An inquest into the death of Wales football manager will be opened at the coroner's court in Warrington on Tuesday

Helen Carter
guardian.co.uk,

An inquest will open on Tuesday into the death of the Wales football manager Gary Speed at his home in Cheshire.

A spokeswoman for the coroner, Nicholas Rheinberg, confirmed her office had been informed of the death by police. The inquest will be opened at the coroner's court at Warrington town hall before a full hearing takes place at a later date.

Speed, 42, was found by his wife, Louise, in the garage of their home in the village of Huntington, near Chester, shortly after 7am on Sunday. Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious. The couple lived in Huntington with their two teenage sons, and Speed was said to have been a devoted family man.

At a later date, the coroner will establish the cause of death. It has been widely reported that Speed took his own life, but this has yet to be confirmed officially.

A Cheshire police spokeswoman said: "Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time."

The previous day, Speed had appeared on BBC1's Football Focus programme talking enthusiastically about his team's improved fortunes and his hopes for success in World Cup qualifying matches in 2012.

Dan Walker, a presenter who spent four hours with him on Saturday, described his friend as "as bubbly as I've known him".

"He was talking about his kids, how they were really coming on and talking about playing golf next week," he said.

"It's awful to think someone who was so gifted and so well liked, with the rest of his life to look forward to, has been cruelly removed. He was in such a good mood about the show and said he'd love to come back before Christmas."

A book of remembrance has been set up in the reception ares of the Football Association of Wales (FAW) headquarters in Cardiff. An area outside has been set aside as a garden of remembrance.

The FAW said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone – especially the media – respects the family's privacy at this very sad time.

"Gary was appointed one year ago and was given the brief to prepare the Wales senior squad for qualification to the Fifa 2014 World Cup in Brazil. During his year in charge, the results and performances in the final European Championship qualifiers and friendly games suggested that there were strong grounds for optimism that the team could challenge for a place in the finals in three years' time."

The FAW praised Speed's exemplary career, describing him as a versatile player who could feature in midfield as well as defence.

In a statement, it said everyone at the FAW admired his passion for the job and "that this tragedy should have taken someone so young and talented is a huge loss not only for his family and friends, but as a nation as a whole".

The chief executive, Jonathan Ford, said he was devastated by the news of the death, adding that his thoughts and prayers were with Speed's wife and family.

Speed's former Newcastle United teammate Shay Given, who attended a charity fundraising event with him in May, broke down in tears on television as a minute's silence was held at the start of Swansea City's match against Aston Villa. Fans joined in a chant of: "There's only one Gary Speed."

At Anfield, Liverpool's Welsh player Craig Bellamy asked not to play against Manchester City after hearing the news of his manager's death. A series of players joined in the tributes on social networking sites.

Speed was awarded an MBE in the 2010 Queen's birthday honours list and retired from playing the same year after winning 85 caps for his country.

He represented Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton Wanderers during his lengthy and successful career. Fans left flowers at the Leeds ground, Elland Road, on Monday.

Speed's parents were from Chester but he was born in the Welsh border town of Mancot and was always proud to represent Wales. His father, Roger Speed, played football for Wrexham before returning to his trade as a joiner.

Flags outside the Welsh assembly in Cardiff were flying at half-mast on Monday.

Manchester United player Michael Owen, who went to the same school as Speed, said he was devastated and that when the news broke, the whole of Cheshire was in "utter shock and disbelief".

A spokesman for Downing Street said: "The prime minister was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Gary Speed, who was greatly respected by football fans across the country both as a player and manager. The prime minister's thoughts are with his family and friends on this very sad day for fans everywhere, especially in Wales."

Plaid Cymru assembly member Bethan Jenkins called on fellow politicians to observe a minute's silence during Tuesday's plenary session.

They need to get a Mr. Monk or Sherlock Holmes on the case. Accepting things as they appear is rather naive.

Not being treated as suspicious is standard line for meaning it was not murder and therefore not the police's responsibilty. The reasons he did it may well be suspicious which will be found out in the inquest.

Gary Speed hadn't argued with his wife and he wasn't depressed: Suicide footballer had a happy marriage, says agent
The Wales manager’s agent and best man Hayden Evans said Speed was ‘happily married’ and that his widow Louise is bewildered by his suspected suicide.
Mr Evans said: ‘They were happily married and anyone who knows them will tell you that. This is why it is a mystery.
‘We genuinely at the moment have no clue whatsoever what has caused it and I have been with the family all day.
‘Everybody is asking the same question and no one has an answer. We are all in shock.’
When asked about the circumstances behind Speed's death and whether the Wales boss had argued with Louise before killing himself, Evans added: 'Louise is saying that's not the case. She just doesn't understand it.'

When asked if 42-year-old Speed had suffered bouts of depression, Mr Evans said ‘none whatsoever’.
He added: ‘The one thing the family and me as one of his closest friends would totally refute is that. There was no indication of any problems and never has been’.
Speed appeared happy as he left the BBC studios in Salford on Saturday afternoon after filming Football Focus. His wife found him hanged in the garage of their £1.5million mansion near Chester just after 7am on Sunday.

Footballer Joey Barton was at the centre of controversy today over comments he made on Twitter about the death of Gary Speed, describing suicide as a 'selfish' act.

Despite an outcry from other users on the social networking site, the QPR captain has refused to apologise for his 'insensitive' comments.
Welsh football legend Gary Speed was tragically found hanged at his home on Sunday morning in what is thought to have been suicide.
Like countless others, Barton took to Twitter to speak of his shock at Speed's death and to pay tribute to him.

He posted: 'Just hearing about Gary Speed, to say am shocked is an understatement.
'My thoughts are with his family and friends. Really sad news.'
However, his tributes were then swiftly followed - with astonishingly tactless timing - by his views on suicide.
The outspoken footballer added: 'Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there.'
As Twitter users bombarded Barton in an online backlash, the star - unrepentant - branded his critics as having 'half a brain' instead of apologising for his offensive comments.
He added: 'Feedback on here, small minority as usual strongly disagree with what I said. If they read carefully or had half a brain, they'd understand.'

Last night his comments were criticised by football fans and suicide counselling groups, with Malcolm Clarke - chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation - telling the Daily Star: 'This is completely insensitive and inappropriate.
'It is disrespectful to Gary's family. We should be concentrating on the positive impact he made on the game at a time like this.'
Meanwhile counsellor Beth Neil, from the Welsh branch of Survivors of Bereavement By Suicide, added: 'He has no idea what kind of trauma Gary was going through. This is just sick.'

Many Twitter users also rounded on Barton. One user, Leazeslad, said: If anyone is in any doubt about what a p**** Joey Barton is, read his tweet about selfishness and suicide, on this day of all days.'

Wales manager Gary Speed's body was found by his wife Louise, an inquest has revealed.

The Wales football manager's inquest was opened and adjourned, after a coroner confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

A full hearing will take place at Warrington Coroner's Court at a later date.

It comes after friends rebuffed speculation about his private life, which had been prompted by the 42-year-old's apparent suicide

I've already commented on another thread re this matter, and if there's one thing in life I've learned, is not to pre-judge.

The one thing that does puzzle me is this....‘happily married’ and that his widow Louise is bewildered by his suspected suicide.

I can only speak from a personal point of view, but if I found mrs stew hanged in my home, I wouldn't be bewildered, I'd be devastated and still under sedation.

That's not to say anything dodgy was going on, because as I pointed out before, most people who take their lives, usually appear very happy beforehand, due, apparently, to the fact it will soon be all over. (whatever the suffering is)

something led to this tragedy, and the public have a right to know, to change the current beliefs and philosophies of the world today e.g if you cheat on your wife you are scum, and a social outcast, or other behaviours which the public consider disgusting. Instead of castigating people like Tiger Woods, Ryan Giggs etc in the media, and we all make fun of them as they are public figures, the media need to understand the damage they are doing and that these people need help, guidance, whatever. mine is to introduce another dimension, the above should not be viewed disrespectfully, I'm genuinely sorry about the fate of gary speed but from experience of newspaper 'conferences' when editors and associates hammer out 'what's new' and pool ideas for forthcoming publications I'm thinking way beyond the ordinary, genuine person in the street.
