Only time i ever do them is about 5 mins before the off of the 1st race on a day where there is loads of non runners
get a few favs out the frame and they could pay anything.

Placepot will have you in the funny farm! Did them when I was a youngster. Spent hour on them until I had a draw full of place pots that had five winners. They seamed to be bedeviled by bad luck, Races reduced to less runners fallers bad rides. Over the cause of six races there is always one disaster to do you in. Just to many imponderables to make it a serious betting proposition. Treat them as a fun bet for small stakes and you won't need to seek help after a few years.WinkWinkWinkWink

I always include whatever Richard Hughes is riding mainly because even if first place is beyond him, you can be absolutely certain that he'll be doing his darndest to get second or third (or fourth). I used to back Pat Eddery's mounts for the same reason.

I class it as a great value bet, even though Mr Done takes out 27% of the pot.
All my wins over a £1000 have come from placepots.

I enjoy doing the Placepots, but doing a profit on them would be a lie. The downside is that a non-runner gets all that money on the fav. In this day and age, there must be a way to select your own picks to fill eventual n/r. Too many times have my horse been scratched and you end up with everything riding on a jolly that you don't fancy at all and it does not wipe out many tickets even if it places.

I think it is my favourite type of bet, keeps me interested without betting singles. There is always some sort of angle eg

1. Change in going
2. Course specialists
3. Sound jumpers
4. Trainers in form
5. Trainers not in form (eg JJ O'Neil permanently)
6. Include certain up and coming stables eg, M Keighley, Jo Hughes, N King, etc etc
7. Include trying jockeys like W Carson
8. If there is an odds on fav, if you take it, also include one to come second. Can be quite lucrative.

Placepot hits..
Always put on as late as possible as Brian says when the are a lot of non-runners you are one step ahead of the mugs who are..
The 60% plus of punters who do a straight line.Never EVER do a straight line. You may get a line up (even Agnes Haddock got the Scoop 6)but you will do your conkers in the long run.The way you structure your perm will be up to yourself but remember if you are after the big pots your banker will probably be everyone elses too !! Therefore if it is placed then the dividend will be adjusted accordingly.

I used to go racing fairly regularly years ago with a couple of mates. As well as our own bets, a mate suggested as an alternative we did a pp perm between us with the daily mirror, picking their fancied and strongly fancied selections in each race. It payed up a reasonable no. of times, with many horses we would not have picked. One year, we went up to York and while we did the "mirror pp system", I decided to try the "express system". With 5 mins to the off of the 1st race, a rush job ensued. It copped and I landed an eleven grand placepot for a 30p stake. When I later looked through the races in the Express, I had missed ca 6 fancied or strongly fancied selections from the perm. All 6 of them finished out of the frame.

Have had some decent returns especially when the outsider of 3 or 4 horse races goes in. It can wipe out 80/90% of the pool. Sometimes there are more than one such race so I blindly include all runners.

Another tactic has been big flat meetings where the draw is very important. I have selected the 4 or 5 best drawn horses in big fields. Of course this will push the price of a perm up but often leads to the possibility of a large payout.
