Bigger fields could cause a problem but no colour mix up....not the worst out there but lack of breathing could cause an issue come 3miles in deep ground
Report holywell February 23, 2012 2:14 PM GMT
Matt's doing fine.

"In the beige colours..." What, of yellow and white?
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 2:15 PM GMT
That's the first time I've caught one of his commentaries.I know it's not as an easy job but he is bloody awful. It might as well be Alan Partridge calling them home.

seemed to call the winner 2 furlongs out not sure he knew where finish line was, will get caught out if he starts trying to be too clever ,hope he does not become joke as like him when talking in studio.
Report duffy February 23, 2012 2:19 PM GMT
i would pay good money to hear him commentate on the arkle.....he would without doubt spontaneously combust as they cross the line.
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 2:20 PM GMT
The thing I Noticed is that he's trying to fit to many things in to his commentary.A ship without a rudder springs to mind.
Report Rollo Tomasi February 23, 2012 2:20 PM GMT
He's making it look easy, he should try it blindfolded.
Report roo February 23, 2012 2:21 PM GMT
Hes trying to comentate and play in running by the sounds of him, muted.
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 2:24 PM GMT
The Late Great Professor Stanley Unwin would be better then Chapman.
Report lagmorian February 23, 2012 2:24 PM GMT
excellent presenter, bloody awful commentator Laugh
Report mn6mpc February 23, 2012 2:28 PM GMT
Dear racecourses, please no more Matt Chapman commentaries - absolutely shocking.  I can't cope with any more of it.  He's not bad in the booth, but he is a truly horrendous race commentator.  Worst I've heard in a long time.
Report MJK February 23, 2012 2:32 PM GMT
Replacing idiot commentators with idiot commentators. The Geordie should stick to his little booth commentating on virtual racing, 'Joseph Lister appears to have them all covered'Laugh
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 2:35 PM GMT
could you imagine in your worst nightmares if there was 4 meetings on one afternoon and the commentators where Matt Chapman,Aussie Jim,Derek Thompson and Lee McKenzie.Just the thought of that scenario makes me shudder!!!!
Report duffy February 23, 2012 2:43 PM GMT
fook me!!!!!
Report OVERSEAS February 23, 2012 2:44 PM GMT
going from not the worst to absolutely shocking....be lucky to finish the meeting at this rate..
Report geoff m February 23, 2012 2:45 PM GMT
have to agree in the booth fine.
In the commentating seat its truly painfull.
Report MJK February 23, 2012 2:46 PM GMT
Sad thing about Chapman is, that just as he wants people to talk about him when he's in the booth whether it's good or bad, as long as people criticise his awful commentaries he'll continue to annoy on purpose. A sad individual.
Report geoff m February 23, 2012 2:48 PM GMT
well if he continues hes going to be out of a job.
Quite willing to raise a petition to stop this fookin dreadfull nonsense.
Deep down I think hes up to the job
Just a case of whether his ego lets him
Report duffy February 23, 2012 2:48 PM GMT
the problem is...he's an ego maniac and doesn't realize he is supposed to be providing a service to the viewer in a sensible manner....in his eyes he's been given a stage to indulge himself with and by god is he making full use of it.
Report howard February 23, 2012 2:48 PM GMT
Not so sad when he counts his wages though.Grin
Report roo February 23, 2012 2:50 PM GMT
GG was a brilliant commentator for about 15 yrs, he just went in his last 4 or 5 yrs, some of these will never get within 100 mile of his standard
Report MJK February 23, 2012 2:52 PM GMT
Duffy good point. He reminds me of the blokes in the bookies over the audio who won't shut up, thinking that people go in just to listen to them.
Report thederby February 23, 2012 2:54 PM GMT
Just wondered what "The Voice" Sir Peter O' Sullevan makes of it! bet he uses mute button.
Report .birkdale February 23, 2012 2:56 PM GMT
He just needs to calm down a bit.

The 3.40 at Southwell is a 2 mile race and at the rate he's going he'll just wear himself into the ground before the end of it.
Report geoff m February 23, 2012 3:12 PM GMT
hes started well lets just hope he doesnt "blow up"
Report geoff m February 23, 2012 3:13 PM GMT
It can be done!
Report duncrievie February 23, 2012 3:16 PM GMT
He's like a kid on Christmas morning........too excited, screaming and in need a oxygen!!!........Calm down and just commentate!
Report howard February 23, 2012 3:18 PM GMT
Though he needs to tone it down he is already preferable to a few others.
Report duffy February 23, 2012 3:21 PM GMT
the thing is....all this over excitement has been achieved on the back of all weather dross....imagine what he will be like with better quality racing.!!
Report Slippy Blue February 23, 2012 3:28 PM GMT
It's a bad thing for racing that he is commentating on course. I could honestly see it getting to the point where people were not attending tracks if they know he is the race caller.

I felt the same about Derek Thompson and if Chapman doesn't wise up he'll be lampooned in the same wasy as Thompson is and that would be a great shame as I actually don't mind the bloke in his booth but he should not allowed to commentate and I mean that in a constructive critism way not just having a pop.
Report PommyT1215 February 23, 2012 3:37 PM GMT
I dont quite understand what all the fuss is about.

He makes it sound exciting. What's actually wrong with that?

If you suggest that punters will stop going to the course if he is calling then that says more about them more than anything else.

Personally, I think it's refreshing that he calls the race in a way in which punters can relate to.
Report MJK February 23, 2012 3:45 PM GMT
'Joe Fanning's been under pressure for a long way'. He was just niggling the horse along ffsLaugh
Report .birkdale February 23, 2012 3:45 PM GMT
Think he's reading the forum !

Definitely commentated the 3.40 at a much slower pace.
Report comicbookguy February 23, 2012 3:46 PM GMT
Joe FFFFFFFFANNING soory could not help laughing at that one. Might get used to his style in time.
Report duffy February 23, 2012 3:46 PM GMT
matt reads the forum......he'll be good at it as long as he keeps the excitement in check a bit....nothing wrong with it when its really due.
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 4:47 PM GMT
A HA  knowing me Matt Chapman Knowing you the punter  A HA
Report colonel mossy February 23, 2012 5:08 PM GMT
When he is the presenter and there is no commentary from a course every so often he as done the commentary from the studio. That is just what is last effort sounded like to me.
