he can't afford to honour the current arrangement they have; I'll bet willie mullins has had something to say and why not?

who told you that?

This sounds rather silly and implausible to me .
Are two accomplished, highly experienced jockeys saying they could not adapt to a different regulatory regime in regard to race riding ...that would show them up as very limited and one dimensional indeed.
If the British based jockeys can change and get on with it -why can't anyone else ?
Report bruce4syth • October 23, 2011 3:07 PM BST
becuz their grouse is all about the different rules over here and in Ireland, surely you can appreciate that!
Report maxheadroom • October 23, 2011 3:08 PM BST
walshes think there bigger than the game itself....hope pumpkin calls his bluff.
Report GEORGE.B • October 23, 2011 3:08 PM BST
Geraghty said that the rules are fine if you're riding one who travels, but if you're riding a lazy one who needs a few smacks to get going, by the time you're at the last, you've used your quota up.

He singled Brave Inca out as a good example of one who needed plenty of encouragement with the jockey's aid.

He also opined that Harchibald might have beaten Hardy Eustace in the Champion Hurdle under the new rules.
Report Arklearkle • October 23, 2011 3:09 PM BST
Vubiant have a look at Ruby Walshs complete record in the Aintree Grand National. Most certainly not limited and one dimensional. Walsh and Geraghty know that the regulatory regime is an ass.

Does Rooby get paid a retainer and, if he does, I wonder what the owners who pay it think of this?
Report GAMBLINGJOCKEY • October 23, 2011 3:11 PM BST
just speculation then really
Report salmon spray • October 23, 2011 3:14 PM BST
I`ve never seen anybody define Walsh`s agreement with Nicholls. I imagine it is not a straightforward retainer as he certainly rides Mullins horse if he thinks it has a better chance.
Report Yank • October 23, 2011 3:16 PM BST
World class jocks, trainers, horses == not wedded to British racing. So if BHA sh*ts in its own pit, we will have to pay the price.
Report Arklearkle • October 23, 2011 3:22 PM BST
99% certain that he gets no retainer from either. I would imagine that PNs opinion of the new rules is the same as RWs
Report GEORGE.B • October 23, 2011 3:25 PM BST
And I suppose the anti-whip brigade will argue does it matter that Harchibald might have beaten Hardy Eustace - every race will still have a winner, etc

Well yes, imo, because as others have argued, the competitiveness is being taken out of the sport.

Btw, Hardy Eustace received at least 14 encouragements from the jockey's aid after the penultimate hurdle in that great race.

this might be a bad example but it's surely difficult to ride in tandem in both countries, a bit like playing rugby league and then rugby union?

As well as a fine horseman, world-class jockey and excellent communicator, Ruby is also widely-recognised as a short-fused, petulant, tantrum-thrower.

Let's hope the latter weaknesses don't overcome the initial stengths Sad
Report salmon spray • October 23, 2011 3:37 PM BST
It might well be logical for him to ride primarily in Ireland, where he is not going to get regular bans. I would think a well-informed decision not a tantrum.
Report The Headmaster • October 23, 2011 3:40 PM BST
Holding races up at Aintree due to a personal reverse can never be well-informed, I'd have thought, SS.

I would if that's the first I'd heard of it, Arkle.  This goes way back though.

ruby walsh is a dedicated, pragmatic professional; he 'works' for money but loves race-riding; as a person he leaves absolutely nothing to be desired unless those who comment know him very personally and can enlighten us further.
AP is also a tremendous bloke, genuine as the day is light and, significantly, lists ruby as a very good friend.
they are passionate about jockeyship and are saddened by the 'unprofessional' deeds of this current BHA set-up. read newspapers but don't read into everything you read!

So many opinions, but this sums it up quite well for me.....

McCoy had earlier said he believed it was time to “stop talking and get on with riding” as the prospect of strike action appeared to be receding.

However, writing in the Daily Telegraph, McCoy said: “Many of my colleagues have been coming to me and complaining about the penalties and I agree with them.

“No offence to them but why should I be the one who sticks his head above the parapet? I don’t want to be portrayed as the troublemaker here and tarnish my own reputation.”
Report Yank • October 23, 2011 4:05 PM BST
Jamie Spencer took a far better stand. Then again, those who love to slag jocks well say it was self serving because of the ride he gave Cape Blanco.
But he pointed out that French and Aussie jocks stuck together while English jocks took a kicking and rolled over. Rings true to me.
Report GEORGE.B • October 23, 2011 4:05 PM BST
Is this McCoy the multi-millionaire who is going all out to ride 300 winners this season, and who will be riding a high percentages of favourites, many of whom will be steering jobs?

Hmmmm, I wonder why he doesn't want to go on strike...

Ruby "Rules or Rules". "It's not right the rule is wrong".. "I'm not riding in tuesday, or friday and  now every ride i take i will have to work it out what is on ten days in advance(the time the ban starts)". "I dont think i will be able to ride in the UK midweek". "I think there will be strike"
Report Ramruma • October 23, 2011 4:55 PM BST
It is the penalties the jockeys are objecting to more than the rule itself.

The BHA should forget the bans and fines and simply disqualify the horse.
Report Ramruma • October 23, 2011 5:03 PM BST
Ironically, Paul Nicholls has complained in the past about Ruby riding at rubbish meetings in Ireland, though I think it was the risk of injury rather than bans that concerned him.

Note what Ruby is saying. Not that he won't ride in Britain at all but he will be reluctant to ride in low-paying races if he risks losing a big payday by picking up a ban. Not really a point of principle.
Report brigust1 • October 23, 2011 6:25 PM BST
For those who think AP should fight for the jockeys, it is not his job. It is Kevin Darley's job. If AP started taking over others would question why when there is already a Chief Executive of the PJA.
Report Anaglogs Daughter • October 23, 2011 6:33 PM BST
He also said itv remains to be seen whats on 10 days from that date..I can't see him risking a ride on one of Walshes to miss 6 to 10 of Willies

Complete overreaction from Ruby IMO.It sounds like he plans to break the rules, can't count or thinks himself above the rules. He come across as vain and arrogant so maybe the later.
Report quay_street • October 23, 2011 6:55 PM BST
He is being perfectly practical and pragmatic. He is also being protective of his living. The BHA have kowtowed to the "anti whip" lobby. Now they can live with the consequences.

Increasingly, the best horses will run in the bigger races in Ireland and France.

The sponsors will soon get the message and move there as well. With Racing UK and ATR carrying meetings from those countries, the only thing that will be missing will be terrestrial coverage.

But then, Channel 4 will maybe get the message and start carrying meetings from Ireland and France on a Saturday afternoon.

Agreed - what you say makes sense. If the horses and jockeys are running in France or Ireland what difference does it make to punters who aren't at the meetings?
On course betting will go, rack track receipts will go. The sponsors will move the off shore meetings.
Animal Aid will achieve their goal of the demise of horse racing.

The BHA have taken a NON-ISSUE and made a laughing stock of UK racing. Racing has many more REAL issues it should be dealing with than this nonsense. How can anyone have any confidence in these incompetents promoting and securing a better future for racing when they are destroying it from within. If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable....what a shambles....
Report Santry • October 23, 2011 8:31 PM BST
Whatever about Ruby Walsh riding in the UK under these arrangements I think it is a total no no for Barry Geraghty as he is fond of the stick and i dont think he will adapt. Believe though that those running the game in the UK are on a path of self destruction. These horses are treated better most humans in the world and are occasionally given a few slaps of the whip to encourage them to earn there keep . Big deal.
