specifing whips will never work imo.

like u say, what happens when u use the, up and the horse tries to run out, if leaning in to a likely winner which may result in an accident or a horse losing a v important race like the derby.

if this happens EVEN ONCE its too much, all because the jockey couldnt correct his mount.

now u have a knock on affect were u have furious connections who should have a derby winner in their care but because a horse impeded them , another horse came along a mugged them!how costly financially would this one incident cost? all because the jockey on the wayward horse used up his whips earlier in the race!

absolutey insane!! the bha need to be investigated, right now, they are not a competent organisation!

...i would like a total whip ban.......

...not sure why this is such an outragous statement........no one has whips and will be a level playing field....

...no bans required........

wont be as bad as people think...only in my opinion of course.
Report salmon spray • October 17, 2011 7:19 PM BST
Except that we would be a laughing-stock worldwide egner.
AND you could say goodbye to the GN in 5 years,to all jumps racing in 10 and to flat racing in 20.
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:19 PM BST
there will never be a total ban, they are a tool used for safety as much as encouragement!
Report Brother Mouzone • October 17, 2011 7:21 PM BST
If the whip is rly painful peoples need to ban it, if it isn't there rly shouldn't be any restrictions at all.
Report egner • October 17, 2011 7:21 PM BST
...the safety argument just doesnt wash in my opinion......

...in many cases it causes the horse to veer more erratically.
Report 11kv • October 17, 2011 7:22 PM BST
should the BHA arrange a no whip meeting, trial it see what happens
Report egner • October 17, 2011 7:25 PM BST
good idea 11kv........maybe a couple of weeks would be better though......

give everyone a chance to get used to it....and neagate the fact that those against may try to throw a spanner in the works on the said meeting.

aye

knee jerk reactions on here ,after all its only the jocks who are affected

will all settle down ,may even find the horses respond better to not being beaten day in day out.

although I am not against the use of the whip I dont like to see a gambled on horse beaten to ensure it does the biz after its been ridden quietly for its last couple of outings, but the BHA dont sort that out do they.
Report egner • October 17, 2011 7:32 PM BST
no...not this time sandyboy.
Report egner • October 17, 2011 7:34 PM BST
...no 11KV....they dont sort much out i guess..

..i agree will all settle down and not be as bad as everyone thinks.....

..might be more difficult to land "gambles" as you say....

perhaps thats one of the issues they have !!!!!!

I assume you have probably never ridden a horse, and certainly not a racehorse ?
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:35 PM BST
well if the whip really is the problem then it should be banned altogether!!

i mean if the bha are limiting the amount of whips because of the horses welfare, then surely more than one hit with the whip is deemed too much!

like brother mou said, ban it altogether or as many as a jockey likes!!

theyre foam ffs.

Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:36 PM BST
and by as many as a jock likes i mean within reason, allowing the horse to respond!!

just reinstate the old rules and forget this ever happened!

thought that may come up willow.....

i have ridden horses......not racehorse though

and so obv not raced at 40 mph ...

..if all this makes my opinion invalid than so be it i guess.....

but my opinion stands.....no whip....level playing field....no need for bans.....

you may even get horses running straighter if not being wwhipped when they are effectively exhausted.

Report The Headmaster • October 17, 2011 7:41 PM BST
Saftey issue a red herring.  Jocks will always be able to carry whips for correctional purposes, whether they are to be used for encouragement or not.
Report sandysboy • October 17, 2011 7:41 PM BST
And what do you do when they wont go round a bend?
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:42 PM BST
i judt dont understand the furore!!

why now?

is it because of the outcry from animal activists after this yrs grand national?

it seems that many of the complaints are from OUTSIDE the industry from people that dont know anything about the welfare or conditions of the horses!

surely if it was THAT bad something wouldve been done by know, nearly 2012.

if a jockey marks a horse then fair enough, suspend them!
Report ranader • October 17, 2011 7:43 PM BST
the BHA review group did NOT consider use of the whip a 'welfare issue'
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:45 PM BST
then why are they limiting the amount of whips per race?
Report The Headmaster • October 17, 2011 7:47 PM BST

Report ranader • October 17, 2011 7:48 PM BST
that was stated it their report ilwab

there was a perception apparently amongst women and those with no interest in racing that changes were needed.

that was also stated in their report

it has been reproduced on earlier threads
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:50 PM BST
and is this a legal requirement?

i mean have the RSPCA approached the bha and explained their concerns about the whip?

and are the bha legally bound by what the rspca have to say on the matter?

who has enforced this whip rule? and if its not the rspca, then why have the bha changed it if they arent concerned that the whip is causing harm!
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:51 PM BST
apologies renader, didnt see the other threads!
Report Stake & Chips • October 17, 2011 7:51 PM BST
Have the RSPCA provided input into how many times it is ok to whip a horse then? Presumably they have been consulted and they have confirmed that 7 is fine? Or is this just a first step to getting it down to zero?
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:54 PM BST
even the idea that the rspca have specified a specific number of whips is just ludicrous imo.

surely if u feel the whip is the problem, then u fight fo the removal of the whip instead of ....'u know what, 7 is fine, make it 7'.

just silly imo and undermines their argument!
Report 11kv • October 17, 2011 7:54 PM BST
I have been wacked with one stung a little but consider the skin, muscle etc and a ton of horse thats what I would expect,
as you say have the RSPCA commented on this............?
Report ranader • October 17, 2011 7:55 PM BST
theres too many of them ILWAB.nobody can be expected to read them all
Report Brother Mouzone • October 17, 2011 7:55 PM BST
The RSPCA have zero authority, and they don't give a feck about horses FACT

they refuse to care for them so they either get taken in by animal sanctuaries (my old dear works at one) destroyed (the RSPCA's preferred method) or they end up on a plate.
Report LuckyLucan • October 17, 2011 7:56 PM BST
egner, forgive me for saying this, but you seem to have given less practical and intellectual thought to your request for a total ban than I would have expected from a man of your calibre.

I take it you are not used to riding horses?
Report sandysboy • October 17, 2011 7:57 PM BST
Because hes fishing
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 17, 2011 7:59 PM BST
if thats true brother mou then i take it the bha have taken it upon themselves to change the rule and if they arent changing it for the welfare of the horses(as they dont believe the whip is the problem) then why the fack have he specified a number allowed?

ffs!
Report LuckyLucan • October 17, 2011 7:59 PM BST
