Me neither. Horse racing is all about the horses, not the jockeys - always was and always will be.

i think fair play to the man for making a stance.. someone has to stand up and hopefully more will follow
Report John_Cherry • October 15, 2011 2:43 PM BST
I miss his 'won't someone think of the punters?!' stance.
Brought a lump to my throat did that.
Gawd bless ya Dickie

Report Gerry Gallbladder • October 15, 2011 2:52 PM BST
I'm sure Richard Hughes will be suitably overwhelmed with this show of support. He may even develop a similar lump in his throat to the one he caused JC with his "won't somebody think about the punters" line!

p.s. GANT007 You are deluded imo if you think that there will be any changes to the whip rules after the meeting on Monday. The BHA consists mainly of Tories and Tories never give in to those who strike or threaten to strike.
Report 18blue4ever78 • October 15, 2011 2:56 PM BST
not missing a great jockey, you must be thick then. Hughsey shows us his worth in the shergar cup every year one of the most talented flat jockeys in the world just doesn't get on the real top quality horses.
Report roggrain • October 15, 2011 2:56 PM BST
Yes Gerry,as I said on another thread, the BHA will not talk to the jockeys on Monday, they will talk AT them, because of their attitude that jockeys are in some way inferior to them.
Report wee eck • October 15, 2011 2:57 PM BST
Gerry they will have to change the penalties that is a certainty.
Report dod • October 15, 2011 2:58 PM BST
Gerry you would miss him if you backed a horse he normally rides and it got beat because its jockey did not know it well enough.
Report trap six • October 15, 2011 2:58 PM BST
at least with hughes making a stance something is happening, fair play to him for having the balls to do something, pity a few of the other top boys didnt hand there licence in and really stirr things up, the whalesavers really have fxxcked up animal sports in england, thank god i live in ireland.

Report 18blue4ever78 • October 15, 2011 3:01 PM BST
the whalesavers seem to forget these animals race to get fed, they still get the same amount of feed wether they win or finish last. No racing = no racehorses hmmm saving animals i think not
Report Rider • October 15, 2011 3:02 PM BST
trap six, why didnt he take a stance in the proper way beofre he got banned, no he has a tantrum and gives racing bad publicity
Report brigust1 • October 15, 2011 3:04 PM BST
And they have to change the 'final furlong' idea. Crazy idea. Simply crazy but what you expect from this team.

For me the only satisfactory outcome from Monday would be the resignation of those involved including Paul Roy and Jamie Stier. And, I think, Kevin Darley must go. How, as the jockey's representative, has he allowed this to reach this stage? Unless the BHA duped him, that is.

rider, you have a point, yes he spat like a child and probably would admit he handled it wrong, but who else was doing anything the others were all sitting back and excepting it......his reaction has caused a media interest,so the bha now have to address it.

everyone calls for consistency, then when they get it (and know the rules before hand) they then want common sense to be applied, prescott talked about this in his ruk interview and explained that the old rules were not fair to jockeys
Report Daryl Revok • October 15, 2011 3:17 PM BST
Hughes is a petulant joke, promoting an untenable argument that he's contradicted himself in the past. He's the best flat jock in the country, when he's pursuing personal glory, but I won't miss him.
Report A_T • October 15, 2011 3:20 PM BST
Did Hughes say the jockeys weren't consulted because Tony McCoy said they were.
Report roggrain • October 15, 2011 3:21 PM BST
They weren't consulted on the 5 hits in the last furlong, according to Hughes.
Report differentdrum • October 15, 2011 3:24 PM BST
The BHA don't have to change the rules, but everyone expects them to because they have no backbone. A strike would do the jockeys no good whatsoever - if they don't realise this they have no grasp of the real world.
Report Gerry Gallbladder • October 15, 2011 3:24 PM BST
flyingbolt

Heath was indeed a Tory but he wasn't a Tory like Thatcher was a Tory, or Cameron for that matter. I suspect that the BHA Board are very much Tories in the Thatcher mould.

The way I see it is if today's showcase meeting continues more or less without incident (ie no jockey suspensions) then the BHA will tough it out. Hughes needs racing more than it needs him - as much as a multi-millionaire needs anything that is.

Report 18blue4ever78 • October 15, 2011 3:37 PM BST
ha obviously he rides for the owners, thats probably down to the fact they pay the bills and punters don't how can you criticise him for that comment. Punters criticise him for every little mistake he makes when riding so obviously he will show some contempt
Report GANT007 • October 15, 2011 3:38 PM BST
Always dangerous to let someone who buys his way into something make the final call if he hasn't a clue in the first place.
Report 18blue4ever78 • October 15, 2011 3:39 PM BST
he may currently be as much of a jockey as me or you but how many of you have actually tried race riding ? so really comments that your making on how hard it is to adjust to theses are riddiculous

Report paddletoe • October 15, 2011 3:42 PM BST
Smacks of indulgent self promotion.

Would be be "retiring" if he was not banned but someone else was.

I would like to see him interviewed and be asked if he is going to stand by his words. Basically, be put into a corner where he cant come out of unless its with his tail between his legs.
Report flyingbolt • October 15, 2011 3:45 PM BST
Right or wrong,I admire him for taking a stance about something he feels strongly about.

Report paddletoe • October 15, 2011 3:50 PM BST
If he honours his statement and does not return to racing with the existing laws still in place i would admire him.

However, as i suspect he does return with his tail between his legs his statement that he has punters interests at heart will be totally insincere.

Its either hero or zero. No middle ground now that he has brought punters into his argument.

Gonna be a lot of very sad numpties about next week when they change the rules to something more sensible and RH comes back into the fold. Plus they reverse all of the existing penalties.

Oh yes. Looking forward to next week there will definitely be a lot of very sad numpties about.

They know who they are. Ha ha.
