Having reduced horse racing to its lowest common denominator and presided over some of the most catastrophic incidents that I can recall in all the years I've been following the sport surely if you had any semblance of decency you would stand down with immediate effect and pass the baton over to someone tasked to reverse the negative impact your tenure of office has witnessed.

Whilst you continue to serve out your knighthood apprenticeship you are failing to fulfil a role which you are obviously incapable of performing and you do not only yourself a disservice but the reputation of British Horse Racing per se.

Go before you bring racing to its knees. Go whilst you still have a modicum of grace and integrity.

Oh, I almost forgot. Take Paul Struthers with you. Head of Public Relations? The guy wouldn't get a job on the Warmington-on-Sea Monthly Gazette. He's a loser and despite the glitzy job title he's done more procrastinating on issues than my dog.

And my dog died years ago.

Don't tell me you're still there Paul Roy? Have you no scruples whatsoever or are you just hoping to receive some plaudits for today's racing before you empty your desk?

Well, fair enough, but just make sure you're gone by Monday then because the sooner we start repairing the damage you've inflicted on racing the sooner we can look forward to new beginnings.
Report Aviboyd • October 15, 2011 11:12 AM BST
Here, here!  No 'modicum of grace and integrity' remains which is exactly why they should go NOW.
Report LuckyLucan • October 15, 2011 8:02 PM BST
You may well ask why I am also calling for Paul Struthers to be sacked? The reason being that as Head Of Communications he alone is responsible for not being quick off the mark within minutes of the furore after the Grand National.

He should have prepared an immediate response to the anti-racing brigade. Instead he allowed the crescendo of criticism to get a head of steam before his dithering and withering response saw daylight.

As Head of Communications it is his duty to pre-empt attacks on racing. Some might call it being pro-active. Instead, he seems only capable of being reactive to events and often only after the fat lady has sung and all the customers have left the auditorium.

Does nobody within Government or the corridors of power have the wherewithal to call for resignations? As things stand the BHA is a law unto itself, feeble, rudderless and self-destructive. If only dearly-departed Robin Cook or Clement Freud were still alive then perhaps change would come about.

As things stand, I fear this charade of an organisation will rumble on oblivious to its own deficiencies.

Some might say it is an indestructible empire with Paul Roy as the incumbent life-long Emperor.

Others might suggest that the Emperor is not wearing any clothes and is delusional about his grandeur.

Eventually, a little, lone voice in the crowd will be heard to say, "Off with his head!"

So make the Board come up for re election by the people it serves, otherwise it just doesnt make sense.

There needs to be a Select Committee in Parliament prepared to come out with a damning indictment of the way that the BHA has been led during Paul Roy's stewardship.
Report LuckyLucan • October 15, 2011 8:33 PM BST
The only problem being that as all peoples of the World are suddenly realising, money and fat bankers hold all the aces.

Paul Roy fits into both categories.

Sadly, there seems to be an absence of racing media folk prepared and/or willing to rock the boat. A sad state of affairs all round.
Report LuckyLucan • October 16, 2011 9:20 AM BST
Paul and Paul, it doesn't have to be a detailed resignation letter. No need for formalities, suffice to just say, "I'm off, bye."

We'll get your final salary and P45 in the post to you and guarantee a decent reference (nod nod, wink wink).

As far as the press are concerned we'll just tell them that you've chosen to spend more time with your families, that you've done a great job and we'll miss you.

All the best Paul and Paul. Shame it didn't work out but then I just think you weren't up to the job. Never mind, you had a good run for your money, didn't you?

See you around.

It's just a shame that Parliament's Culture, Media and Sports Select Committee Members have their hands full with the hacking business otherwise they might have more time to delve into the BHA.

Unless of course someone can persuade them that a gentle hack on a horse can fall under the same scrutiny.
Report Fat Dodgy • October 16, 2011 9:37 AM BST
its the accountability thats the problem, there are no clubs to answer to, the owners are treated with disdain unless they are of the right colour of blood and they are hardly likely to rock any boats, as its always an option for any idiot offspring, the trainers the same and last and certainly least with absolutely no fecking say are us the poor coonts that fund the whole mess....

If even a quarter of punters got it together to speak with one voice that would have some clout.

I don't really care anymore.
my chaser is being sold and my flat horse is now in France.
meanwhile I have stopped betting on horses since the BHA's new improved whip rules put an end to British racing, and I am waiting on Arsenal today for a football treble.
(and if they don't win I might stop betting on football as well)

My inclination to have a bet on the horses seems to have evaporated as well this past week. I just can't seem to convince myself that any horse I pick is going to be ridden to it's optimum ability.

It's difficult enough having to avoid the bad rides, the 'pulls' and the dubious tactics so this latest episode is just another nail in the coffin to deter me from feeling enthusiastic about having a bet.
Report askari1 • October 16, 2011 9:53 AM BST
The BHA mindset is that the 'punters will pay for the small courses, owners, trainers and their staff'.

Why not think something truly revolutionary and put the sport's public and paying enthusiasts first?

Just look in the Sunday papers today. Nothing about the mighty Frankel all WHIP WHIP WHIP. Qipco should show some common sense and muscle. Ill advised and ill thought out and I'm afraid there is no way back without change of personnel. We are the laughing stock of the racing world. As for the RSPCA and animal welfare lot as I mentioned in an earlier thread last I will donate to them.

Lucan ..you make a lot of sense. Must be massively difficult when you are on a superstar of a horse whizzing past the furlong pole at (is it) 40 mph with other horses around and in front to know where the marker (pole) starts. I would also be more than interested to know what consultation has taken place. The jockeys mouth piece doesn't fill me with confidence at all and it all appears very confusing. Was it implemented as well as it could have been done or was it a big brother jobbie?
Report TheAnorak • October 16, 2011 10:05 AM BST
Look on the Sunday paper websites and you'll struggle to find any mention of Champions Day at all. On the Mail website, it appears on the bottom right of the fourth page, under reports about Andy Murray, Moto GP and a squabble between two cricketers.

Without the fluke of Frankel and the whip ban for the big winner, would this £3M have made any impact at all.

Has anything promoted or decided by Roy ever been successful since the day he took charge?
Report robert123 • October 16, 2011 10:10 AM BST
The section on the front page of the RP website inviting us to watch the videos says the following:
The first British Champions Day has been a joy - watch it again on video:
Dancing Rain:  Fillies and Mares
SO YOU THINK: Champion
Frankel: QEII
Edinburgh Knight:  Future Stars Race
Fame and Glory:  Long Distance
Deacon Blues:  Sprint

Er what....  So You Think won the Champion?  The plot sickens...
Report liberator of the oppressed • October 16, 2011 10:11 AM BST
I think it inevitable at some stage, unless there is acceptable change, there will be a legal challenge and the BHA will end up in Court. Some dosh lost yesterday wasn't it. That will be a laugh and racing will be dead. On a very serious point Qipco must be livid.
Report robert123 • October 16, 2011 10:12 AM BST
Or perhaps the RP is joining in all this stupidity and saying that it wasn't a joy to watch Cirrus des Aigles?  WATCH THE VIDEO:  Soumillon gave the horse a lovely ride.
Report robert123 • October 16, 2011 10:16 AM BST
I did hear it said that Soumillon will challenge the docking of his prize money.  I don't know whether the BHA will be able to hide behind being a private club, to which participants sign up and accept its rules, but in any legal context there is a concept of proportionality.  And I repeat, Soumillon gave the horse a lovely ride,  he may have used the whip 6 times (hard to tell on the RP video), but at no time was he beating the horse.  £50k when he was within the overall framework of the 'rules'....
Report Outpost • October 16, 2011 10:17 AM BST
and while the BHA are bringing racing into disrepute by punishing jockeys for trying to win, they are about to start a major case against several senior jockeys for NOT trying to win.

why don't they just tell these same jockeys that they are free to go and in future they will find it much easier NOT to try to win if they stick to the new whip rules, as stewards are only watching out for triers now and non triers can have a free run.

Paul Roy is to horse racing as Dame Shirley Porter of Westminster infamy was to affordable social housing.

The two have much in common:

Lack of insight, arrogance, conceitedness, bull-headedness and a complete lack of empathy with ordinary people. Not unlike Israel I might add.

Suspect there's a common denominator in there somewhere.
Report Dr Gonzo • October 16, 2011 12:14 PM BST
Their marketing and PR is simply woeful, they've allowed the last week to turn into a complete disaster; something which should have been frankly impossible with such a big day of racing coming.

I don't know if anyone saw the advert in the RP yesterday for SI, featuring Frankel. I thought that was a simple, yet brilliant, advert and piece of marketing. Far better than anything the BHA can manage.
Report LuckyLucan • October 16, 2011 12:21 PM BST
I wonder what they all say to Paul Struthers when they gather in the boardroom.

"Great job, Paul, couldn't have gone better if I'd done it myself."

"When it comes to PR, Paul, you are the man!"

"Ignore your critics Paul, hopefully one day they'll see what a splendid job we think you're doing."

"You've got those media people wrapped round your little finger, Paul."

Today is going to be the best day of my life. At this very minute both Pauls are emptying their desks and asking themselves, "Where did I go wrong? Why has my adoring public deserted me?"

The answer is easy guys. You failed miserably in acknowledging that no one person is bigger than racing itself. You got too big for your boots and thought you were indispensable. Fatal mistake. The punters and the pundits gave you too much rope and all you did was treat them as imbeciles. Shameful.

Good bye and good riddance.

Major conflict of interest, but seems that's par for the course in the echelons and corridors of power.
Total incompetents at the head of many large companies and institutions who haven't got the first ounce of common sense, total lack of integrity and no decency to quit when they are finally proven to be hopelessly incapable of doing the job they are paid fortunes for - move on to your next gravy train, Mr Roy.

pedrabob, you've touched on a subject that strikes a chord with me. I emigrated to Canada in 1966 and lived there most of my life.Back here at the moment and having been away so long I probably see things from a different perspective than many.
Time after time in the last few years I have experienced the management methods of various companies and institutions.
Managers who aren't fully conversant with all aspects of the business they run, and refusing to listen to the employees
who are doing the work day in day out and have ideas to improve things
Classic example, the head man of B.P. (forget his name).regarding the Florida oil spill disaster. When he went before the American Congressmen to answer questions he kept saying he couldn't answer technical questions as he is a Geologist not an Engineer. The Yanks were astounded! They found it beyond belief that anyone could occupy such a position who didn't know every nut and bolt of the operation.
ONE company I worked for here did ask it's employees to make suggestions-rewarding everyone when suggestions were taken up.  It was German owned.
