I've no faith in him as he makes too many mistakes, can't seem to judge the pace of a race either gives them to much to do or goes too early. I think Paul will be on the lookout for another Jockey.

Nicholls uses too many poor jockeys , all these amateurs ?? I guess there must be a method in the great mans madness. He used to put Joe Tizzard up all the time before he became a decent jockey, then Sam Thomas too....

Does the fact that he's 2nd jockey suggest that he's riding 2nd string or 2nd meeting horses and that has something to do with it?

Anything trained by Nicholls tends to go off shorter than its real chance and the horse has run 8 times and gone off favourite for 5 of them and yet only won twice, once at 2/1 2F and 11/10F. It's been beaten at 5/2F, 2/7F, 6/4F and this time at 9/4F and beaten too at 5/2 2F.......maybe it's just not very good.

Daryl Jacob has shown on horses like The listener and Reve de Sivola that he's good enough as long as the horse is too.

DJ is one of the more well rounded jocks out there. Sure he makes mistakes like they all do but riding better than Ruby right now over chases on the whole. I don't watch the hurdle races to comment.

riding  better  than Ruby ??  a  comment  like  that  can  only  be  taken seriously  with  evidence  and  proper  research . I can neither  find  it  nor  see it  . Please gents , we  need  more  evidence  when confronted  by  a  more  controversial comment . Also , the 2nd meeting horses , as mased puts it , are  by definition given its a secondary meeting ,  often facing horses  of lesser ability so I don't feel that  argument  holds  any  water .  Ruby wants  to  ride  the best horses  in the stable at the best  meetings  for the biggest prize money . He also faces the best adversaries . It is not  a measure  of their chance  in any particular  race .  What  I can  see is  illustrated very  well  in Jacob's ride  yesterday in the handicap . He switched the horse inside  and out at  least 3 times . He began his run then stopped it  and waited . The horse hit at least  2 hurdles and bumped sharply  into  another  horse causing imbalance  for a few strides . I  am not saying the horses very ordinary jumping was  his  fault  necessarily . I am saying  he could  have contributed .

Considering the hoss you are talking about is due a fencing campaign, it jumped like a drunk yesterday..
Report racingguru • October 26, 2011 11:24 AM BST
Pablo - jockeys all make mistakes. Look at Rubys ride on Gansey saturday. One could say too wide, too far back. Never gave it a chance.

Hard to judge jockeys on a small sample size but watch all chases in detail and whilst acknowledging Ruby is a great horseman he just rides them too wide for me. Maybe his geometry is not so good or he's lost his bottle to go up the inside. Either way over fences he's riding too many bad(ish) races for a top flight jock IMO. Don't get me wrong Ruby has given the most perfect rides of all time for me His ride on Poquelin in the 09 B0ylesports was just about the most perfect ride any jockey could ever give. But given his ability for me he is taking the "safe" route too often.

As for Jacob he's a great horseman too. To settle Tataniano like that in front takes good hands and he got it jumping in good rhythm. Another case where a horse improves for Jacob is Douryna. Just check out his form and more importantly how much better he jumped for Jacob than any of his other riders. The guy is good simple as. I reserve my comment for chases as don't watch hurdles.
Report ima_mazed66 • October 26, 2011 11:26 AM BST
Yes the Nicholls second meeting horses are facing poorer opponents but the thing is they are also poor horses themselves anyway and most of the field are much of a muchness and anything can win. You can maybe even argue that if the majority of trainers in those second meetings are small trainers that can give their horse far more attention and focus than a lesser light at a big stable will get.

I can't really see as much going into a Nicholls runner in a lowly hurdle compared to some of their big runners going elsewhere. You can also argue too that in many of the big races bar the festivals, that there are only a handful of horses at the most with a reasonable chance of winning, as some are just there to make up the numbers and other trainers can tend to avoid big name rivals until they have to meet them later on in the season.

The horse yesterday clearly isn't one of Nicholls's better ones after taking five attempts to win its maiden hurdle at Newton Abbott and did it really deserve to go off 9/4F on the strength of that?

2 better more  succinct replies from guru and mazed..thankyou...........guru  , i  do  remember the ride on poquelin ....masterful indeed. More currently  , the  ride  that Ruby  gave the often sulking De Valera last  week  in Ireland to  beat a Russell ridden o'leary  owned  odds on  fav  was  superb...he  cajoled , kidded  and coaxed the horse  into the  race..it  wasnt  produced  in  any  way  until close  to the  final fence and  Ruby got  up  by the  minimum margin  on the  rails . I differ  with  you  in  your  assessment  of the reason that Ruby  often chooses  the  country  route . There  is  more than one  way  of  skinning a  cat and going the  shortest  route  as  you  are  no  doubt  aware  , is not  always  the best plan . Ruby sits  as  quiet as a church  mouse  and  his horses  often dont  realise  they  are  in a  race  until a  very  late  stage . Of course  I  am  not  arguing that Jacob  is  inept  and  making  mistakes is a characteristic  of  all  humans no  matter  the  discipline. I merely wished that you  explain the " JACOB  IS  RIDING  BETTER  THAN RUBY "  remark.
Mazed , your  comment  about Nicholls not  putting  as  much into his  lesser  lights is something  that  I am sure  Mr Nicholls  would contest . I  have been to Ditcheat and his preparation for  every  horse , no  matter the ability is exceptional . Perhaps this   is  one reason of many that  he  is champion trainer  . Just listen to  his interviews . He seems  to  know about the current  well  being  of  every  animal in his  stable. I thought the 9/4  was  reasonable in a weak event and  it  ran well and  just failed . I  certainly  would  in general agree with the assertion that in smaller  races there  is a lot  of  dead  wood  with  little  or  no  chance. By definition , those races would usually  be where there isnt a level  playing field   i.e no handicapper  giving all some sort of chance.  However  I am sure  the  handicapper would  take  exception to that  remark  in all  handicaps , regardless  of  the  class !!!  Happy

Pablo - don't get me wrong I don't think Ruby is bad or anything but guess its my mathematics background, circumference = 2πr and all that. Just loses too much ground going wide pretty much all the time. Jacob on the whole does not take the scenic route nearly as much and given I think both have good hands, settle horses well I'd choose Jacob over Walsh. Fehily is better than both of them IMO but doesn't get nearly the chances he should. His ride on Fine Parchment the other day was beautiful even if he did get outstayed.
Report pablo gonzales • October 26, 2011 5:45 PM BST
Yes  i  already  knew  from your reasoned  debate that you  think Ruby  is  a good jockey . After all , it  would be  nigh  on impossible  to  argue  against that ! I  like Fehily too .....Noel  has  been generally  wasted on Jonjo's second  strings  over  the  years . It is  when all is  said  and  done , almost  impossible to  prove  that one  good  jockey  is better than another  in national hunt  racing ,  unless  of  course  we mention AP ...a  freak  of  nature  the like  of  which  we  will  never  see  again.
Report R Carver • October 26, 2011 5:46 PM BST
Racingguru - I think the wide route on Gansey may have been to let the horse see his fences. The horse habitually makes an error (as he did, even when taking the wide route, on Saturday). Dropping him out also seems fine to me because he is a known puller. Obviously you want to get some cover for keen horses, but burying a horse who makes errors is not a great idea possibly. I think Ruby may be lacking a bit of confidence given his various injuries, and it is sensible now he is getting on a bit, to cut back on the rubbish, but I want to see much more evidence before I accept he is showing signs of deterioration. Everyone on here knows I am not a big fan of Jacob (who is young, can learn from the master, and so should improve) so I'll not comment on him.

Pablo - I think I agree with virtually everything you have said on here!

Btw, we all remember Poquelin in the **** but what about his ride on Poquelin in his seasonal reappearance in '09?! Joking of course!
Report pablo gonzales • October 26, 2011 6:00 PM BST
yes  carver  ....that  is  exactly  it .......nobody  has  given  enough  evidence  to  suggest  Ruby  is  now  a  back  number . Of  course  we  can select individual  races . Ruby  is  by  nature  very  self  effacing  and  critical  and  he  would  probably  agree  with  us . ha  ha  yes....Poquelin was  one  of  my  favourite  animals from this  stable  so  I  do  get  your  humour . I  tend  to  agree  that Jacob  is  not  up  to  the  high  profile  job but  analysis  of  jocks  isnt  an  exact  science  as  we  all  know . However  its  refreshing  to  see  a  debate where  we  dont  have  throw  away comments  like "rubbish " , cant ride "  and other  meaningless  drivel ! Happy
