He was holding onto nothing- horse pulled his arms out on the first circuit.

I think he knew that he had to win on the bridle or not at all. You can't expect a horse to find for pressure when pulling like that for 2.5 miles

Classic case of a horse finding very little off the bridle after pulling far too hard early doors , the in-play market told you that & swop jockeys around gives the same result 

trying to be clever,jumped better when they were going faster
