Ascot, 15 October 2011

Richard Hughes, who was declared to ride POLLY’S MARK (IRE) in Race 1, LIBRANNO in Race 2, DICK TURPIN (IRE) in Race 4, and CASAMENTO (IRE) in Race 5, failed to arrive. The Stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (D)41.1 and fined him £280, this being his second offence within 12 months. Permission was given for Gerald Mosse, Kieren Fallon, C Soumillon and Mickael Barzalona to be substituted respectively.

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, FAME AND GLORY, ridden by Jamie Spencer and trained by Aidan O’Brien, compared with its previous run at The Curragh on 10 September, on good to soft ground over 1¾ miles, where the horse finished fourth of six, beaten 23 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that FAME AND GLORY had taken time to return to form after the Gold Cup and appreciated the even pace of this race. They ordered the horse to be routine tested.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jamie Spencer, the rider of the winner, FAME AND GLORY, from two furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, the Stewards accepted his explanation that he had used his whip down the shoulder in the forehand position as he was concerned that the horse was going to hit the running rail.

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference four furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that EXCELEBRATION (IRE), placed second, ridden by Jamie Spencer, had interfered with POET’S VOICE, placed sixth, ridden by Frankie Dettori. The Stewards found Spencer in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had manoeuvred to his right. They suspended him for four days as follows: Saturday 29 and Monday 31 October, and Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 November.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by C Soumillon, the rider of the winner, CIRRUS DES AIGLES (FR), inside the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2, in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. As the offence warranted a suspension at the upper level, the Stewards suspended Soumillon for 5 days as follows: Saturday 29 and Monday 31 October, and Tuesday 1, Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 November. Under Schedule (D)6 the rider shall not be entitled to a riding fee or a percentage of any prize money.
