Willie Carson would have thrived with the new rules imo. I know that he could dish it out with the best (worst?) of them; but for rhythmic encouragement / persuasion (non-whip), Carson was a master. Maybe instead of whinging today's jockeys should pull out a few videos of Carson in his pomp - it might even give them an edge.

He uses the whip more than he should. But not any more ?

L Piggott - everyone points to Roberto and The Minstrel but he was the best bridle jockey I have ever been. Made so many horses look special.

Agree with differentdrum about Lester Piggott but if he was riding now he would only last a day.
There is no jockey from the past that would not be banned under these new crazy rules. |

Pat Day -
only whip he ever heard of was a walnut whip. |

Cash Asmussen always used to try and ride without recourse to the whip -
But, only to make himself look clever.... Being on the best horses helped. Dreadful Daryll McHargue - Luca must still be having nightmares about him - would not have got any more out of a horse, if he had had a pneumatic drill to help him. |
