It would be nice if they could forget all the outside involvement (tv, corporate,etc)and run the meeting on monday. Owners,trainers,jockeys and real national hunt fans would be more than happy.

indeed rocky i remember when warwick had a fantastic midweek jumps fixture,in fact one season the novice hurdle was won by rebel song and the novice chase won by the west awake,those two horses a month later won both the sun alliance races at the festival,newbury did once run the bula hurdle on a wednesday the race was won by valeramix.

sonko that would cause jockey problems,and would stop the proper nh fans of been able to go to both.

ascot used to hold quality midweek nh cards on a regular basis.

most of them, did rocky,alderbrook won his champion hurdle trial at wincanton on a thursday in the kingwell hurdle,the jim ford chase was also ran on the same day in those days,huntingdon still has the sidney banks on a thursday and kelso still hold the morebattle midweek,seems like all the others have gone to weekends now,shame really.

wincanton also had some great thursday fixtures jim ford/kingwell day used to be one of the best days out of the year

great minds think alike jimnast dont forget exeter have kept haldon gold cup day on a tuesday

Peterborough Chase and Haldon Gold Cup are still midweek. As is the "Cheltenham Festival"

good morning tonic,the day see you them limped out of racing in the kingwell hurdle,the two best staying chaser of the time kildimo beat desert orchid that off course was a thursday,i wasnt going to wincanton in those days but i would guess the crowds were bigger then than they are now its ran on a saturday.

in the case of huntingdon the peterborough chase didnt work on a saturday.

the ones i miss from a personnal point of view are the midweek haydocks in november and december at haydock ,every year we would see the likes of silver buck and wayward lad,and later suny bay make the seasonal debuts there.a few drinks after racing in the old bars there then a taxi back to manchester,happy days

Yeah Haydock for me too, really miss the midweek jumps quality there.

another favourite used to be national spirit day on a monday at fontwell remember the place being absolutely packed when baracouda turned up

thats my favorite course your talking about there tonic,the 1989 winner went on to win the champion hurdle.

used to be a cracking race but like everything at fontwell now it isnt what it used to be unfortunately

Just dug out some old racecards...first Haydock one I looked at, Nov 18th 1998, the Edward Hanmer. See More Business, Suny Bay, Escartefigue etc. Remember the water jump being frozen over some days, but the racing still on.

still love the place tonic,cue card won the festival bumper after winning at fontwell,my way de solzen a few years ago,
always get a thrill at fontwell.

sunday should be the new favourite now that the weather forecasters are saying it will turn much milder by saturday and most of the snow should have gone by then.

couple of overlapping topics here - firstly it would be great if some of the 'top' courses reinstated their midweek fixtures, i don't have any evidence if the crowds for these fixtures on weekends are significantly higher than when midweek but from a sponsorship point of view i'm none the wiser who or what kingwell and jim ford are...secondly the top jumpers of the past had many more runs leading up to cheltenham than they do now - i wish someone could release the figures for chasers/hurdlers rated say 150+ as to how many runs they would have in the 80s as against now...considering that the training standards/facilities have apparently improved it's pretty surprising that most of the top horses don't get more than 3-4 runs per season...lastly i think the bha/sponsors should look at incentivising pre-festival runs for the top horses, and this could be linked to first point...for newbury i remember the friday before the hennessey used to be a good meeting so perhaps next friday would be good and would not interfere with the existing saturday cards...for now roll on musselburgh!!

Got the previous year Edward Hanmer too(1997) Jimnast. Top 4 were Unguided Missile, See More Business, Suny Bay and Go Ballistic. Earth Summit also there on 10-5.

gordon the friday before the hennersy is still a good meeting,regarding the good horse of yesteryear having more runs that was not always the case,dawn run had only ran in one chase before winning the gold cup,in mr mulligans year he had ,had only 2 runs prior to cheltenham,alderbrook,see you then and royal gait were all lightly raced when they were winning champion hurdles,

outpost around 50 % of the newbury crowd are welsh,try and get a welshman away from the rugby.

insanity no chance we will ever get a turn out at haydock like that again ,midweek or weekends,i know we have the betfair chase but that doesnt have the depth of the race you just posted.

jimnast - didn't the 3m hurdle used to be run on the friday and won by deanos beano a couple of times? and newbury got the fred rimell novice chase which used to be midweek at worcester..there are always one or two exceptions (see you then most notably) but for every see you then there used to be a make a stand (7 runs that season before champ hurdle),beech road (6 runs) and morley street (6 runs) etc etc

That Ascot card on the Wednesday of this week which used to feature the Reynoldstown was another good day that has been subsumed into the Saturdays-are-everything culture.

wasn't it the best mate stable who started the trend of only running horses a few times a season.

Remember Dessie getting beat at Ascot on a Wednesday. Unseated rider in a three horse race at 4/11 IIRC.

both wrong here gordon fred rimell still ran at worcester we are thinking of the worcester chase now run at newbury,won by grand crus this season.

remember a Wed' at Ascot when Royal Athlete won. Always liked Carrick Hill Lad but his jumping was very poor that day.

ascot use to race on the wednesday after the national,that was the last day scu rode.

this sundays exeter card saw noland win the novice hudle a few years ago and last season saw spirit son win the same race,this years race could well produce a big festival hope.

mr mulligan won it in his novice season before running 2nd in the sun all chase,i am pretty sure little owl won it many years ago,cant remember when it switched to a saturday although i am pretty sure when our vic won it ,it was on a saturday.

Newbury Racecourse has announced the abandonment of racing ahead of tomorrow’s fixture, Betfair Super Saturday.

With overnight snowfall and temperatures predicted to fall to -7C this evening, following an inspection of the racecourse this morning by the racecourse management the decision was made to abandon the fixture.

Following the announcement, Newbury Racecourse, The BHA, The Levy Board will enter into discussions on the possibility of the re-staging of some races. 

Stephen Higgins, Managing Director, Racing and Events commented “Following significant snowfall on Thursday night, and following an inspection of the course this morning and with temperatures predicted to plummet this evening the decision has been made to abandon tomorrows fixture.  This is an important fixture in the racing calendar and we will be entering into talks with the BHA, The Levy Board and Betfair on the POSSIBLE re-staging of SOME of the races”.

you are correct jimnast our vic's race was run on a saturday in 2004 I beleive.

norn iron that was my origanal 2nd fav,but for that to happen i think they would already have had to have the decs in,also even sunday i think the weather was only a possible.

The horse duncan remembers was bolands cross owned by sheikh ali abu khamsin trained by nick gaselee and ridden by richard linley.

oregon trail won the 1986 arkle.

i remember bolands cross winning a 3 runner race at wincanton in 87 or 88.

sheikh ali abu khamsin,now there's a blast from the past.

come to think of it he didnt win he was 2nd of 3 behind the 88 gold cup runner up cavvies clown.

rocky gaye brief and half free were both his aswell,richard linnley was the contracted jockey.

The Sheikh was a regular at Kempton (He had box A on the first floor of the paddock suite when I started work there in 1985)

not to forget fifty dollars more.

i dont think in the end bolands cross achieved much,he ended up running in handicaps at the festival just a horse who once promised plenty.

Remember it well.  Oregon Trail beat Desert Orchid in the Arkle!  Pearlyman was the winner of the three horse race where Dessie unseated.  He dodged the Arkle and lumped a big weight to victory in the Grand Annual instead.  Returned the next 2 years to win the Champion Chase.

"Our preferred proposal is to stage a new fixture at Newbury on Friday featuring the key races with some action covered live on C4."

"Funding of such a fixture is dependent on some races being broadcast on terrestrial TV. We are liaising with C4 to see if this is possible."

If you guys are wondering what that chase was called at Ascot AFTER Cheltenham and before Aintree, I think that may have been the Thunder & Lightning Novices Chase, and the Peregrine was run on the same card I think, in the good old days - I ain't got a clue if they're still on nowadays as they seem to change the names of these races for fun!
