All these performers saying they want to win Gold for their country is utter tripe.

They want to win Gold for their own benefit (getting loads of £ from their sponsors and getting new sponsorship deals).

And for the people who have spent fortunes on tickets....

I really can't understand why people want to go and watch all that rubbish.

Lets be honest if you are in the stand at the big stadium you won't see a thing anyway.

They will be watching the big screen 99% of the time...why not just stay at home and watch in the comfort of your own home...?

I can't believe so many people have been sucked in to the 'Olympic Fever'...

So much for people struggling to put food on the table if they can afford to buy tickets for this nonsense.

I won't be watching any of it and i hope it ends up a complete and utter damp squib...



Haven't read all the thread, but Hibby makes a valid point. The only even I will be watching is Usain Bolt trying to win the 100 sprint to see if he can break the world record again.

And could someone please explain to me when football became athletics, or for that matter, archery?????

I'd love to go to the athletics,but only if paying sensible prices.Went to the 1970 Commonwealth Games and still have vivid memories of Lackie and  Ian Stewart,Kip Keino et al and,most especially,the best I've ever seen,Marilyn Neufville taking a whole second off the 400m World record.Saw her a couple of years ago presenting awards at a local club meeting,of which she had been a member.I can understand why some people are prepared to pay big bucks to be there but ask again,how many athletics tickets were sold to the GB public?

Like all posters Hibby, I only disagree with them if I think they're in the wrong. I'm not one to hold back if I disagree.In this case I think you are spot on. If they were held in Aberdeen, I'd go for a cruise until the "athletes" were home and the rapier missiles were taken off the top of my home.

The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world. It's the only time it will be held in this country in my lifetime. I cannot wait to go and be part of it and find it strange that people can be so against it, apart from maybe those living in London who have no interest and will be inconvenienced. If you have no interest don't tune in but I'm looking forward to being part of the event.

It's ridiculous to say it's better to stay at home and watch it on tv as you'll get a better view. You could say that about most sporting events, football, horse racing, darts etc. I enjoy watching them all on tv but it's much better when you're there.

As for the competitors representing their countries, i do agree that they're not doing it for their country. However, whilst money is a factor in some of the sports for the vast majority of competitors it's the prestige of competing, reaching finals and winning medals. I won't be cheering on everyone just because they're British.  For example any of our drug cheats i hope will fail miserably. However, if you watch sport you get drawn to certain people so i for one would be elated if Jess Ennis, Mo Farah, Rebecca Adlington, Chris Hoy and a number of others managed to win gold. I certainly don't believe any of them are in it for the money and sponsorship.

Hibby, I'm talking about those 4 i mentioned. I just don't believe that heptathletes, distance runners, cyclists and swimmers enter their sports to make money. Compared to other sports the rewards are relatively small. I'm sure all 4 do well but when they started the motivation would have been to win medals/events.

Watchit, I got my tickets through the normals channels in the first ballot. I applied for lots of tickets and managed to get 4. (2 tickets for 2 events).

lots of those "official products" of the olympics will be 2 for 1 in tesco shortly after the games imv

If the British people were allowed to vote on whether they wanted multiple billions spent on Olympics or upgrading hospitals , upgrading schools or into paying for more police etc. , i suspect the overated , overpriced olympics would only get a small percentage of the vote .... a total waste

Hibby, i think you're missing the point of sport. Most people participate to achieve goals, to become the best, or just to take part. I have no idea about the finances of people like Mo Farah and Rebecca Adlington but I'd be extremely confident they did not enter their sports to earn money. I know you love the darts and I assume other sports too. The Olympics clearly does not interest you but i find it surprising that you call it garbage. Many people would say the same about darts. Imo they would be wrong as it's one of the great sports to watch for drama. I guess it's each to their own. For me the Olympics is the greatest sporting event on earth and I'm going to enjoy it from start to finish, particularly on the 2 days i'll be in the Olympic stadium.

Looking forward to the cycling, especially the road race, and the track and field

Wife had tickets for synchronised swimming, through a c0ck up they oversubscribed by 10,000, got a call to change them to whatever we wanted so now have tickets for an athletics finals session, main event that night being the mens 400 metres.

Don't understand the fascination some have with the Olympics to be honest.

For me, 99% of it is desperately boring. Take out the sprint finals and it's like watching the entire production footage of the Lord of the Rings, just to see the last 5 minutes.

The other thing that gets me is that every four years there seems to be even more events than in times gone by. I'm personally looking forward to the shirt ironing and cake decorating contests this year though.

For sheer excitement the marathon has got to be ....right down there.

Then when you wake up there's the weightlifting with Malodorov attempting a new Bulgarian record in the snatch.

i don't love darts asparagus...i've had a few bets on it but i very rarely watch it tbh...

if you love the olympics then that's good but it's not for me.

when these people were youngsters and took the sport up i do believe they took it up because they enjoyed doing the sport but i do also believe that once these people get a bit older they do have £ signs in their eyes and it's a combination of self-glory and £ which drives them on.

if ALL you got for winning a gold medal was a gold medal and NO financial reward...would these people still be doing their sport or would they be working in their local bookies or working for the royal mail or milkmen or milkwomen...?

there's NOWT wrong with making £...but what i don't like is when people come on the telly and say things like 'i want to win a gold medal for MY country and the people'....i find that very irritating indeed and it makes me sick tbh...

most people do it for THEMSELVES...why don't they just say so...?

Hope springs eternal as my dad used to say as he used to give me a colly buckie up to easter road,to watch the famous five,gordon smith was a mate of his and i had many good times chatting to him as a kid.

They were a cracking team used  to stand up there in easter road in rain snow just to watch them,you were always confident they would win in those days quite phenomenal.

It's a long time to remember back pretty sure it was injury's they were being hacked badly on the park i think alex cropley broke his leg and was never the same, lack of strength in depth and not the financial clout of the big two did not help.

On the evening of 19th May,the Hearts will be having a party,the Hibs will be having an early night.

Darts is not in the olympics. I mentioned darts because i thought Hibby was a lover of it. Must have got him muddled up with someone else. Anyway, I've got no issue with people not being interested in the Olympics. I just don't understand why people are slagging it off. I love sport but have no interest in cricket but I don't go around moaning about it.

Hibby, I don't really understand why you expect the athletes to have no financial reward. They provide entertainment to people and don't get paid massive money anyway compared to many other sports. I don't recall seeing anyone interviewed saying they want to win for their country. However, as i said before the vast majority are in it to win medals/championships and to be the best. They need money to survive like the rest of us but it's not the motivation.

The track cycling mens sprint will be easier to win than the world title, as either Chris Hoy or Jason Kenny will miss out. How many events across the Olympics will be devalued like this?

asparagus,I'm with you on this.If you've read through the whole thread you will have seen that I first saw Mo Farah race when he was about 13 and I'm sure that money was never his motivation in athletics.

On the down-side,I've always been against the expansion.I'll be watching nearly all of the athletics,most of the cycling and some of the swimming and a couple of football matches but have little interest in anything else.

I was at the stadium on Monday for the final session of the University Champs.£5 to watch 21 finals,but I was more interested in seeing the Stadium than the actual athletics.I hope that you have a great time on your 2 visits.You will be amused to see the choreography which the track officials have to undertake when laying out and removing the lane numbers,starting blocks and hurdles.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for your tickets and do you know where you will be sitting?
