Kris had been just below top class as a two year old, the climax to his season coming in the form of the Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury. The Bruce Hobbs trained Tromos went into the winter as clear favourite for the following year's 2000 Guineas. The following April, Tromos was eclipsed in the Craven Stakes by the Cecil-trained Lyphard's Wish. As this happened, Kris was being fine-tuned for his Guineas preparation, the Greenham Stakes, which he duly won. The defeat of Tromos catapulted Kris to favouritism for the Guineas, but a slight setback meant that on race day he was perhaps one gallop short. In the event, three horses emerged from the Dip with chances but it was the 20/1 shot Tap On Wood, ridden by the recently-arrived Steve Cauthen, who gained victory by a narrow margin from Kris, with Young Generation a close third.

Nice work Delta.
Sure I also remember Brough Scott sittng in the TV studio with Alex Bird. Bird chundered on before the race how it was a racing certainty. It was a2/5 shot and that we should all lump on. Huge embarrassemnt all round and some long faces in th studio when it got turned over. |
|
By:
Thanks Delta. You've rekindled some fond memories of Lyphard's Wish and Kris.

By:
I read that Yarmi's fav horse was Lyphards Wish and he did loads of gooduns at Henrys...
|
|
By:
Lyphard's Wish went on to win the Dante before finishing 5th behind Troy in the Derby.
|
|
By:
that was some Derby with 2 subsequent Classic Winners not in the 1st 8 home
2 Subsequent Eclipse winners a King George & Champion Stakes winners left trailing in Troys wake. |

Huggy - the Craven was run on April 17.
No big sprint that day. The Abernant was run on the 18th (won by Vaigly Great, from Boldboy and Gypsy Dancer). The Boldboy stakes was run on the following day, the 19th, over 6f. |

Warmington was well named...never noticed at the time. Tromos was so exciting.....George Cambanis of Stilvi fame. Greeks had a few quid in those days.Mr Hobbs was some trainer.

Henry Cecil ran 6 horses, in 5 races, at the 3-day meeting, and won 4 of them, including the Craven, the Nell Gwyn (with One In A Million), and the Wood Ditton. I think they might have been his first runners of the season. I remember being in the bookies on the Tuesday, mainly to see (or listen) how Tromos got on, and thinking I might just as well back his horses blindly. That's what my dad did with Murless horses.

Talking of Greeks i remember on derby night going to Anemos, a Greek eaterie on Charlotte Street, where much to my surprise all the waiters claimed to have backed Troy when we knew half of them had of course lumped on Ela Mana Mou in the shop earlier that day!!
Some things dont change ![]() |
|
By:
Geoff was right of course, that was some derby and the form was franked time and time again, Dickens Hill won the Eclipse, Northern Baby the champion and Ela Mana Mou was some horse as a 4yo!!
|
|
By:
Anyone name the 2 subsequent Classic winners?
|
|
By:
I had a grand on One in a Million for the 1000Gs. Funny,rarely have a score on a classic nowadays.No kids...no fear I suppose.

Very interesting point about the form of Troy's Derby...and how he savaged them all too!
Year in year out, Derby form is as bad as it gets but 1979 was exceptional. Has anyone got the entire field to peruse over? |

Thanks Geoff - I knew it would be Son Of Love (answer to your question) but I couldn't remember it running.
Niniski won the Irish Leger that year and I did remember he ran at Epsom! Great memories reading through that lot and it's hard to remember one as good as that renewal. |

Alex Bird had an enormous bet on TROMOS when he won the Dewhurst.
And he considered him unbeatable in the Gns. Bird even broke his customary low profile to appear on TV shortly before the Gns and he said, "If TROMOS doesn't win 3 lengths going away I'll be a disappointed man." When TROMOS defected from the Gns at the last minute Bird was shattered. TROMOS is an anagram of Motors. |
|
By:
That made it two certainties in consecutive years coming from the Dewhurst to 3yo careers following after the sadly named Try My Best
![]() Who did'nt and finished last ![]() |
|
By:
Soft ground that year Zil
Was it the easily forgettable Roland Gardens the winner that year? |
|
By:
Yep, i think he was the last 2000 winner that took in the Epsom Blue Riband the week before!!
|
|
By:
Wasn't Habibti (against Chief Singer) supposed to be another of Alex Bird's certainties?
I don't know how those geezers ever made it pay because everything they every tip is very short and invariably gets stuffed! Were these tales of professional gamblers, just a hoax from the bookies to make everyone think it was THEM who was the 'special one' who could actually be the alchemist! |

probably the curse of the TV camera![]() Thought he made his dosh on Photo betting mostly?? |

By:
And you'd have given up the game if you'd had of backed those two and the very next year punted Nureyev
![]() How that got slung still baffle me |
|
By:
PS - Alex Bird saw Carson's stand-in on Habibti (Piggott) as being at least a three pound advantage
![]() I know Piggott was worth his weight in gold, and is undoubtedly the best jockey there has been, but Carson really knew that filly, and how it could be construed as an asset to have 'The Pig' on board, baffled me at the time ![]() It still does! |
