According to Hills they took more individual bets on Kauto than Long Run.
I would imagine most serious punters were thinking alike and gave Kauto no chance so who exactly backed kauto and why was he forced into 3/1 befoe the off.
Was it just a con job by the bookies or is there anybody who actually believed he had a good chance.
The only con was the trainer convincing punters all was well with the horse a la Istabraq, many would have backed him through sentiment a la Istabraq.
I backed him AP and didnt lay off as it was more hope than expectation a la Istabraq.
Both had much in common not least a public following,on both occasions the trainers did the public, racing and the horses a dis-service.

Won't be posting for a good while now while I'm abroad, -----but on this particular subject, let's just say that down here in the West Country for many, it all went very much according to expectations.
You are all intelligent guys, let's just try to guess what the jockey's instructions were !!! ----what should you do if he isn't jumping well ?--what should you do if he isn't going well ? Quite rightly, Kauto's welfare, and the deserved aura around him, was given absolute priority-----------------------------------therefore, a place lay par excellence !--------(ofcourse, if they could have won, they certainly would, but it was always going to be a hundred to one shot that all would go without fault,--- and therefore, we know the rest )

No problem with your summary Rich but the fact is that Joe public never stood a chance and it is only the force of money from them that could have led to his shortening.Swings and roundabouts as no doubt a fair few backed AP,not many intelligent punters would have.
Last years GN was a good example of Joe publics money and then you have the reverse side of the coin with Binocular who was friendless prior to winning the CH.
No personal axe to grind as I had accepted my fate having backed KS before his gallops fall, however the majority of Joe public who backed him on the day trusted the trainer.
Not good.

Jaf------they were right to trust the trainer as far as thinking the horse was sound, and out to win (no dodgy stuff)===========But obviously, given the well publicised incidents leading up to the race, ----the horse was going to be handled like fragile egg in the race,----and therefore it was either a)...a strong win bet, or b).. a strong place lay
Good luck anyway !

Surely if the money for Kauto was from casual racing fans the weight of that money would have been relativly small.
The main bulk professional money would been on Long Run and others

Only 3 horses for money in the race erhab,KS,LR and the winner. As you say most serious money for LR,dont see what others you can say would have attracted serious money from pros or serious punters.
Most serious punters would have laid KS after his fall, not backed him.
Bottom line is,had the trainer made the public aware of his instructions to Ruby..................the horse would have drifted not contracted. The contraction is not in any way similar to someone having a lump on..........it is shop based small punters X however many outlets X internet etc.
Even the small punters would have swerved had they known.

According to the R P , Hills took 50,000 bets on Kauto , 30,000 bets on L Run , doesn't state the total amounts though.
I just find that hard to swallow sounds like BS to me , think Kauto was artificially shortened in order to get more mug money. Just my thought.
It did occur to me before the race that they might do a " Istabraaq ". Missed place lay opprtunity by me.
