I like him too, improved a great deal in the last 5 years.

If you swapped Tippy Tappy Hughes and Hanagan's rides last year, Hanagan would have won the title by 70+. Enough said. He's weaker than p$$$

Hughes almost brought the Abdullah operation to it's knees when retained jockey. Classic wins dried up, Group 1s dried up. As soon as he got the boot, Abdullah horses started winning big races all over the globe again. When Pat Eddery was retained by Abdullah and had first choice from a moderate sized Hannon stable, he mopped up jockey titles every year. Nobody could get a look in. These days, Hannon has twice as many horses with big owners behind him and Hughes can't bring them home. When Hannon was training for tinpot car salesmen etc in the 80s, he had Tirol and Don't Forget Me win English classics. Wake up you fools, look at the facts!!

In 2008 he finished 2nd in the title race riding 117 winners (15% strike rate) and winning over 2 million pounds in prize money.
In 2009 he finished 2nd in the title race riding 130 winners (18% strike rate) and winning over 2 million pounds in prize money. In 2010 he finished 2nd in the title race riding 189 winners (18% strike rate) and winning over 3 million pounds in prize money. In 2011 he finished 4th in the title race riding 130 winners (18% strike rate)and winning over 2 and a 1/2 million pounds in prize money. Those statistics do not tell the tale of an overrated jockey. |

Nellers, which of the Abdullah horses should he have won classic(s) / Group 1(s)on, iyo?
|
|
By:
He's finished in the top 4 of the title race 8 times in the last 10 years.
Perhaps that 4 year sample doesn't quite do him justice. |

have you guys seen the Indian race the chap is talking about above?
just self defence from Hughes. only protecting himself from some seriously dangerous riding. |
|
By:
Inaccurate, meaningless, irrational and largely irrelevant judgement of a really rather good jockey, by a belligerant ignoramus trying to be provocative.
Nothing to see or learn here, move on to better pastures. |

Ibrahima Sonko's got it right in that he has made huge improvement over the last five years.
I was a big critic of Hughes a few seasons ago and I was right to be. However, he has since proved me wrong, and he is a class act these days. I only found out about 18 months ago from an interview on ATR (so it's no big secret) that he had a drinking problem. It was so obvious through his riding that he addressed it, and that helps with confidence regarding the daily grind at small meetings. I think the OP is probably still smarting from Hughes' portfolio of inept rides a long time ago, just as I was. I just completely ignored ALL his mounts so it wouldn't keep hurting. |

H, thanks for the PM about a could be
I was in deep sh1t when you posted that one Having sat on a 1000 profit I added 2000 to it and went big, dont get me wrong H, I like most of us can't afford to throw it away - To cut a long story short, I lost plenty rapidly and almost self ignited I posted here that I was getting out, having given it much thought I had a go at the USA racing and it got worse - I am not sure how i have managad this but I am now on 2K bank balance, balance 2 nights ago was 1650 and I was well p1ssed off So H here I am now at evens with Betfair after many years and still angry at blowing my 1K profit Onwards and upwards all being well - How are you doing? |

My take on his strengths and weaknesses:
Brilliant timing, balance and judge of pace. Eeks out extra when challenged, knows what he's under and can ride from the front or the back. On the down side, he has an unfortunate habit of waiting for a gap to appear instead of switching or forcing (yes ok maybe sometimes you will get a ban) and is something of a nightmare for place backers. Still think overall he's top class when he wants to be and has the temperament that not many do for big race riding. |

Very good.I'll add Steve Cauthen,Lester Piggott. Might as well the way this threads going. |
|
By:
Don't think inono has a serious contribution to this thread, he is trying to communicate with the other side.

hughes was riding at all the big meetings down south while hanagan was picking up tin pot races up north.
he could still have been champion jockey if the northern stewards hadn't helped hanagan. |

Steve Cauthen, press hype, at borring time. his agent was a press man, and there were one or two other with similar hype, but Cauthen would have been a fair bit better, JR had a pressboy (had a pen name, Poision Pen, can remember his name) as an agent, would write something nice about him, even said to a pressman who was suppose to do the write up at Bath, i'll do that if you want to get away, Give JR a the usual headline for winning a seller, mind you he had had a bad time off it, not rode a winner for two weeks, sence he walked past the clerk of the scales, TWICE at Salisbury,on two winners, lost both races, had his head stuck up his a$$ reading his write ups, written by his agent, and he beleave it all.
