hi guys, i am new here and this is my first post but wanted a few opinions on the last race at chapstow. i had a good bet on over 46 at chepstow and was expecting plenty of rain but it only came at the death.
anyhow needed 19 length from the last race and was absolutely convinced i had got it when they crossed the line, but to my amazement the judge gave 14!!!!
i have looked back over last few days and at stratford on saturday horse won by 13 length, from first to second there was 2 seconds between them.
the last race at chepstow was 4 seconds between first and second and only 14 lengths gid, really cant understand it.
in the past they have changed it when they got it wrong but not this time.
yes he did but i have timed from 1st to 2nd and its just under 4 seconds in pretty soft going. stratford spot on 2 secs and 13 length on saturday.
the commentators words were "hes gone that far clear they wont be able to see him, hes won by the proverbial mile"
i dont mind losing fairly but this is ridicoulus, i have had the odd bad call and accepted because slight mistakes do happen but thats not a 14 length winner. its closer to 24.
what was your original thought when you watched it?

Never bet distances today but I often do so I know where your thoughts.
I heard him say what you say as well mate - 14 does sound pretty short when I think about it.
Gonna have a look at it now as well

The usual standard used is 5 lengths per second. I don't know if they adjust for the going etc. Anyway I timed it at 3.6 secs which at 5 per sec. gives 18. So close! Can't be 13 though, that would mean only 2.6 secs.

have watched it and imo there is no way on gods earth that the winning distance is only fourteen lengths it looks to my educated and informed eyes nearer 20 !!!

your spot on dave, if it was the 1st race i reckon the judge would have changed it over the course of the afternoon but with it being the last race hes just rushed into a stupid decision and got his sen off home before rush hour traffic.
iv'e sent an email to chepstow racecourse but not sure where i am going to go from here, really cant see it being changed a day later after all the bookmakers have paid out.
its just really frustrating when you know your bet has won and then somebody makes a mistake and it costs me a lot of money

Nearer 20 - unlucky mate, can't see the clowns changing their decision but I guess you got to go down fighting, so get in to their ribs - email them all and copy your bookmaker in , at least make them squirm for costing you your winnings !! Best of luck - hope you get it.

well i have contacted attheraces, chepstow racecourse, william hill and the racing post. not sure what good it will do if any but i feel i have to try make them realise its wrong what they have done, maybe next time they wont make the same mistake again? not much of a consolation i know but its better than nothing if they hear my voice.

what was official going for the last race if it had changed to soft they work on 4 lengths per second therefore 3.6 secs equals 14.4 lengths and so is rounded to the nearest number ie 14

The formula for working out winning distances is obviously dubious as it is based on when the horses crossed the winning line and not on the distance between the horses when the first one crosses tge line
The winner may have been 25 lengths ahead when it crossed the line itself, but because slowing down rapidly and the second being ridden out, the time between them across the line resulted in much smaller "winning distance" as per the formula.
The Stratford race sounds odd if you say there was only 2 seconds between them and distance given as 13 lengths, This should not be possible.

seriously? distance betting is the only thing i do and if thats 14 length then dont think i can really carry on with it.
everyone in the local office say it was 20 plus.

theres only one best tonic is spot on here, the going was changed to soft before the race therefore 4 lengths per second is used.
They might have given it 15lengths at best but sadly for your bet 19 is never going to happen.
Unfortunately the risk with these bets is horses well clear being eased close home which is what happened in this case. Probably would of won by 20lengths otherwise.
