I wonder who was he waving to Laugh

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Chris Catlin, the rider of FASHIONABLE GAL (IRE), placed second, in the closing stages. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him not in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he was waving his whip and not making contact.

#Whip: just heard jockeys at Newbury have voted to strike; all but 1 rider said yes to strike; result of similar vote at Donc not known yet balloting of PJA members at Newbury (voted yes), Doncaster (not yet known) & Wolverhampton (this evening); seems to be Flat only atm  senior riders in conference call discussions this evening; should have results of ballots by then

gerry, i don't and have never thought this is about hughes, i think he was right to say what he thought, ie the rules are wrong but he as a senior member of the weighing room should be ensuring that whatever they all agree on is in everyones interests, if it's ok for him but not the majority then tough, he'll have to give up a bit

i don't think that is the case though, i think that too many people are quoting before the details have even been properly discussed, so they keep getting caught out

clearly a complete lack of control and a lack of confidence for an outcome to be determined through the proper channels

Egner why would they look ridiculous if they strike. In fact I would suggest they will look ridiculous if they dont strike. They should have struck when the iron was hot ie about 3 days before last Saturday.

They will pick a day when all the top jockeys are away anyhow and the poor journeyman/woman one ride a day jockey that actually pay to go to work will be left scratching their Niagara's if they have them Mischief for the day

elise - if it hasn't been properly discussed, why on earth did Hughes rush back into action today? He's trying to take a stand and look principled - if he goes back on this what should we think of him?

...what DO THEY WANT arkeakle.....they ask for something..its given.....they are still not happy......is it the penalties...is it the number of whip strikes...if they cannot agree themselves then their position is hardly credible.....

and i have stated this before but will state it again...

if the jockeys had not flouted and in some cases completely ignored the OLD whip rules then perhaps they may have been kept....now it is out of their hands because they will not go back to the old rules......and i for one am glad.

If they do strike, and the Great Hughsie does the media curcuit again, hopefully someone can actually grill him about the glaring inconsistencies in his outbursts.

as i said, i think this is about the sport not individuals, the pja and bha whilst i'm sure would like to appease the likes of hughes and soumi should be thinking about the young lads who get one ride a day if they are lucky and barely scrape a living in respect of their view on jockeys

Egner I dont know what they asked for and if they are voting in favour of striking then they must not have got what they wanted. Of course I would not be certain that they they knew what they wanted (or possibly it was badly articulated).

One thing for sure if Jockeys withdraw their labour the dispute eventually will be resolved on

terms basically implemented by them and surely heads will have to roll at the BHA.

I hope they go on strike and then the BHA say NO CHANGE, then the jocks will look like proper mugs. What are they going to do then? Go on Strike again? I doubt it very much as i said the Journeymen jocks wont stand for that they will go to work and the other jocks will look like bigger mugs then what they look like now.

Not necessarily, I wonder what would happen if the Maktoum family, and other big owners, weighed in on the side of the BHA. A lot of jocks and trainers would be scurrying for cover, imo.
By:

Why would they??
By:

When: 21 Oct 11 17:52
i agree with AD and im not so sure we eck....

..depends greatly on their demands and the clarity with which they make those demands....

..the wider public..and call them uneducated about racing if you like...will lose sympathy very quickly if there is a hint they are striking to be able to whip the horses more.
By:

Sheikh Mo hasn't pm'd me recently, on here, but the point I'm obviously making is that this threat of strike action would completely disintegrate, if they did.
By:

When: 21 Oct 11 18:00
interesting times, i think if the trainers back the jocks then the Sheikh's wouldnt overrule. Then the BHA are GONE
