Last fence error costs amateur rider first win
By Tom Kerr racingpost.com AMATEUR rider George Gorman received a 14-day ban after mistakenly bypassing the final fence at Newbury when clear and heading for his first win on Merry Vic. The 17-year-old was having just his second ride under rules in the 3m hunters' chase, riding a horse owned and trained by his mother Carolyn. Taking the second last the young rider looked set for a landmark success but he made a calamitous misjudgement when he mistook the last fence for one that was to be skipped. "I thought it was the water jump. I knew that we had to go around the water jump. It was a silly mistake," he said. Unfortunately for Gorman, he did not realise his mistake and put his head down to drive out the finish. Crossing the line he celebrated standing up in his stirrups before the crushing news was broken to him and his elation turned to devastation. Returning down the horse walk the rider could be seen with his head in his hands. He said: "I've gone fromthe highest point of my life to the lowest in no more than a few seconds. I heard mum shouting and then I was a bit worried." Merry Vic was disqualified leaving Offshore Account the winner, while Gorman was hit with a ban for his indiscretion. Offshore Account's rider Nick Sutton told RUK: "I feel very sorry for the young lad. I guess he won't do it again. That's one of the benefits of having an older jockey. "Quite a long way before the fence I could see him angling out. My worry was that my horse might try to go out with him." ---------------------- BHA The Stewards held an enquiry into whether or not MERRY VIC (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Mr G. Gorman had taken the correct course. They interviewed Mr Gorman. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards found him in breach of Rule (B)59.3.2.3 and guilty of taking the wrong course in that he missed out the last fence when in the lead. They suspended Mr Gorman for 14 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority. The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mr N. Sutton, the rider of the winner, OFFSHORE ACCOUNT (IRE) after the last fence. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had hit his horse when clearly winning. The Stewards suspended Mr Sutton for 2 days on dates to be notified to him by the British Horseracing Authority |

A certain gold cup winning jockey did it last year and denied he had done anything wrong.i lost all respect for the man after that.he was amatuer also.this was a lot more blatant and cost a lot of people a lotta money.he has no where to hide.the water jump at newbury is half the width and size of the last.did he walk the track,did he not watch the other chases earlier.lucky he was riding for his family.career ending if he rode for anyone else.the ban isnt long enough and it only runs if a hunter chase is on the card.can someone clarify the rule for amatuers.is the ban only enforced on days when a hunter chase is on the card.so u could ride away other days.mr.waley cohen could fill us in on that one.
