Michael Jarvis had more of a predictable pattern once he went public, with his bread and butter being slow maturing handicappers rising through the handicap until reaching their ceilings, some ending up as successful Group performers, whether they be sprinters such as Petong, or stayers such as Lady Beaverbrook's Easter Sun. And as for those up to competing in top company at an early stage, he nurtured Marienbard early in his career so could easily have trained two Arc winners.
I find Roger Varian very difficult to assess as to whether he punches his weight with the quality of animal he receives. Nice bit of target training to bag that Musselburgh handicap a few weekends back with that one that reappeared after a long absence - though I suppose it's not the feat it once may have been - I remember thinking wow! wow! when Major Hern won the Brigadier Gerard with Bedtime after an absence of over 18 months, but a similar feat now would not be greeted with such a reaction.
