Might be wrong but it is starting to appear as if some are taking the job out of Darleys hands - may well help produce a bit more clarity and speedier resolution, whichever way it goes.

I think he does realise how lucky he is to be riding all those great horses for Nicholls, but he also has to stand up for what he believes in. These boys need to stick together and stand up to these clowns at the BHA once and for all. This whip rule saga is an absolute embarrassment. Like him or not he's taking a stance and it won't be long before this snowballs into something much bigger, hopefully!

Acey Ruby could hardly be considered lucky in view of the serious injuries he has had. I dont know how you could possibly conclude that "he doesnt give two fecks for the job". PN and WM know who the best jock around is - it is simple and his record proves it. Ruby had proved his class before he ever rode for PN. My understanding is that at Chelters Ruby can pick his ride and the other trainer accepts and Ruby normally gets it right so the "rejected" trainer/owner also then knows that theirs probably is not good enough to win anyway.

Rules are there to be discusssed, challenged when necessary. We should not meekly stand by unquestioningly. It seems to me very few jockeys are supportive of the rules. The PJA seem incapable of acting decisively in this issue so I am not surprised jockeys are voicing their frustration.

Hughes said in his interview on RUK that they felt that the restriction of hits in the final furlong or from the last fence was a kind of trap, that was the bit to my ears that really bothered them as this was telling them how to ride a finish, this and the monetary penalties have been removed and yet they are still not happy.Do they just want it returned to the old rules? If so they should just say it.

It is up to the senior jockeys like Ruby to tell it as it is. Many of the less successful jockeys cannot/cannot afford to do this. It is as simple as that.
Report councillor • October 24, 2011 6:31 PM BST
One thing is for sure Ruby Walsh is not irreplacable.  No jockey is. I think his attitude is a bit of sour grapes because he has quickly succumbed to overuse of the whip. Whether you like the rule or not (which I dont by the way) it was there and you have to adhere to the rule and that is a fact. Its no use bleating after you have transgressed the rules because it does not suit.

The BHA (The Jockey Clubb under a new name) have run racing into the ground. The value of races compared to 20 years ago is a disgrace.

The PJA is led by an ex jockey who says he had 'never heard of a corrupt race or ride} whilst he was riding.

The blind and thick meeting the blind and dumb.

No wonder this is a debacle.

The jockeys with sense and intelligence, Ruby being one, need to step up and let these BHA mugs, and Darley, know that not being able to use the whip on a 3/4 ton chaser coming up the hill in heavy going at somewhere like Carlisle will end up with a jockey being injured

"so quitting produces harmony in the workplace does it??"

If everything is roses in the garden the BHA can say everything is roses in the garden.
The rules many believe are ill conceived will remain unmodified.

The a sh1t storm is kicked up by enough people then the BHA will become so out of touch that to keep their positions they will withdraw these rules or they will resign.

I would advocate there was anything but harmony. There needs to be the mother of all sh1t storms.

i disagree, brute force is the only thing this embarrassment of an organisation understand!! to think they hardly consulted the jocks about this new whip rule and then implemented it just before champions day!

their stupidity knows no bounds! they think they can do what they want!!

just like ryan moore says, whats the point in having this rule? whats the diff between hitting a horse 7 and not 8 times? is hitting the horse 7 times ...ok?

and if the whip is NOT the issue, which apparently it isnt, why the fook have they brought the rule in in the first place?

they seem absolutely clueless when it comes to dealing with horses and their welfare! these stupid measures are in place to appease these facking animal rights protesters over the grand national!! the BHA are an absolute embarrassment to the industry and have their heads so far up their own a rses that they have fallen out of touch with the sport!!

im totally in favour of a strike and i hope to god they do it becuase something needs to be done!! how the hell can a jockey count in their heads the amount of slaps they give a horse in the heat of a race and at the same time be expected to steer that horse to victory giveing the horse its full chance of winning!! the mind boggles at these fooking idiots!
Report TiptheOdds • October 24, 2011 7:24 PM BST
It could be argued that by just continuing to ride despite disagreeing with the new rules, is essentially giving tacit approval to their workability.

What Walsh, and Hughes before him, argue is the new rules do not allow jockeys to get the best out of their mounts and therefore do proper service to the trainers and owners who employ them - as well as all the punters who may have backed them.

The new rules mean that many horses that should win will lose, and punters can throw the formbook out the window. Perhaps the BHA just want to feck up the results so that bookmakers profits - and therefore levy - will increase?
Report buddeliea • October 24, 2011 7:26 PM BST
well i hope this can be solved without strike action, cos i dont want to miss any racing,in particular the NH meetings that are looming.
But i will say i want an end to this debacle, and if that was the only way then i would accept it.Just hope it dont come down to that, and that someone somehere involved in this can come up with a sensible solution that pleases all.
Report TiptheOdds • October 24, 2011 7:28 PM BST
I would be very surprised, given their attitude towards jockeys and their head-in-the-sand ineptitude, if the BHA are prepared to back down without at least the threat of strike action.
Report 1st time poster • October 24, 2011 7:31 PM BST
there is no concrete eveidence that beaten horses would have won with a few extra whacks, your making wild statements on your ability to pick out horses who improve for a whack compared to others hardly science, what about horses who might improve and race longer for getting less smacks, how many trainers have put horses winning down to sympathetic rides on previous outings
Report TiptheOdds • October 24, 2011 7:50 PM BST
I think you have misunderstood what I said. I didn´t say that. I said that the horses that have been winning under the old rules - ie horses that clearly respond to a few wakeners -  may not win given the same conditions under the new rules.

Nobody could describe either Walsh or Hughes as whip happy. Both are among the finest and most sympathetic jockeys to ride in this country, and both are able to settle horses and bring them slowly into a race without resort to the whip. But both are also fine enough horsemen to know when a horse is idling or could do more.

I think Walsh gave his mount a fine ride to win on Saturday - as did Nicky Mackay at Wolves - but both will now be careful not to go over the limit in future, even if it means losing a race they could have won.
Report throwthetellyoutawindow • October 24, 2011 9:10 PM BST
Ruby Walsh totally correct to rail against the BHA they are ruining the sport let jockeys do their job his Saturday ride on Edgardo Sol was beautiful to watch man coaxing the best from a very good horse winning a race that didn't look likely approaching the last.A professional at work let him do his job ffs.

I have read plenty of comment and indeed anger at the incompetence of the BHA over the past week or so. While it is good to vent frustration on a forum like this perhaps our time would be better spent bombarding the BHA with emails letting them know exactly what people who love the sport think of their stupidity. You can contact these clowns at info@britishhorseracing.com !!
Report Steamship • October 24, 2011 11:08 PM BST
I think the main gripe for Walsh was that it was 5 days for 1 extra hit, this then jumps to 10 if he is done again. Then as I understand it a 3rd whip offence means you have to prove youre worthy of a licence. Also the financial penalties are harsh. I also think the BHA would have more support if this was the only problem, but the truth is they have helped make a big deal over something that is not a big deal for most. Have any of us been asked our thoughts on the whip? Nobody has confidence in the BHA anymore.
Report TiptheOdds • October 24, 2011 11:15 PM BST

Report jackrussel • October 24, 2011 11:22 PM BST
If the jockey's are prepared to strike, and imo a strike is the only way to resolve this, then don't mess about with a quiet Monday or Tuesday, use the day that hurts most, Saturday, Newmarket, Ascot and Wetherby, announce the strike asap, and the pressure from the bookies to the BHA will bring everyone to the table long before Saturday!!
Report Markphisto • October 24, 2011 11:23 PM BST
It is time for the BHA to listen to the 99% and not the 1%. If this is how they deal with a issue which should not even be on their agenda how can they inspire confidence to deal with racings current and future real problems. These are the people who are entrusted with promoting racing and in little over one week they have probably damaged it irreversibly...

One factor to consider regarding the bans is how little racing there is in the north during the winter - with a 5 day ban, with racing being frozen off, you could have some jockeys unable to earn a living for a month or more.
Report roggrain • October 25, 2011 10:59 AM BST
Could be wrong, carver, but I think bans apply to days when there is racing anywhere in the country, not just the region a jockey resides in.

I've e-mailed the BHA on several occasions, markphisto, not on this but other issues. For example,I've asked them why blindfolds are not required to be removed before the starter opens the stalls, thereby avoiding the problem we've seen recently of jockeys struggling to get the blindfold off. It is, I've pointed out to them, only a matter of time before a horse throws a jockey as the gates open and heads off hell for leather wearing a blindfold!
The BHA's reply to my e-mails?. Haven't had any! They don't even have the courtesy to tell me to p... off!
