A - as a punter you knew where you stood (well most of the times that is)

Whips are over used. The rule in theory is fine, but needs amending to allow common sense application. |

The reasons being... 1. We knew where we stood with the way it was 2. If i was a jockey, I would want some sort of control of a 2year old colt that is boisterous and needs calming down, otherwise u might as well be up s hit creek in a canoe without a paddle!! |

Essentially, revert to previous rules but harsher penalties for those found in breach of excessive use of the whip. |

It is my view that no jockey should ever be suspended. |

I've now stopped backing horses and won't bother looking again for atleast 3 or 4 weeks until this mess is sorted or things settle down. |

The old rules retained and the stewards educated in what an 'abuse' ride looks like so that they can punish offenders instantly and accordingly. No-one wants to see horses abused but jockeys must be allowed to use all of their armoury to reach the best possible position. Five strikes by Amy Ryan cannot possibly compare to 5 strikes by Paddy Brennan. Crazy. |

I agree with brigust1.

E The the new rules need a serious re think. It all seems reaaly rushed to me.
The number of times the jockey can use a whip needs to be reduced, but not 5 in the last furlong, some one has said on here already 9 hits and 7 in the last furlong. Also heavier punishments if these are broken If these rules stay in the place for the upcoming NH season is going to be a joke, its harder enough trying to find a winner and with these new rules the sport becomes alot less friendly. |

agree with brigust1, as well as harsher punishment (but not financial, ie not taking away earnings from race where infractions occured) for those who abuse, and maybe more dialogue between all parties (owner/trainer/jockey) when a incident occurs with those that dole out the punishments, if there isnt already. There needs to be some flexibility in the rules, it cant be perfect but there does need to be some understanding and leeway, as brigust1 said Five strikes by Amy Ryan cannot possibly compare to 5 strikes by Paddy Brennan. Crazy. |

I was going to say A but there were so many whip bans they obviously weren't working.
so E The reason they got so many bans was because the rules for excessive use were interpreted differently by different stewards and they had a ridiculous totting up procedure which definitely needed abolishing. Jockeys need to be able to ride a finish and 5 strikes in the final furlong is too few . Also the very act of counting makes for finishes by numbers - boring, predictable and quite simply pathetic. I think everybody knows what is excessive force (Frankie on Rewilding was too much and he rightly got banned). They DO NOT need to be told an arbitrary set of numbers you can hit. so after all that A with the totting up procedures removed. |
