--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was 1978, my first day as a racecourse bookmaker's workman, at my beloved Yarmouth.

I was working in the old East Ring in the centre of the course, (now defunct).

I was working for a bookmaker named Albert Wood from Strelley in Nottingham.

My first steps to becoming a racecourse bookmaker, hopefully.

After exchanging a few pleasantries, he began to explain what i had to do.

After a little while, he said,

"Go and get, the ices"

He did not seem to enamoured, when 10 minutes later, i came back with 3 cornets and a wafer!

Well, how the f*ck did i know, that 'the ices', were 'the prices'!

Sadly, it's all been downhill since and i now find myself, fronting the, "Anybody fancy a thick'un" joint!

Sad

Carlisle in May early 1990's, I turned up in a nice new suit. It was freezing cold and it chucked it down all afternoon. The rep asked me where my coat was and I just shrugged my shoulders . . . .

A lesson learnt

Hi Barry,

I remember when you used to bet in Tattersalls at Yarmouth.

I would have been working for, 'Duggie Pye', Alan, at that time!

Photo:Yarmouth Races - the bookie seems to be paying out for once!

That is in fact, 'yours truly', clerking for Albert Wood (Circa 1978).

I have a print of this photograph on my office desk!

How smart i looked back then, suit, shirt and tie, (Mac, nowhere to be seen)!

What the f*cking hell happened to me?

Still cant place this skinto fella - even looking at that sepia photo !! Does anybody have a description that would help ? If he's been going to Yarmouth since 1973 shouldn't the course name a race after him ? How about The Keep It Under Your Hat/Mac Selling Stakes ? Laugh

Alan Pye, who bet under 'Duggie Pye' (His Father), was a great bookmaker. The best caller of a bet and i have clerked for many. There was no, 13/8 to £70 with Alan, it was, (as you know, 113 3/4 to 70). He was a charming, very intelligent man. When going to Newmarket, we would pick him up in Norwich and he would always sit in the back of the car with, The Times Crossword. I can't remember too many times, (if you will excuse the pun), when it wasn't completed by the time we reached our destination!

Interesting to hear that the Hod was carried off from Yarmouth Dogs, it might have been the same one that was sold on ebay recently, not sure how much it went for in the end...
