i know you wont but  stop spouting innacurate rubbish regarding the whip / they are air cushioned now in case you dont know . all your publicity just  gives further fuel to the fire to people who know nothing about the sport an just believe its cruel  regardless of knowing the facts . please shut up and retire you eejit. no ones saying excessive use of the air cushioned whip shouldnt be punished  but i suppose  you enjoy seeing a lazy horse that could win   now wont in light of  these ridiculous new rules. if it aint broke dont fix it . they should return to the old rules with immediate effect . this is ruining the sport . jockeys cannot do there job properlyu under these rules every horse is different  . it should be left to the horseman to decide . if a proffessional  as respected as richard hughes  cannot ride under these regulations  then  common sense must prevail he is a consummate proffessional  an for him to be banned twice for whip regulations just shows how far  wrong these regulations are   hughesy lives and breathes horses  . hope they sort this mess out . the  powers that be should not be altering the  sport just to suit an ignorant  misinformed   non racing pubplic.

And presumably he'll be accepting payment for his 'work' from C4 / ATR when appearing at NH racetracks where horses will DIE in the name of sport.

No horse is likely to die from being encouraged with an air-cushioned 'jockey's aid'.

If he knows a lot about racing which he claims he will have spoken to jockeys about the air cushioned whip and know that it does not harm horses. He just trying to get himself a more positive profile with those that know little of nothing about racing and sell his mis guided copy.

Mc Cririck certainly gets carried away far too much and also becomes far too emotive on issues...which leads to him being rounded on...

but i would say that rather than make  him a scapegoat for the dreadful PR that racing is enduring ...

the chief protaginists in all this the Jockeys/trainers and the BHA should look to themselves first.
Report Captain Christy • October 20, 2011 6:22 PM BST
You only have to look at the battering that horses get in the U.S and the drugging and the mis-treatment from the likes of Micky Quinn to know that the BS spouted about how much those within the industry love animals is a total myth. McCririck's stance flies against the self-serving crap we hear from the animal abusers.
Report TiptheOdds • October 20, 2011 6:30 PM BST
To be fair to JMc he has always been consistent in calling for a total ban on the whip, which would still be a more desirable outcome than the present mish-mash shambles. When you impose limits on the number of strikes - especially with such heavy penalties -  you distract jockeys from doing their job properly and open the sport to widespread cheating by penalising the jockeys who are trying hardest to win while making allowances for the ones making no effort.
Report egner • October 20, 2011 6:35 PM BST
..yes tiptheodds......his consistency on the subject may be part of the reason why he is being rounded on...together with his delivery style of course!!!!

..nonetheless his consistency of position is in stark contrast to the trainers and especially the jockeys whose position seems to change.....if not on an hourly basis..then certainly daily!!!!!!

Egner if Big Mac was so against the whip he would raise the issue every time he attends the Breeders Cup. But he doesn't. Why? Because they won't have him back. The only reason he spouts against the whip is because he is making a fortune from media attention.
If he morally believed the whip should not be used he would be around the world promoting that view. Why do you think he isn't?
Report 1st time poster • October 20, 2011 7:08 PM BST
he,s a question for the whip happy on here,i think we would all agree that if spencers ride of cape blanco had happened at ascot, 4 weeks ago they would have thrown the book at him and all on atr,ruk etc would have agreed, which leavec a couple of questions,
if as moore said last night hitting a horse correctly does no harm

and if as is now becoming a given that an aircushioned whip cant harm a horse,

why would most agree the ride was a disgrace
Report egner • October 20, 2011 7:12 PM BST

Egner. The jockey's never have a chance to get together whereas the BHA work with each other full time. Do you know how hectic a trainer or jockey's life is? You should try it. They relied on the powers to be to get it right. They trusted the BHA and why shouldn't they? The BHA would be expected to do the right thing by the industry but they didn't. By their actions they have screwed the industry. In any other walk of life they would be sacked or hung out to dry.
Report GEORGE.B • October 20, 2011 7:21 PM BST
It's not known what sort of whip Spencer used that evening, it might not have been air-cushioned.

The ride was a disgrace because he used repeated excessive force and did not give the horse time to respond.

According to the BHA's own scientific report the whip is safe so long as it is used correctly. Using it excessively can have a negative effect.

Report brigust1 • October 20, 2011 7:30 PM BST
These rides only prove that the whip does not have a negative effect on racehorses. Many times the horses given really hard looking rides come out again and win again. I have no problem with the whip providing it is used correctly. I hate horse being hit in the wrong place and I hate horses being hit when all chance has gone.

A bigger threat to horses, in my opinion are blinkers. They scare the sh1t out of young horses.

A whip is carried on a horse from the day it is ridden away. Blinkers are used when they aren't trying. If they cut down on the whip the number of horses wearing blinkers will increase massively.

I never said it didn't hurt, did I? I'm just not convinced the effect is as some believe. We are not horses so I'm not sure what they feel or for how long. What I do know is that horses run for the whip, they try harder when a whip is used and the majority seem to respect it.
Because there is no proof that the whip either hurts or pemanently damages a horse the feelings of onlookers are what are considered. I'm OK with that as long as the general effect doesn't damage the sport.

As I said before as soon as a young horse is 'ridden away' the rider carries a whip. If this was damaging they wouldn't carry the whip, would they?
