The 4.30 Cork yesterday made a mockery of the new whip rule, Davey Russell & Ruby Walsh fought out a tremendous finnish in the race with Walsh winning by a nose on his mount De Valira beating odds on favorite Flight Leiutenent yet both Walsh & Russell both hit their horses around 12-15 times after the last fence with no punishent dished out to either jockey. i have read of no injury to either horse yet without the use of the whip i am certain the result would not be a victory for De Valira and the excitement of a neck and neck dual to the line which is what horse racing is all about.

so if both jocks had been limited  to 5 or 6 strikes after the last, would not also have resulted in a neck and neck finish?

I think you will find Davy hit First Lieutenent 6 times after the last fence and Ruby hit De Valira 6 times also but it's harder to see how many times Ruby used the whip from the replay but it was certainly nowhere near the amount of times you claim

You don't think it's possible to have the excitement of neck and neck finishes without horses being thrashed "12 - 15 times after the last fence" then! By my reckoning 12 - 15 after the last would equate to about one smack per second; must have been quite a spectacle.

You also claim that you are "certain" that without whips De Valira would not have won. How can you be certain and why would it matter anyway if FL had won instead of DV? What iyo would a different result have proved?

don't think the new whip rule applies in Ireland does it ?

ReimerpYsatnaf - as we are both betting men i would gamble i am far nearer to the correct number of times the 2 jockeys hit their horses 12-15 than what you are claiming in 6 times. £20 bet here if your willing to wager

'thrashed' Gerry - that's the sort of emotive language you specialise in.

bilbo - the OP talked in terms of the horses being hit 12 - 15 times AFTER the last. That, by anyone's reckoning, equates to about one smack per second. How would you define such rides?

bilbo has just e-mailed me. Says he thinks "butchered" might be a better word than "thrashed". Fine by me.
