BBC 1-00 o'clock News - just had a Woman Sports reporter (Well, after all, the Head of BBC Sport is a WOMAN, too) reporting on the 'Jockeys Strike'.

In explaining the issue, she said...

" Jockeys are only allowed to strike the horse 7 times in a race - BUT -

They HAVE to hit the horse 5 times in the final furlong.

There we go - 'a little  knowledge is a dangerous thing' - and now the Public have a[b] FURTHER WRONG impression.[/b[

Don't berate the BBC reporter, some senior jockeys do not appear to know what the rules are.

Still spouting the same tripe Gerry - p.s. thought I'd stalk you for a change.

And for that you can only thank Richard Hughes & Co and if they strike the reporting will only worse. Yes, there are many people out there at the moment not that bothered by horse racing but when it starts making news headlines?

It's not tripe - ask Richard Hughes!

Have you ever ridden a horse at full racing pace trying to find a path through a field of other half ton horses and counting at the same time.? You really are showing yourself up Gerry.
Report Gerry Gallbladder • October 14, 2011 1:58 PM BST
Are you saying the jockeys who've ridden in the last week and who've NOT been banned are geniuses bilbo?
Report duncan idaho • October 14, 2011 2:03 PM BST
Whenever you see a report on the main news on racing or something else you have some specialist knowledge of, it's usually such cringeworthy, superficial stuff that it completely undermines your faith in the rest of the news!

You two really are getting desperate now - with your incessant  BAN THE WHIP campaign.

Reduced to snide sarcastic comments - on a serious issue of mis-reporting.
Report differentdrum • October 14, 2011 2:17 PM BST
If you are arguing against the idea of hitting a horse with a whip  the ability to ride in a race has got nothing to do with it. If you are suggesting that should be a qualification for posting you may as well close all forums down.
Report Gerry Gallbladder • October 14, 2011 2:18 PM BST
onlooker - I guess in the interests of balance you'll be issuing similar condemnation of the pro-whip brigade? Be sure to get the facts right too - I'll be on your case if you don't.
Report onlooker • October 14, 2011 2:39 PM BST
Gerry - I have already countered some posters as such - who have ruined reasoned threads  by spouting vitriol.

To put my stance on record ...

I AM, actually,  in FAVOUR of a Whip use restriction - especially on the Flat - as there is more of a chance of  us getting back to the days  of jockeys riding a SENSIBLE race to 'the distance' - and then making , an old-fashioned, last furlong challenge.

Instead of the current, or rather recent, scenario of the cowboys starting to ride a full finish from 3 furlongs out - and even before the final bend on some courses - resulting in, admittedly, overuse of the whip, and 'last man left standing' type race finishes.

HOWEVER - I am equally AGAINST a TOTAL ban of the whip - which is yours, and Feck's, chosen campaign.

That can only reduce racing to an ineffectual spectacle - and an open door Cheat's Charter for a plethora of even more, UNABLE TO POLICE, non-triers - some of which you may have backed, in all good faith.
Report duffy • October 14, 2011 2:47 PM BST
i'm starting to think that 5 in the final furlong isn't too bad...take that last race at redcar...took about 15 secs to run the last furlong....bearing in mind you are supposed to give the horse time to respond....3 secs per strike??

I haven't seen any of your put-downs for the pro-whip lobby.

Your description of a "sensible race" could easily be applied to the way in which most races unfold in France (and many in Ireland), races which most observers seem to use the word 'farce' to describe.

As for "riding a full finish from 3 furlongs out" (something McCoy, and to a lesser degree Fallon, do with great success) if jockeys were prevented from using a whip altogether, then they could continue to do this, thereby enabling them to play to their own strengths and perhaps more importantly, play to the strengths of the horse they happen to be riding.

Here's one for you, Gerry ...

If you want to overload the BHA...
LuckyLucan     10 Oct 11 12:34

...about the whip ban, I suggest you count every stroke administered by every jockey on every horse throughout today's races and for those exceeding the limit submit a formal complaint to the Disciplinary Department. That should keep them busy.

onlooker     10 Oct 11 12:38

Calm down.

Surely you noticed how more sensibly the Flat jockeys were riding on Saturday, especially at York.
Report Gerry Gallbladder • October 14, 2011 3:45 PM BST
So someone from the pro-whip lobby gets told to "calm down" whereas I (and feck) get told I'm "desperate" and making "snide, sarcastic" comments!

The best of it is onlooker, if you take a careful read through the mountain of 'whip' related threads, you'll see that that the vast majority of 'antis' have made reasoned arguments for why the whip should be banned; it's mainly those within the 'pro' lobby who lose the plot.

I would have put that the other way around

There are only three arguments being put forward for the continuation of the whip and all are to put it nicely, dubious to say the least.

Without the whip we would get non-triers, something which of course never happens now.

Some people enjoy seeing horses being hit and could not cope without seeing that spectacle.

My 'bilbobaggins loon' comment relates to this post....

bilbobaggins 14 Oct 11 12:04
parispike - the whip does not hurt the horse - you have obviously never seen a whip up close or you would retract that immediately. Half ton animals are not humans. It's not like Mo Farah putting in a superhuman effort on the last lap to try and win a gold medal. They need coercion for the last few seconds of a race to get the utmost out of the animal before they go back to their 5 star lifestyles. If a horse doesn't want to do something it won't do it , whip or no whip.

When I pointed out to bilbo that he'd made a contradictory statement he became pretty defensive and suggested that I didn't understand his point! I understand perfectly well - he's a feckin' loon.

having kept quite on this issue for a long time...i've decided to have a little say on the matter..anyone who's ever sat on a racehorse knows they have a mind of their own...90% of them are fine and if they've been well reared and handled there is normally no problem ...just like the human race ..there is a few rouges among them and no matter how kindly you treat them they wont do whats required... certain things need explaining here ...some horses going onto the gallops often refuse and have to have a little smack just to send them on their way down the gallop...others pull their way and gallop as fast as their legs carry them with no thoughtfor themselves or their riders , often heading dangerously onto roads when fresh ..a jockeys nightmare is a really fresh horse ...sometimes the only way you have of controlling them is to use the whip for corrective purposes ...take for instance a horse who tries to run out at a fence.. chepstow recently was a case in point ..were a horse decided to run out and nearly got the jockey badly injured breaking the wing to pieces ...no one likes to see horses beaten to a pulp ..but people who say there is no need for the whip are talking nonsense imo...i think i'll stop there before i go into a frenzy about horses that simply wont race unless they are giving a few reminders ...i just hope all the do gooders remember when stables start to close down and people are made redundant ..that in the end horses are bred to race , and the whips of today are nothing compered to yesteryear....

Yet you don't appear to have made any comments let alone input an alternative view on any of the recent 'whip' threads. You're well named imo.

Dont bother Workrider I've tried to give the rider perspective but its lost in moaning about trier and non-trier or better still cruelty. You honestly will get no change of view unless you put these people on one of your 10% (I think you are being generous) who wont play ball or are simply scared of everything.  Keyboard jockeys are the best horsemen.
