Yes the real world is a bit of a shocker isn't it?

You can pick what you like out of this morning's programme. Perhaps you don't like the idea of a little balance. They did interview Tom Dascombe more than once. For me the most important thing he said was that it is the waving of the whip that motivates the horse - so why hit it then?

They could have mentioned the limited opportunities for reluctant horses if they cant use the whip sensibly. We need an outraged media like a hole in the head if it gets like dog racing when dodgy dogs get put to sleep because they will not run. The Law of Unintended Consequences ?

In previous years, nothing to do with racing or betting, I would be asked my opinion by the BBC/ITV/press/radio.

Can I tell you now they are after a story not the truth. The truth is not sensational. They want stories of wheals on the hindquarters of horses, bleeding gushing out of raw wounds, horses limping round the stables with festering sores and sadistic jockeys revelling in inflicting pain driving the horses on with no care or concern for their welfare.

This is what they really want, it makes a good story.

Misguided, and incorrect, Whip report on BBC News

onlooker:   14 Oct 11 13:42

BBC 1-00 o'clock News - just had a Woman Sports reporter (Well, after all, the Head of BBC Sport is a WOMAN, too) reporting on the 'Jockeys Strike'.

In explaining the issue, she said...

" Jockeys are only allowed to strike the horse 7 times in a race - BUT -

They HAVE to hit the horse 5 times in the final furlong.

There we go - 'a little  knowledge is a dangerous thing' - and now the Public have a FURTHER WRONG impression.

Here are a couple of specifics (which no doubt you'll pick holes in)....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00cndz6

Cash In The Celebrity Attic - The infamous and outspoken racing tipster John McCririck and his long suffering wife 'the Booby' invite the Cash in the Attic team into their fascinating London home, so they can raise money together for retired racehorses.

http://www.doolallys.com/Poker/poker-articles/littlewoods-poker-all-star-challenge.htm

Celebrity Poker - £2000 raised by McCririck for Greatwood

The point I'd make though acklash is that McCririck and his wife have done almost unquantifiable good in terms of using their profile (his profile really) to raise public awareness of Greatwood and the tremendous work it does. If you could put a figure on this, I'm sure that it would run into tens of thousands.
Report homefortea • October 22, 2011 12:52 PM BST
Someone has to say it but if he has raised all that much for the said Charity how come (from memory on C4 racing) they have only re-homed 80 horses over the years ! I nearly fell of my chair when that figure was mentioned, from all the bold talk I thought that it must be thousands..
Report brigust1 • October 22, 2011 1:02 PM BST
I think Greatwood is a brilliant charity. I do though question when famous or rich people make charitable donations because they are tax free. So dependent upon the level of tax to be paid decides the level of the donation.
Add to that J Mac opened his house for others to pay the money he donated and the celebrity poker was money he won raised in a celebrity poker match. I know it is nit picking but there is a large element of self publicising as well.

A bit like Who want to be a Millionaire and their charity shows. Massive tax relief hugely reduce donations.

Not quite the same as you and me putting our hands in our pockets and handing over our cash. In my opinion of course.

The thing about Fat Mac going on these supposed celebrity type programmes that have nothing to do with racing is that once he goes on one, the makers of others (some might even be the same makers) then know he's open to possibly going on their programme and that probably explains why he's been on Celebrity Big Brother and all of the spin-offs of that, Wife Swap, Coach Trip (all Channel 4 at the time) Hell's Kitchen, the Weakest Link as well as various chat shows (Alan Titchmarsh etc.) and radio stations.

Surely it's only a matter of time before he goes on I'm A Non-entity......and then ends up doing the Iceland adverts! Shocked

What you have to remember guys is groups like Animal Welfare infiltrate racing and other animal related forums just to create unrest and push their message. These guys aren't punters and their agenda is not the success of our sport. It is the demise of it.

Getting into arguments with these blinkered activists is just what they want. All they seem to do all day long is infest these debates with their one-sided views.

If guys like Gerry Gallbladder were genuine, pro-active, successful punters they would do anything not to change the status quo. But they aren't. That is why they pour out their nonsensical drivel.

Try not to give them the time of day. They may go away.

brigust, I should have another read of your last post - most of it from what I have read on here appears to sum you up pretty well. I haven't got a clue whether you are a successful punter or not but like most of your comments that is totally irrelevant to the overall picture. As I have said before the horse itself doesn't seem to matter to you - it just provides something you can bet on - that and the mistaken belief that unless you hit a horse with a whip it isn't trying is all you seem to care about. Horse racing is not a closed shop although that by your reference to 'our sport' is what you would like - it is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone. It is you who is blinkered.

WALOFS. If you donate an amount to charity the charity can claim back the tax you paid on that amount. If you pay tax at x% that means it will personally cost you (100 - x)% of the donation.

If guys like Gerry Gallbladder were genuine, pro-active, successful punters they would do anything not to change the status quo. But they aren't. That is why they pour out their nonsensical drivel.

I'm a genuine, pro-active, successful punter and one of the reasons I want rid of the whip is because it's an aid to cheating.

Differentdrum. All you did in your last post was show just how completely ignorant you are of horse racing.

Frankly your views mean absolutely nothing to me. All I am interested in is the success of horseracing in this country. To achieve success the sport relies completely on finances from gambling. If horseracing becomes a safe haven for crooks and cheats then there is only one way it can go, down.

That is exactly why I cannot understand the stance of anyone who wants the whip banned because it is definitely a 'cheats charter'. So by that fact I discern you are not a successful gambler otherwise you too would would be worried about crooks and cheats.

And I do believe the whip should be used when necessary. The decision about when and whether to use the whip I am quite happy to leave to the professionals I respect.
