RACING again demonstrated its opposition to the vote to ban foxhunting and hare-coursing - which was subsequently passed in Parliament yesterday - with protests at all three of the afternoon's meetings.
Jockeys at Yarmouth emulated their colleagues at Thirsk on Tuesday and Stratford on Sunday by taking to the course.
Around 40 people at the Norfolk track took up the call to show their protest between the second and third races, drawing a round of applause from the crowd. Attheraces presenter John McCririck made a stirring defence of foxhunting over the public tannoy.
Darley, who had taken part in the protest at Thirsk on the previous afternoon, summed up the mood, saying: 'Anyone who has anything to do with horses should support the protest. After today it could spell the end of hunting.'
Racecourse doctor Lucy Free organised a photo-call at Sandown, where jockeys were pictured holding placards bearing the message 'Fight Prejudice, Fight The Ban'.
Explaining her decision to organise the demonstration, Free said: 'It's something I feel very strongly about and it wasn't hard to get the jockeys involved as a lot of them hunt and they understand the implications a foxhunting ban has for racing.
'I go hunting and it's through that I got into racing, via point-to-pointing. If hunting goes, other field sports will soon be challenged and then it will be point-to-pointing and jumps racing.'
Five pro-hunt demonstrators stormed into the House of Commons House of Commons: see Parliament. chamber and around 10,000 protestors gathered in Parliament Square to demonstrate against the ban that was passed in a free vote as MPs came out in favour of the ban by 356 votes to 166, a majority of 190.

There is absolutely no doubt that racing shot itself in the foot by associating itself so closely with the pro-hunting mob. But at least some of them are consistent.

I am the man around the place. You can't have equality. That's absurd to think that she is equal to me. Anybody knows that is ridiculous.''
You put a vote to the foxes and the hares - do you want hunting and hare coursing to continue? - they would say yes,'' he contends.
No other place on earth is a better sanctuary for the fox or the hare than the UK. Always remember the animals themselves.
You try and shoot foxes and hares. I've been to hare shoots - they're bloody affairs because nobody can shoot them one hundred percent.
Most hares are wounded, go away, take days to die. Shooting is not the answer for foxes and hares.''
