|
By:
High Hoyland, i think he still lives there.
|
By:
Full extent, won the gymcrack at odds of 7-1 I was lucky enough
to have had a £500-70, I think the winning jockey was J Lowe. |
By:
had a big string in the late 80s around 70-80 horses, all of a sudden had dropped to 20/30 for some reason.
used to get some info from the yard manny years ago, silkstone and dardinella lady are two who stick in the mind. |

Goodbye Shelley? - did it win that G1 2yo fillies race over a mile at Longchamp?
Leysh? Had a horse that did well in amateur riders races - Meekah? or something. Won the first at Chester one day. |
By:
so far, only Leysh rings a bell
|
By:
did he train Ubedizzy?
|

I remember a horse called Let Me Play of Norton's that ran in the last race on the card at Chester one day. The horse stumbled badly on the turn-in and unseated its jockey. As we left to go home, I saw the lad walking down the middle of the course with a lead rope to retrieve his horse who was being held by someone. He got to about the furlong pole and saw that the horse's foot was hanging off, and turned on his heel and walked back in tears. I almost cried with him. One of the saddest things I've seen on a racecourse - the horse's name seemed to make it all the worse somehow.

By:
it's horrible when we see it on the telly so it must be devastating for those who care for them day in day out

Mr Confusion
Angel something |
By:
Myra Nesbitt was Ubedizzy.
|
By:
bloody hell,
how could I forget Mr Confusion, the most ridiculous disqualification ever, after Royal Gait of course ! |
By:
High Estates, think was listed class i 80's
|

Timeless, Leysh was the one that won the Cambridgeshire (at 33/1) under John Lowe with the more fancied stablemate Morwray Boy ridden by Tyrone Williams second at 11/1. I will never forget, because I did the forecast, as well as backing them both. 1984 it was.

LOL, nice one for remembering,
I wonder who trained Tobermory Boy/Lad |
By:
I have Steve Norton listed with just 4 horses in 1966.
In 1968 he had increased to 16 - mostly Jumpers. By 1971 he had 46 - and was training at Silkstone. Jockeys: Steve Natriss(NH) - Apprentices: M Wood (7st) Steve Goulding (6st 7lb) Nothing of serious note, though - and I cannot see any owners who may have 'bankrolled' him - leading me to think that he did it on his own. The infamous Ken Richardson was one of his owners, though. In 1982 he had 55 horses listed - 25 of whom were 2-yr-olds, including Goodbye Shelley and Parissaul... the 2-yr-0lds no doubt arriving on the strength of Full Extent's exploits as a juvenile, the year before. Stable jockey: John Lowe (7st 8lb) Amongst the owners were the Brooks - with Sandy Brook being bis Lady Rider. He went on to have an even stronger team in the rest of the 1980s - Re: the Cambridgeshire, when he had 1st and 2nd - I well remember reading in the Life, at the time (Alastair, I think) - that 'he had never seen so many blank faces in a winner's enclosure' - and that 'perhaps the wrong one had won'. |
By:
It was Sandy brooks who bankrolled Steve (knocker) Norton
One of his better horses was Laser Lady. Steve was a good judge but unfortunately the drink got the better of him |
By:
nice research onlooker,
and I remember that quote too ! |
By:
Ollie Pears who now trains was apprentice rider there for quite some time.
Tobermorry Boy was trained by Whitaker |
By:
The winner was Leysh and I'm not sure about the second but it could have been something like Melton Mowbray.
Leysh definitely was the winner...I backed it at 33/1! |

you've done well not to read thru the thread.
|

I missed Prince Rupert's post!
|
By:
Tobermoray Boy ended up with Jack Hardy, as an 8 year old, after Whittaker.

Onlooker, In the 1970s I backed a horse called Vulwell, trained by Norton he won a Selling Hurdle at Catterick or Wetherby at odds of 33/1. Do you have any details of this please?
|
By:
Didn't he have a good novice hurdler called Nerak? I think it won the Victor Ludorum at Haydock.
|
By:
I will find it, sparrow.
It does ring a bit of a bell - bet is was a Vulgan offspring. Off out for my Friday night pint(s) now - So please look in again tomorrow. |
By:
Feck me onlooker - it's 23:14 and you're off out for a pint! Must be blood lust imo.
|
By:
Vulwell was a vulgan mare. It was at Teeside when it won at 33/1
I can remember asking Leslie Steele for a 5000 to 100 and he took it with a smile on his face as I reminded him that after it had finished it's previous race well beaten, it pulled up abruptly just after the winning line and started to have pick of grass. I had only backed it because knockers had told me it had never worked better. Les was steaming and still moaned about it for years after |
By:
goodbye shelley won the prix marcel boussac at longchamp paid around 37/1 on the PMU ,it was on the day ardross got beat in a photo in the arc (possibly 1982 )
|
By:
I rode a horse for him at Redcar once. Around 1977/78 I think. He said to me "Don't be afraid to give him a smack". I'd have been done under the current rules.
As mentioned Nerak was a good juvenile hurdler he trained. Steve died young many years ago. |

Court Harwell
Harwell East Africa VULWELL Vulgan Killeany Castle Manzanillo Appeared to have a short career ... Ran 4 times unplaced as a 4-yr-old over Hurdles, for Steve Norton Ran just 7 times in the following season - 1975/76 - in either Opportunity (Conditionals, nowadays) Handicap Hurdles, or Selling Handicap Hurdles. It did nothing - other than WIN a Selling Handicap Hurdle - as posted above - on Friday February 27th 1976 - on Firm ground. 2-15 Lord Lovetin Handicap Hurdle (Selling) 2m 5f. 1. VULWELL(bl) - 6-9-9 G Graham*5 (hdway 6th. led 3 out, ridden, ran on well) 2. Sweet Dough - 4-10-8 Tommy Stack 3. Viaduct - 7-10-13 Joe Crowley 18 ran Dist: One length, 4l, 8l SP: 33/1(50s), 8/1, 11/4(op 7/2,tchd 11/2) No bid owner: M Ramsden ---------------- Vulwell ran just once more ... on March 2nd - at Doncaster - in a Selling Handicap Hurdle. Carrying a 7lb penalty, and again ridden by 5lb claimer G Graham. Started at 11/1(opened 8s) (hit 6th, soon ridden, tailed off when pulled up) Looks as if it may, possibly, have sustained a 'career' ending injury. |

Thank you very much for that, onlooker.
I was told by a friend that they was going to land a touch with this horse. As time went by nothing was heard from the supposed source and the horse had barely a few races. Some 2 years later I noticed in the Sporting Life that he was running that day and had shown improvement on his previous run, which I had missed. When I spoke to my friend he said he had lost contact with his source and was not bothered about backing it. I just thought it must be worth a few quid each way. My friend has not got over the shock to this day. |
By:
thanks all, I didn't know he'd passed on,
rip. |

RIP Steve
