have ridden around Epsom before in either 10 or 12f races . It's not rocket science -you see where it goes up , where it goes down , where it goes around , where the camber is etc.
There are other tracks that are similar as well -e.g. Lingfield and Brighton . Normal professionals in any field get to know the variables that can influence performance -golfers and courses , tennis players and courts etc.
In any case ,the track factor affects the horses more than the jockeys.

vubiant, my point was with bobby saying he was never any good and I was using fallons record at riding in the derby, a track where you have to keep your horse well balanced a thing alot of jocks cannot do half as good as fallon, I take your point about professionals in any field being good or getting better with experience but that does not seem the case with some of the jocks riding today, also take the point the track effects the horse more that the jock but if you have a jock who can't keep the balanced you are fooked. imo

p.s I am not a fallon lover  Grin

At Epsom I think a horse either handles the undulations or it doesn´t. Connections only find out on the day - but the jockey makes about 1% difference imo.

Barzalona done one last year on his first ride in the Derby, plenty of horses have won from what some might describe as supposed impossible positons at Epsom, Erhaab, New Approach and Lammtara to name just 3 off the top of my head.

I'd say many winners of the Derby down the years didn't handle the track but their class carried them home.
Yet another racing myth doing the rounds (in a sport awash with myths taken as fact without any basis to prove these supposed facts?) that you have to handle the track at Epsom, no you don't!, you just have to be better than the rest and if you are than no matter what track your racing on you'll more often than not win.

My opinion and theory here is based soley on what I've seen. I attend the Derby every year and I was a follower and fan of KF for many years.

From that, it seems to me that KF relies largely on an explosive, fast finish. If/when the horse cannot or doe not respond as he wants, then it's end of story; failure, out like a light etc.

Sometimes, as at Chester this year, KF does attempt to push on and make all, but, personally, I take that as a negative and viryually chuck my ticket away, when I see that.

I know nothing about racing cars, but I guess for the top drivers, the car either responds when they want it to, or not. It looks to me as if KF follows this idea. He may have picked it up in America.
Certainly, once he crosses the line he seems to switch off and brake immediately - even on winners. Confused

Getting back to the Derby, several of the bigger -priced winners have finished with a surprising ( to me) zoom.
Last year's and Sir Percy, to name but two. That's the bit that counts, imo.

LOL....yeah lets focus on 2 poor rides 7 years apart and ignore the 6 jockey championships, the 5 x 200 winners in a season, 3 x Derby wins, 4 x Oaks wins, 4 x 2000gns wins, 4 x 1000gns wins plus numerous multiple other UK top winning races like the Coronation Cup, Eclipse and King George as well as multiple worldwide top class races like the Irish Derby/Oaks/Leger/Champion Stakes, Arcs, Arlington Million, multiple Breeders' Cup races, HK Vase, Italian Oaks, Dubai Sheema Classic....even I'm getting bored with listing them all and that's after leaving out numerous Group level other wins too, although while we're at it why don't we just sum up Frankie Dettori's career by the fact he dropped his hands and lost 3rd in last year's Oaks! Shocked

Dont think KF is finished by any means, right ammunition big occasion KF will/can get the job done, its the day to day dross thats he cant handle, thats unprofessional and thats why although a excellent jockey its his unprofessionalism that will do for him in the end.

How can he get himself motivated for some nonsense race at Folkestone or Beverley for example when he has had the glory days? I would never be put off backing him on a mount but it's hard to make an argument that he wasn't the force he once was.

Of course good horses won those races silvergreaser but good horses won them for every other jockey too who has won those same races, plus there were plenty of other good horses and jockeys behind Fallon when he was winning them and you can still be sure that some were good tactical rides or others that he won in close finish but the main point is you don't hear people calling Lester Piggott, Steve Cauthen or Pat Eddery average and never any good when they were winning some of those same races, do you?

That's also ignoring the fact that to even get on the quality of horses just to be riding in those kind of races or to have had the stable jockey jobs that he has, you have to have shown something ability wise and there are plenty of others jockeys out there who have not only not ridden as many Gr1 winners as Fallon all over the world but plenty more who aren't even deemed good enough to even ride in them let alone win any.

Derby winners and other glory days in any jockeys career are a very small part of it numbers wise and the likes of Folkstone and Beverley is the bread and butter stuff for all of them and that include Dettori, Hughes and Moore and in past season even more so for the likes of Hanagan and let's not forget Fallon still won a classic last season and went very close with a couple of 2nds too and only a few weeks ago was winning a $2million Gr1 race at Meydan and was set to ride one of the favourites in the 2000gns this season..

Let's face it though and I keep saying this but some people seem to have trouble giving credit where it's due if they don't like somebody and as I also keep saying, with many of the things posted about Fallon on here people have an agenda and any other jockey and it's not even an issue. Happy
