had a big string in the late 80s around 70-80 horses,all of a sudden had dropped to 20/30 for some reason.

I remember a horse called Let Me Play of Norton's that ran in the last race on the card at Chester one day. The horse stumbled badly on the turn-in and unseated its jockey. As we left to go home, I saw the lad walking down the middle of the course with a lead rope to retrieve his horse who was being held by someone. He got to about the furlong pole and saw that the horse's foot was hanging off, and turned on his heel and walked back in tears. I almost cried with him. One of the saddest things I've seen on a racecourse - the horse's name seemed to make it all the worse somehow.

Timeless, Leysh was the one that won the Cambridgeshire (at 33/1) under John Lowe with the more fancied stablemate Morwray Boy ridden by Tyrone Williams second at 11/1. I will never forget, because I did the forecast, as well as backing them both. 1984 it was.

I have Steve Norton listed with just 4 horses in 1966.

In 1968 he had increased to 16 - mostly Jumpers.

By 1971 he had 46 - and was training at Silkstone.

Jockeys: Steve Natriss(NH) - Apprentices: M Wood (7st) Steve Goulding (6st 7lb)

Nothing of serious note, though - and I cannot see any owners who may have 'bankrolled' him - leading me to think that he did it on his own.

The infamous Ken Richardson was one of his owners, though.

In 1982 he had 55 horses listed - 25 of whom were 2-yr-olds, including Goodbye Shelley and Parissaul... the 2-yr-0lds no doubt arriving on the strength of Full Extent's exploits as a juvenile, the year before.

Stable jockey: John Lowe (7st 8lb)

Amongst the owners were the Brooks - with Sandy Brook being bis Lady Rider.

He went on to have an even stronger team in the rest of the 1980s -

I well remember reading in the Life, at the time (Alastair, I think) - that 'he had never seen so many  blank faces in a winner's enclosure' - and that 'perhaps the wrong one had won'.

It was Sandy brooks who bankrolled Steve (knocker) Norton
One of his better horses was Laser Lady. Steve was a good

Onlooker, In the 1970s I backed a horse called Vulwell, trained by Norton he won a Selling Hurdle at Catterick or Wetherby at odds of 33/1. Do you have any details of this please?

Didn't he have a good novice hurdler called Nerak? I think it won the Victor Ludorum at Haydock.

Vulwell was a vulgan mare. It was at Teeside when it won at 33/1
I can remember asking Leslie Steele for a 5000 to 100 and he took
it with a smile on his face as I reminded him that after it had finished it's previous race well beaten, it pulled up abruptly just after the winning line and started to have pick of grass.

I had only backed it because knockers had told me it had never worked
better. Les was steaming and still moaned about it for years after

goodbye shelley won the prix marcel boussac at longchamp paid around 37/1 on the PMU ,it was on the day ardross got beat in a photo in the arc (possibly 1982 )

I rode a horse for him at Redcar once. Around 1977/78 I think. He said to me "Don't be afraid to give him a smack". I'd have been done under the current rules.

As mentioned Nerak was a good juvenile hurdler he trained. Steve died young many years ago.

Ran just 7 times in the following season - 1975/76 - in either Opportunity (Conditionals, nowadays) Handicap Hurdles, or Selling Handicap Hurdles.

It did nothing - other than WIN a Selling Handicap Hurdle - as posted above - on Friday February 27th 1976 - on Firm ground.

Carrying a 7lb penalty, and again ridden by 5lb claimer G Graham.
Started at 11/1(opened 8s)
  (hit 6th, soon ridden, tailed off when pulled up)

Looks as if it may, possibly, have sustained a 'career' ending injury.

I was told by a friend that they was going to land a touch with this horse. As time went by nothing was heard from the supposed source and the horse had barely a few races. Some 2 years later I noticed in the Sporting Life that he was running that day and had shown improvement on his previous run, which I had missed. When I spoke to my friend he said he had lost contact with his source and was not bothered about backing it. I just thought it must be worth a few quid each way. My friend has not got over the shock to this day.
