i have read many posts but not many suggestions on how to fix the dispute so here are some of my ideas 11 strike for flat races ( think the 7 strike number is to low) also 11 for jumps racing with the count resetting to 11 every time you pass the winning post(enabling the jockey to get those lazy ones going on the first circuit and still be able to ride a decent finish) or for a more complicated system 5f and 6f races 6 strikes 7f 8f 9f 7strikes 10f 11f 12f 9strikes 1m 5f and more 11 strikes a similar system could be developed for jump racing ps i know some courses finishing lines are up a chute but i am sure some point could be agreed i think the penalties should remain as they are as i see the 7 and 8 strikes the wrong numbers for all races
I'd allow a simple system whereby all 400 or so professional jockeys currently riding in the UK had to specify upfront and in writing the individual rules that they'd like to be measured and regulated against. Then, for each race I'd assign one steward per jockey to scrutinise whether the jockey did indeed ride within the rules that they'd specified.
Option 2
Ban the use of the whip altogether (save for corrective purposes)
p.s. I think Option 1 is the one most jockeys are working towards although I hear that there are rumours of discontent at actually having to write the rules down.

its total rubbish - it asnt solved the problem in the grand national when everyone watches - the jockeys will still whip them to death as the prize is bigger than the penatly.

i cant understand why a 5f/6f race a horse can be ENCOURAGED 7 times, and in a 3mile race only 8? Also, the run in [after the last hurdle]at stratford can be judged the same as cartmel/kelso etc?
Why not say 15 times in a NHrace with a max of 10after the last obstacle.... Any horse which is found to have been hit in the wrong place /had its skin broken by the crop ,then give the rider a stiff penalty of whatever can be decided. I cant think of anyone in the game who wants to hurt horses, and surely the rulers of the sport we love need to stop ruining it.

i happen to feel that any rules on whip use will be frowned upon by those that have to uphold them.i dont beleive for a moment that most jockeys care to count when they are trying to win.this has all the makings of the biggest own goal since the fox hunt brigade claimed to be stamping out vermin. THE SHOCK HORROR TRUTH ,horses are hit because it makes them (generally) more likely to win THE SOLUTION pay jockeys for sympathetic rides, perhaps a bonus or two if it looks like they are trying for their life (god forbid air whipping )

perhaps each strike over a set limit resulted in % loss of purse would be step forward.penalizing jocks for trying to win seems slightly ironic given the debacle of the court cases in the last few years

No limit on strikes, there should be a panel watching each race and use common sense if they see a jockey going way over the top then he gets a hefty ban.

STart by buying all the jocks an abacus/calculator/blackboard+chalk!!
I SIMPLY DO NOT BELIEVE they find it that hard to count how many pints they're buying or shags they've had that week... so just how hard can it be to count how many times they've hit a horse?!!!
It WOULD be quite funny if they all started shouting their tally out loud, jossing with eachother as they neared the finish line - bit like tennis players grunting - wld we see/hear complaints that this was putting the other jocks off their stride/stroke? Wld be a funny way of sticking two fingers up to the authorities

I would have the whip independently and scientifically tested to see if it harms the horse. If it does harm the horse can it be modified so it does not? If it does not or a modified whip did not, then educate the public. Tell the pressure groups to go forth. Then change the rule so that if would prevent harm to the horse. So if the whip in its current state or a modified state did not harm the horse I would lift all restrictions on its use.
A rule should only exist because there is a proven reason for it. If there isn't a good reason for the rule then there should not be that rule. As long as the public know it does not harm the horse there is no reason to restrict its use of the whip.
Call the whip something else. The term whip is too emotive.

the only finishers in next year's grand national (if there are any) will be the few plodders who are just hacking round at the back.
if the going is particularly soft then it might be worth a bet on "no finishers"

lets get this straight.the whip does not hurt.even the bha and the whwa agree that one so there should be no limit.let the jocks get on with their job ffs abnnd let genuine lovers of the sport have their enjoyment.life is short as regards so called public perception it is for the BHA to educate the public not pander to ignorant prejudice from those who dont give a toss if the sport lives or dies if local stewards think for whatever reason theres been overuse in a particular race its for them to fine/suspend or whatever

I am english, for the most part proud to be but would always think twice about getting my countrymen to run anything I love.
As per usual we have managed to make the situation worse, leave the rules as they were and send the disgraceful idiot "big mac" back to Harrow and ask them for a full explanation as to how we arrived at such a pathetic brain.
Horse whippers are extremely rare, root them out and let the industry make their point. Job done!

And he always uses the word 'beat' when referring to horses being encouraged with the air-cushioned 'jockey's aid'.
Perhaps Julian Wilson has a lot to answer for...

If the new whips do not cause pain and do not mark or cut horses then there is no sensible reason to have a limit on the number of strikes.
As Claude Charlet pointed out last week it really is quite simple: as long as a horse is responding to the whip by going forward or at least holding its position relative to the others then it is OK to use it; when a horse is clearly not responding by losing its position then the whip should be put down, otherwise it is abuse.
Suspensions for offenders should suffice, but be more severe than in the past.

In NH racing where do most whip offences take place? On the run-in. So, a very simple solution to the problem is just to reduce the length of the run-in to 100yards max at all tracks...

Agree with Six Gun, Racing Post and all Racing people eg jockeys trainers owners should start calling the "whip" a different name. Maybe a "Guider or Guidance". Make another modification to it and then rename it. Simple

back to STATUS QUO immediately when new rules were brought in ,BHA should have reccommended ,a trial period to the end of this season , and they would know by now they need addressed again , as it looks unworkable take on board what jockey says ???they normally sort it via the stewards ???including taking race off the winner , if rules are breached .jockeys to blame almost totally for demeanors in past which fired up this revue ..............we know who it was so do fellow jockeys , yet they claim they let the on going perpetrator /s know to get it stopped ..............nobody wants change on british soil, while other countries see fit to punish horses with 20 plus smacks , if not neeccessary ,... it all upsets records for this season , I know but if fixed for start of 2012 then something worthwhile will be seen to be done ..............JOCKEYS PLEASE stick with it but play the game ..striking not the answer in the climate we have at the moment,, you take part to obtain best possible placing for your horse, with you all the way on that one .all in past now move on ? sort it out A.S.A.P. ALTERNATIVE AS YOU KNOW IS NO WHIPS IN FUTURE.....hopefully a few years away if this works , maybe never if common sense kicks in and resolved SOON......................BEST OF LUCK with this you can fix it >>>
