Sir Henry Cecil believes that his superstar Frankel still has improvement to come ahead of Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes Sponsored by Qipco.
The son of Galielo is undoubtedly the star attraction on the inaugural Champions Day at Ascot and is also Cecil's main weapon as he tries to catch Richard Hannon and win an 11th trainer's title.
Having begun his Classic season way back in April at Newbury, Frankel has been on the go for a while but those closest to him are adamant he has matured mentally and physically as the campaign has gone on.
While Frankel has carried all before him this season, Cecil is loathe to laud him as the best he has ever trained - yet.
"He is a very happy horse with a lot of energy - he never seems to get tired. Although he is very active, he is not that hard a horse to get fit. You can give him an easy time and he comes back pretty quick," said Cecil.
"I don't particularly mind that it is on the straight course rather than the round at Ascot. I would not swap him, but no horse is a certainty.
"Frankel is potentially a very good horse - I think the best is still to come. If he stays right and everything goes to plan, I would like to think you will see a better horse as time goes on.
"I am not going to compare the best horses I have had over the years - they have been good friends to me.
"They have won at different distances, whether they be Ardross, Oh So Sharp or whoever they might be. They have been very good in their generations and distances. It would be very unfair to say this is the best I have ever had.
"I think this horse, as time goes on, will show you what he is and you may not even have to ask me the question.
"It is a lovely position to be in to have a horse of that capability. I have enjoyed him. I found early on that he was slightly complicated. I am a simple person and like simple things.
"There is always a bit of pressure with a horse of his calibre. You are nervous about this, that and the other. I am very happy to have him and he is a challenge. I do the best I can with him."
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, will leave it to Frankel to show what he is made of - and is not ruling out a potential trip to the Breeders' Cup next month.
"I don't think there is much to be said that hasn't already been said really. The horse will do the talking," said Grimthorpe.
"The horse is in great shape and these days are to be enjoyed. It's going to a super day's racing."
Of a potential trans-Atlantic raid, Grimthorpe added: "Nothing has been decided and nothing will get decided until after the race on Saturday."
French raider
Frankel has seen off his own generation and sex in England, but Robert Collet's Immortal Verse, who lays a strong claim to being the best three-year-old filly in Europe, presents a new problem.
Connections of the Coronation Stakes winner are well aware of the task she faces, and are excited by the challenge.
The daughter of Pivotal will be having her first start since August 15, after an over-reach forced her to miss the Prix du Moulin.
Brendan Hayes, manager of owner Richard Strauss' Kilfrush Stud in Ireland, said: "Everything appears to be going well.
"She definitely looks like the champion three-year-old filly, but time will tell. It's going to be very tough on Saturday, but very exciting.
"We're optimistic and hope the filly will be ready to do her best.
"It's a pity she got delayed when she did as it definitely slowed her down in her preparation, we could have got along without that just fine.
"She goes there, fresh though.
"The ground shouldn't bother her, but we know she's efficient on easier ground.
"She's from the family of Last Tycoon and he needed it like the road. I know she's out of a Sadler's Wells mare and by Pivotal, both of whom loved soft ground, but the family has gone on fast ground.
"They have watered and they'll want it safe."
The Italian connection
In a normal year Marco Botti's Excelebration would be a clear-cut leading three-year-old miler, having chased Frankel's shadow in the Greenham and the St James's Palace Stakes while also winning the German Guineas, the Hungerford Stakes and the Prix du Moulin.
However, this is not a normal year.
Botti said: "Not many horses can do what Frankel did - making all the running in the Guineas was something else, and then his acceleration was very impressive.
"He has everything you need to be a superstar - there's no weakness.
"We know it will be tough, but we can't go there thinking he's going to be second. We go there with a horse in good shape, and of course we're hoping we'll beat him.
"I can't see any weaknesses in Frankel and it will be no disgrace to finish second to him again. It is still nice to have the chance to take on the best horse in the world. For a young trainer, it is very important to have a good horse that can be part of a big meeting.
"He is very correct and a tough and courageous horse - he always gives his best. He has a great attitude and he is so switched off in his work. Also on the day of the race, he is relaxed - he just walks around the paddock so that is good.
"When he won the German Guineas in Cologne, the ground went a bit soft and it was heavy last time out which was too soft. Jamie Spencer came back and said he got away with it but hopefully we won't find that ground at Ascot.
"Frankel will have a pacemaker and so there should be a good, even pace which should suit everyone. The straight course should also help Excelebration and I am happy with the weather forecast as he wants good ground.
"He did not cost a lot at the sales - we were lucky to get him. He is a lovely horse and now we need a bit of luck on Saturday. It is exciting and I am really looking forward to the race."
Frankie Dettori rides last year's winner Poet's Voice but admits he has not been in the same form this season and is playing for a place.
Dettori said: "Poet's Voice is one of a few just hoping to get near Frankel, even though he won it last year. If he was second it would be great as Frankel is unbeatable."
Hannon team
Richard Hannon never shirks a challenge and runs both Dick Turpin and Dubawi Gold.
Richard Hughes had chosen to ride Dick Turpin but having relinquished his licence in protest over the new whip rules, Christophe Soumillon, who won a Group One in Italy on him last time out, maintains the partnership.
Johnny Murtagh rides Dubawi Gold, who will be kept on the go after this with a trip in Hong Kong in the pipeline.
"Obviously, it is going to be tough and we have three very good horses in front of us in the betting, but 25-1 is an insult to Dick Turpin, who has proved a star for us over the last three seasons," Hannon told his website, www.richardhannonracing.tv.
"He showed plenty of guts to get up to win his second Group One in Italy last time, and he has never moved better than he has done recently.
"Hughesie was delighted with him on Tuesday morning and he looks great, so, while I am not saying that we will beat Frankel, he is well capable of getting a slice of the action."
He added: "Dubawi Gold will be going for the big mile race in Hong Kong in December, so this is a stepping-stone.
"Neither he nor Dick Turpin want the ground too fast, but Hughesie is adamant that it rode slow at the last meeting, and he should be fine. He has been placed in two Guineas and is a good horse."

Don't see how anyone could call 1 way or the other, if you're talking 7f.
Black caviar's the best i've ever seen in Australia and Frankel's the best you guys have seen, most say.

get over it, we have a great horse, you have a great horse.. but to answer your stupid question (and it is stupid), obviously she is the best we have, unbeaten from 14 starts and wins in a canter most times then not
is Frankel the best you got? how about that jockey who nearly got your great one beat at Ascot, is he the best you got?

this has been discussed so much there's nothing more that anyone can say
the only distance they'll ever meet would be 6-7f
the only time they could meet would be at ascot next year in one of the sprint races, would Frankel be primed to run in a sprint race when he is probably better suited to race in a mile race or something else?
it won't happen, if both horses were european horses this would not even be talked about half as much as it is, it's purely "us against them", that's all
and the biggest point in any of this is that is in neither horse's best interest to compete against one and other for the benefit of the price tag in the breeding barn

They are supposedly the best horses in the world, possibly the best of alltime in each continent. The reason there are so many threads is BECAUSE they'll never actually meet. All we can do is talk about it. Still don't know what the ability of Tom Queally has to do with it.
